WHO Saturday night in Detroit!!!!!

Just got a call from my brother giving me 2 free tickets to see the WHO this Saturday night at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Its the opening night of their 50th Anniversary US tour.

He won them on some radio show contest, then the concert was postponed last year - and now its been rescheduled. I

Oh, man, I'm jealous! Of all the truly classic rock bands still out there, the best is The Who.

But if you ever get a chance to see Paul McCartney in concert, it's worth every penny. We saw him here in Seattle a few years back, and...well, every other concert we ever saw (including Elton John with Billy Joel) pales in comparison. There's nothing like singing Hey Jude along with Paul and fifty thousand of his closest friends....
 
You need to go into show business. You know how to leave us wanting more...
 
Congrts! Same way we got to see Zeppelin...6 months after Plant's son died. The original purchaser of the tickets couldn't go.

nah - but I am feeling giddy.

The thing is its a real mess getting out of that area and then a lot worse getting out of the parking garages so I was thinking about leaving before the final encore because giving up ten minutes can get you an hour in return. Then I check set lists and see that in Wembley two weeks ago for their warm up show - my favorite WHO song is the last encore. One well - its home at midnight I guess and it will be a great evening even with the parking exit mess.

Like the WHO always said ' "you can't always get what you...." oh wait - wrong band.

Thanks. My plan is to get down there by 5 - get a good parking spot near the garage exit - find a place downtown for dinner and make it a day.
 
When I read the title I thought this was about the World Health Organization coming to Detroit. Makes Haymarket's post a hoot. :mrgreen:
 
I saw the Who open for Depeche Mode once upon a time. It was a an interesting and diverse concert experience considering the bands
 
Okay - last night at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit the WHO kicked off their 2016 tour in America. We had a terrific time and enjoyed the show quite a bit. It looked to be sold out which means a crowd near 18K or so more or less.

They played for two hours with pretty much a greatest hits set list. The average age in the crowd must have been 55 or so.

When you see any super act after forty or fifty years in the business you have to adopt a mindset that this is NOT what you saw in the glory days. Time takes it toll and it certainly did here. Townshend certainly does not do the amazing leg kick and scissor leaps anymore and the vocal range of Roger Daltry is noticeably diminished. He even seems to struggle getting some words out in the final number FOOLED AGAIN and even missed some words at least three times when his voice seemed to fail a bit. And the few times he attempted the twirling mic like he used to - well - lets just say he is out of practice.

But it was a great show just the same with everybody most likely getting their favorites and lots of banter from Pete about their history in Detroit over the decades and why the city is important to him and the group. They had some great 60's style light effect with film screen behind them that added to the show since everybody on stage is pretty stationary these days.

The last 30 minutes is the TOMMY numbers and they close with FOOLED AGAIN and do not do any encore - which is something I am glad and wished more bands would adopt that instead of the phony "oh gee they are coming back" after leaving their top three hits yet to be played.

They did not play one of my favorites - REAL GOOD LOOKIN BOY - but then this was about thirty years ago and more so that was to be expected.

All in all a really fun night and I am glad I could see them - probably for the last time.

The Who opened for Depeche Mode? Sort of like Jimi Hendrix opening for the Monkees.
 
I saw them twice in 1970. A classic band.
