I believe that the side that caves in will be the loser and the side that doesn't cave will be the winner. If democrats cave in to delaying or de-funding Obama-care then they lose voters.If they remain firm and get a clean C.R. passed then they win. If republicans cave into passing a clean C.R. then they lose voters. If republicans remain firm and succeed in either defunding or delaying Obama-care then they win. Basically the voting base in each of the major parties will be pissed off if their side bitches out and caves in. While the voting bases in the parties will be pleased if their side does not bitch out and refuses to cave in.

In terms of public opinion, the Republicans will likely lose in either scenario. While the Healthcare law is unpopular at this stage, the tactics being used in an attempt to upend it are simply unacceptable in the view of most.

This budget ransom demand is a sure vote loser for Republicans. No matter what the resolution is. Nobody likes being held hostage, especially the USA electorate.

^ Totally false. The "ransom demand" is by the Democrats in the Senate.

I think Democrats win either way. If the Teabaggers continue to hold the GOP by the balls, they drive the country further and further against the GOP--which is a win for the Democrats.

If they pass a clean budget bill, I think the Democrats win by standing strong, but the GOP wins because they can come across as the party that gave in to end the standoff. In my opinion, its the only way that the Republicans come out of this without losing their complete hide.

How is "Put the budge vote to an up/down vote" a ransom demand? Seriously dude.......The only ransom demand is by the teabaggers and the GOP....that we are going to run the entire economy off the cliff if you don't give into our demands.

In terms of elections, the Republican Party has already lost by pitting two rival wings of their organization against each other. Their House majority depends on an alliance of moderates and Tea Party candidates, and the Tea Party (1) keeps trying to seize territories in regions they don't have enough ideological influence over and (2) set a radical agenda for the entire Republican Party, making it impossible for moderates to achieve anything that might please their constituents.

They might still hold the House this upcoming election, but it hasn't done anything for the long term viability of their party.

Americans are notorious for their short attention span. Two months after this is over it will be long forgotten by most of the voters. The last shut down was for 21 days, Dec 5, 1995 to Jan 6, 1996 and by election time it was a non-factor. This one will be the same.

The Koch brothers put out a letter today that distanced themselves from what the TEAteats did with the CR and DEBT.
Treasure bills doubled in interest last night.
I'm watching Lawrence-He explains 'stuff' on economics for me.
Next up is Lawrence's take on Repub POTUS leader Christie.

You might be right.Although we got some 2014 elections coming up.That might not be enough time for the American people to forget or to stop caring.

I think that the republicans will lose more than the democrats on the government shutdown. Part of the party supports their hardline stance, but the more moderate republicans disagree with it, and it seems like independents are blaming the republicans more than the democrats. Republican supporters have more to lose to stock market losses caused by the shutdown too.

I think that if they don't pass a bill to raise the debt ceiling before the 17th, we'll see a massive backlash against both parties. Should that happen, incumbents in both parties are going to lose badly in the midterm elections.

I would love to see an election where the American people actually throw the bums out instead of just talking about it and then voting the bums back in. In 96 there was only 11 months between the shutdown and the election, We're looking at 13 today.

I just checked out Gallup on Party Affiliation, they just released it and it takes the shutdown into consideration. The numbers are

OCT 3-6 Republicans 20% Democrats 30% Independents 47% Compare those numbers to before the shutdown.
SEP 5-8 Republicans 22% Democrats 31% Independents 45%
So far the GOP lost 2 points and the Democrats 1 point while Indies rose 2 points.

The break down the 47% who call themselves independents are now,
Lean Republican 18% Lean Democratic 18% True independents 11% the break down of the 45% prior to the shut down Sep 5-8 of independents was 19% lean Republican 16% lean Democrat and 10% true independents

Elections have morphed from "win the independent vote" to "get your base to the polls." And the shutdown and default threat are sure to help motivate the Democratic base to get to the polls. Cause they are one pissed off bunch right now.

The Dems in Congress win this standoff if they get a clean funding bill passed. The Republicans lose either way.

I think it would be unwise to ignore the independents. Here are the latest states from Gallup on Party Identification. If you look at them, the Republicans have been losing ground big time since last years election. But the Democrats has lost ground too. Maybe the question is, how low can the Republicans go?

With the shutdown in progress and new stats from Gallup on Party Affiliation, it is time to compare the in shutdown stats to those of last month, pre shutdown and to those of last November of 2012.
Party Affiliation
Nov 2012 30% Republican 35% Democratic 36% Independent
Sep 2013 22% Republican 31% Democratic 45% Independent
Today 20% Republican 30% Democratic 47% Independent
Note the Republican 10 point drop from 2012 and 2 point drop from pre shutdown. The Democrats has dropped 5 point from 2012 and 1 point from pre shutdown.Then there is the 11 point rise in the independent column from last year and a 2 point rise from last month.

At this point I don't think either side is going to feasibly come out of this "winning".

Anytime conservative posters say both both sides are not winning, their partisan-type language ......
The American people got a good view today at who runs the GOP-TEAts..
The Koch letter clearly put Cantor back in his place but he is still #2 in power pol rankings.

That's because the MSM makeup their own surveys and then report them. They likely ask around the office, and threaten to fire people if they don't suck Obama's nuts.

Win or lose what? This particular argument? (The Dems have already won that...the Republicans wanted a repeal of Obamacare, if you recall...but they no longer ask for that; they then wanted the mandate & medical devices tax delayed, but they no longer ask for that. Not sure what their latest demand is. It keeps changing.)

Or win/lose the 2014 elections? Or win/lose the 2016 election?
