Why did Democrats vote against Tim Scott's Police Reform Bill this past summer?

"We saw how seriously congressional Democrats were taking police reform when Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.), the second-ranking Democratic leader, dismissed legislation introduced by Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) as a “token, half-hearted approach.” For Durbin to question the seriousness and sincerity of Scott — a black man who has personally experienced police discrimination — was disgraceful. Scott said of Durbin’s comment, “to call this a token process hurts my soul.” (Durbin later apologized to Scott.)"

What Democrats should be apologizing for was their shameful vote on the Senate floor Wednesday to kill Scott’s legislation — and with it any chance of passing police reform this year.

Don't black lives matter?

If Trump thinks US healthcare should exist, why does he oppose improvements Democrats have proposed to Obamacare? Don't lives matter?

The old, "if you support an issue, you should be for any proposals for the issue" argument is ****ing idiotic.

If Tim Scott actually knew anything about police discrimination he wouldn't be a member of the Republican Party. This bill accomplishes nothing. Republicans are just hoping that they can use their one token black man(who was appointed to the Senate and never had to face a Republican Primary) to make themselves seem like they care without actually doing something at all.

Are you threatened by conservative men of color?

Trump’s approval with black voters BTW went up 60% during the RNC, per Morning Consult.

Black Americans will be fleeing the Democratic Party more and more, several recent converts spoke at the RNC, including Vernon Jones.

If Democrats truly cared about black Americans and police reform, they wouldn’t have tabled that Bill.

If Scott’s Bill has passed in July, perhaps the incident in Kenosha wouldn’t have happened.

But it was more important to make sure Republicans didn’t get credit for police reform.

What is this connection you are making between police brutality and Republicans?

How many incidents of police discrimination have we had in Republican districts? Vs. Democratic districts?

Republican mayors ensure their police officers aren’t racist. Apparently, Democratic mayors don’t care.

If someone truly supports an issue, any advancement or improvement would probably be welcome regardless of who proposed it. Currently, though, there are very few (if any) politicians on either side that are interested more in addressing issue than being perceived as the winner or being on the winning side.

I look at your avatar...and I look at your post...and all I can do is say, "Wow!! Look at the racist hypocrisy!!"

You should be ashamed of yourself.

If the bill is garbage, then it's worse than nothing at all.

He's correct, but it's not because he's black himself. They wouldn't pass any bill from anyone (even a Democrat) because it couldn't get past the Senate without becoming a victory for Trump, so it's no good before the election.

Neither side is immune to these triangulations. Remember when the GOP held up a SCOTUS seat vote for a year, because **** Obama?

If you are opposed to crime, why do you not support efforts to ban guns?

What is this connection you are making between police brutality and Republicans?
The republican party is blatantly racist and doesn't give two ****s about police brutality as long as it only impacts minorities.

How many incidents of police discrimination have we had in Republican districts? Vs. Democratic districts?
Black people don't live in Republican districts. There's nobody for the police to discriminate against.

Republican mayors ensure their police officers aren’t racist. Apparently, Democratic mayors don’t care.

Umm... no, Republican mayors don't get elected in cities with a heavily African American population.

The reason of course is that Scott's bill was window dressing. It wants to "discourage" choke holds rather than ban them. It has meaningless crap about getting "better reporting" of no-knock warrants (like the one that resulted in the horrific murder of Breonna Taylor. He refused to consider any changes to the "qualified immunity" that police use to avoid facing criminal charges for egregious violent behavior. He didn't even bother to get a single Dem co-sponsor. In short, it was a political stunt.

They didnt just vote against a piece of legislation. They voted against further discussion of legislation, even though the proponent promised to support democrat amendments to make it a document everyone could agree too. They don't WANT progress and its for purely political gains. And the idiot leftists that support their vote cant even articulate a thought on WHY it was voted against other than mumble idiotic leftist bull**** that literally has nothing to do with the proposed legislation or why it wasnt a good bill.

But then lets be honest. The only legislation the rat party, lifted up by their idiot leftist supporters, seem to pass shows that their 'support' of black Americans involves renaming post offices and streets after civil rights leaders.

Your gonna need a source for that phat one.

Always hilarious when a trumper calls for "honesty." But putting that comedy aside there are so many false or misleading statements above. First, however the Dems voted they couldn't stop the further debate so wouldn't have prevent Scott from getting those amendments passed even without Dem support. And what does "promise" mean. Either he added them and put it up for another vote or didn't. Obviously, the latter. So, he either chose not to or realized that then he would lose R votes. There was no "progress" in this bill. It was just a lot of wall papering and platitude spewing.

Oh, boy...with Reuben that is always an occasion for some hilarity in the slapstick genre.

What’s hilarious lol is your inability to quote me directly and debate like a man.

Show some self confidence, and debate the subject matter.

If Dems hadn’t blocked Scott’s Bill, Blake might be alive today.

He didn't include enough loony left wishes, and they can't give GOP any credit. Pure political bull****.

How many of these police discrimination incidents have happened with police departments under the supervision of Republican mayors?

Kenosha, Democratic mayor.
Minneapolis, Democratic mayor.
Atlanta, Democratic mayor.
Baltimore, Democratic mayor.

There was an incident in Tulsa during the Obama Administration, before Trump took office.

You’ve got a lot of false stereotypes in there.

Black people don’t live in Republican districts? What?

The Republican Party is racist? Apparently, you didn’t listen to a word Herschel Walker, Tim Scott, Vernon Jones, Ben Carson, and others at the RNC said to you.

Racist Joe has made so many derogatory comments about black Americans it’s ridiculous. Obama was the first clean and articulate black American Joe had met? He didn’t want his kids growing up in a racial jungle? Poor kids are just as bright and talented as white kids?

You are fun to punk, I'll give that to you. First of all, Blake is alive "only" crippled from the waist down. Nothing in Scott's bill would have stopped that cop from pumping seven rounds into Blake's back and nothing would have penalized him afterward. Keep up the "good work" (for us) Reuben.

What's your point....you don't actually think mayors control their police departments, do you? You know those unions you people hate....well, the cops have a union's union. Mayor's can't even look cross-eyed at the cops without them threatening or doing some kind of work action. If you want to make it illegal for cops to form unions I'm all in with you.

Get used to it, you'll soon be the minority.

Hey, Reub. You "forgot" to put "This is a Total Bull**** Thread" as one of your poll choices. That means you aren't getting an accurate assessment.

For the academically challenged, that is an anecdote, not a source.
