For one thing, without compulsory military service Donald Trump might never have been born in America. His grandfather fled Bavaria to avoid military service and was refused when he tried to return so Trumps father was born in the Bronx.There should not be any forced military service.

I also think there are prices too high to pay to save the United States. Conscription is one of them. Conscription is slavery, and I don't think that any people or nation has a right to save itself at the price of slavery for anyone, no matter what name it is called. We have had the draft for twenty years now; I think this is shameful. If a country can't save itself through the volunteer service of its own free people, then I say: Let the damned thing go down the drain!

It seems like the simplest solution is to abolish the draft. That would be equal for men and women.Because we failed to pass the ERA, so legislatures, including Congress get to pick and choose when sex/gender identification should be a discriminating factor and when sex/gender identification should not be a discriminating factor without SCOTUS demanding a strict scrutiny standard or any legal burden be met to justify discrimination. The problem with the Military Selective Service Act discriminatory treatment is that even assuming that women should not be required do perform equal duties in fighting zones, the act is not narrowly constructed to prohibit those assignments. It obliged young men to put their names on a list to potentially put their personal lives on hold for years of service, and obliges young women to do absolutely nothing. Young women and young men can both put their lives on hold for their country even if they do different things in different places, and should be equally compelled or not compelled to put in the time and sacrifice.
There is no earthy reason for that kind of disparate treatment based on sex, or gender.

I do care that we do not treat young men as though they have a duty to perform and serve their country, but not young women.
Congress should completely overhaul the act, decide if they are even saving any valuable time by acquiring any data ahead of an actual draft bill. I suspect with modern technology the same lists can be generated rather quickly without the snail mail card I sent on my 18th birthday.
