If you know of any.....throw a pic up with a brief description, if it different from what has been shown. Otherwise if it one that has already been thrown up in here. No need for the description just throw up the Cool or Awesome Pic.

Barn Owl

Like the osprey, the barn owl (Tyto alba) is found on all continents except Antarctica. It prefers to live near grassy fields and meadows, where it hunts mice, bats and even skunks. Its white face is framed by a heart-shaped facial disk, and its tawny body is flecked with small black-and-white spots. The barn owl doesn't make the expected "hoot" sound, instead producing a high-pitched scream that sounds like a screeching cat.

Harry Potter Owl.....

Snowy owls, like Harry Potter's Hedwig, have wingspans of about 5 feet and they are known to swallow such as lemmings, whole.

How cool is that.

What else makes a sound like an owl at night?
We hear something (on the roof?) around midnight sometimes.
Doves don't usually chat at night, do they?

great grey owl.jpg

The Great Grey Owl also known as the Phantom of the North has a wingspan of 60 inches, and is the worlds largest owl.

They inhabit the Boreal forest of North America and Eurasia.

Great gray owl.....

The great gray owl's head never turns away from the scurrying rodent under the snow, according to photographer Ann Cook.

Prey captured.....At this stage, the prey is firmly gripped in the powerful talons of this great gray owl.

I was buzzed by one of those in a northern forest at dusk. Scared the crap out of me on it's first pass. The second pass was just amazing. It was a thing to behold. I'll never forget it. It just swooped off into the darkness. Gone as quietly as it appeared. Amazing birds.

Hiya Falcata. Actually the Blakistons Fish Owl is the largest in the World. ;)

The world's largest owl requires equally huge trees, a finding that reveals that this salmon-devouring predator could be a key sign of the health of some of the last great forests of Russia's Far East, researchers say.

Blakiston's fish owl (Bubo blakistoni) is one of the rarest owls in the world, an endangered bird restricted to Russia, China, Japan and possibly North Korea. This owl is also the largest on Earth.

"These birds stand two-and-a-half feet tall [75 centimeters], have 6-foot wingspans [2 meters] and can weigh more than 10 pounds [4.6 kilograms]," lead author Jonathan Slaght, a wildlife biologist at the Wildlife Conservation Society, told LiveScience. [See Photos of Giant Salmon-Eating Owls]

"Blakiston's fish owl is a clear indicator of the health of the forests, rivers and salmon populations," Slaght said.

In recent decades, logging and other human activities have expanded into and endangered this owl's habitat. The new findings suggest conserving and managing old-growth forests is essential for sustaining this species, as well as eight salmon and trout species that spawn in the rivers there, some of the 12 other owl species found in Primorye, and mammals such as the endangered Siberian tiger, Asiatic black bear and wild boar.....snip~

When I first began teaching I'd take the kids on field trips where we'd search for owl pellets (not what you might think). We could put a whole mouse skeleton back together, plus other animals, as a class project. I still run across some of the kids who are now adults with their own families, who remember the owls with fondness.

My girlfriend at the time (we lived on the bluff overlooking the American River) could call the barn owls. She'd stand out on the bluff and do her call and they'd fly up and circle her head. Most wonderful thing!

That's heavily debated. Though many biologist agree that the Blakiston's Fish Owl is slightly smaller than the Great Grey Owl, many still also claim the the Blakison's Fish Owl is larger. If you scroll down a bit on this page, you'll see the answer says much of the same.

Yeah.....I was going by what those biologists said from LiveScience. They didn't have much else up on it. :)

Here is another. ;)

Boreal owl.....

Boreal owls, like this one shown in Manitoba, Canada, often sit on perches, listening for any scurrying rodents below. Then they dive down to capture a meaty meal.

Eurasian Eagle Owl.

The Eagle Owl is a very large and powerful bird, smaller than the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) but larger than the Snowy Owl. It is sometimes referred to as the world's largest owl, although Blakiston's Fish Owl (B. blakistoni) is slightly heavier on average and the Great Grey Owl (Strix nebulosa) is slightly longer on average.

The great size, bulky, barrel-shaped build, ear tufts and orange eyes make this a distinctive species. The ear tufts of males are more upright than those of females. The plumage coloration, across 13 accepted subspecies, however can be somewhat variable. The upperparts may brown-black to tawny-buff to pale creamy gray, typically showing as dense freckling on the forehead and crown, stripes on the nape, sides and back of the neck, and dark splotches on the pale ground colour of the back, mantle and scapulars. A narrow buff band, freckled with brown or buff, often runs up from the base of the bill, above the inner part of the eye and along the inner edge of the black-brown ear tufts. The rump and upper tail-coverts are delicately patterned with dark vermiculations and fine wavy barring. The facial disc is tawny-buff, speckled with black-brown, so densely on the outer edge of the disc as to form a "frame" around the face. The chin and throat are white continuing down the center of the upper breast. The whole of the underparts except for chin, throat and centre of upper breast is covered with fine dark wavy barring, on a tawny-buff ground colour. Legs and feet (which are feathered almost to the talons) are likewise marked on a buff ground colour but more faintly. The tail is tawny-buff, mottled dark grey-brown with about six black-brown bars. The bill and feet are black, the iris is orange (yellow in some subspecies
