Who do you think will be the next president? Who do you think the candidates will be?

I think the most likely NOMINEES are:

For the Democrats:
1. Hillary Clinton
2. Barack Obama
3. John Edwards
4. Al Gore
5. Bill Richardson

For the Republicans:
1. John McCain
2. Mitt Romney
3. Mike Huckabee
4. Newt Gingrich
5. Rudy Giuliani

And the people most likely to be elected the next president are:
1. John McCain
2. Hillary Clinton
3. John Edwards
4. Barack Obama
5. Mike Bloomberg (as an independent)

However, I think McCain's chances will sour unless Iraq miraculously improves by 2008 or he changes his message.

Edwards or McCain, is my best guess.

Why did you leave out guilliany?(or however you spell it)

Howis giulliney NOT likely? He barely beats McCain in the polls!

Ya, but right now the polls are based on name recognition. I have great difficulty seeing how Giuliani could win the Republican primary, much less the election. Social conservatives openly loathe him, and moderates have better candidates to choose from.

And in the general election, I think he'd be practically unelectable. He's never even held a statewide office. And questions about his personal life would pester him throughout the campaign.

On top of all that, I have serious doubts as to whether or not Giuliani will even run for president. He hasn't been doing the groundwork that he needs to be doing to run a presidential campaign.

Giuliani will need to do more than invoke 9/11 to win...and I don't see that happening.

Tom Vilsack anyone...?

Thought not. Anyways, I'm going with Obama (obviously). I think he will win a close primary campaign against Hillary, and I think that Iraq will carry over to 2008 (God forbid) and the American people will REALLY be ready for a change.

I would say Richardson should be Obama's VP, but two minorities on the same ticket is probably political suicide. If Obama wins the nomination, he should definitely select a white male as veep candidate.

It will be interesting to see if Gore gets in the race.

If a Gore/Obama ticket emerges I think this would ensure a Democratic White House for the next 16 years.

I don't see a Clinton/Obama ticket as a possibility.

As someone else stated, if Iraq is still a mess, the republicans might as well stay home for the next election.

I could only pick ten people for the poll, so I picked the ten I thought were the most likely.

I think Giuliani is a possibility.

Guilliani might be a better possibility for dog catcher.

He was scorned and hated by much of NY City...then the events of 9/11 happened, and suddenly...he's presidential material?

I don't think so.

None of most of the above

Bloomberg is a lefty-a RINO gun hater-no way he wins the nomination
Hillary has too much baggage as does Newt
McCain's too old-too many flip flops
Rudy can't get through the nomination process
Romney will have trouble with the bible nuts
Barack and Edwards are lightweights

Hagel is a possibility
Richardson has a chance

There's a pretty strong possibility he'll run as an independent though. He's wealthy enough to finance his own campaign too. Ross Perot, minus the crazy.

I would argue the crazy quotient. BLoomberg is scum. no principles.

I voted for Hillary....but only because the question was this "Who do you think will be the next president?".......I dont care much for her....but she will win.

Personally, I like Giuliani. That being said, however, he's far too moderate to win the Republican's nomination (e.g. pro-abortion, pro-gun control....) Gingrich is the one who I would be most likely to vote for, if he gets the nomination, obviously.
Other favorites of mine are Duncan Hunter of California and Gov. Rick Perry of Texas.

There are actually people who think that Obama has any sort of chance?

What in particular are you referring to here? I understand your opposition to him re: the gun issue, but I don't know how that shows he's unprincipled.

Of course he has a chance. He's the most exciting presidential candidate in a long time. Can you imagine someone like Hillary Clinton or John McCain inspiring that kind of passion among their supporters?

First, he's not a candidate yet and in all likelihood won't be this time around.

Secondly, "exciting" might be good for Dec of 2006, but that is nowhere near enough to hold up through Nov 2008. He's the Dems version of Giuliani - Loved by the masses based on the very very little that they know about him, but as soon as he is put under closer scrutiny, the public will sour.

Neither are most of the other leading contenders.

The difference is that Giuliani's views are simply unacceptable to a large portion of the GOP base. While Obama is not an ideologue, he doesn't hold any views that will really piss off his base.

This poll is a riot.......who is leading but Hussein Obama...A guy with no experience in foreign affairs and 2 whole years in the senate........

I think Hillary is a lock for the dem nomination..thank God.....

True of course.
What makes you think so?

It just doesn't seem feasible. I'd bet that hes going to travel, test the waters, get his name out, raise the hype, and then either hope for a VP nod or angle himself for a 2012 run if the Republicans win 08.

I think Al D'Amato had it right in his meeting with Hillary this week:

Mr. D’Amato also made it clear at the lunch that he believed Mrs. Clinton would win the Democratic nomination if she sought it, and that her chief rival of late, Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, would wilt under media scrutiny.

“You always have a flavor-of-the-month candidate — at one point it was Governor Warner of Virginia, now it’s what’s-his-name, Obama — but that’s not going to hold up to a campaign by Senator Clinton,” Mr. D’Amato said. “Though they may make a good one-two.”

If they hype a possible struggle between those two for the nomination, then he bows out and she appoints him as her VP, that's a damn good P.R. move and probably a smart ticket.

The difference is that Giuliani's views are simply unacceptable to a large portion of the GOP base. While Obama is not an ideologue, he doesn't hold any views that will really piss off his base.

I don't think he's going to irritate the base, I think it's the other way around. Moderates/libertarians/conservatives across the country are not opposed to him yet because they don't know that he has a more liberal voting record that Ted Kennedy or that he voted with the Democrats 97% of the time so far.

And its not just his views that haven't gotten the play yet - it's everything. Look at how his little housing scandal is making headlines nowadays despite being 2 years before the election. And I look forward to the same huge contingent of people who condemned Bush for his coke habit coming forward to condemn Obama for his.

I knew it - I was right!

Anyone else recall my post (in the thread about Obama's big ears, looked for it but couldn't find it) that went something to the effect of:

Me said:
I bet you the GOP will find a way to incorporate Obama's middle name into their slanderous campaign if he wins the nomination

Looks like they didn't even wait that long.

IMO, that's a terrible ticket. A woman and a black? I just don't think America is ready for that as bad as that may sound.

While I agree that this type of punditry is immature, do you actually think that it's any worse than what happens to multitudes of other democrats or republicans? Bush, Cheney, Pelosi, Hillary, et al are demonized every day by millions of people. Why would Obama be exempt?

eh, who knows. I do know that if that is the ticket and the Democrats lose, there will be no end to the claims that "Racist, backwards redneck fascist republicans couldn't STAND to vote for a black or a woman, so that's why the Dems lost!!!"

Being experienced in foreign affairs isn't exactly a common attribute among candidates. Very few senators or governors have it.

Of the 25 candidates known or thought to be running for president, only Bill Richardson has extensive experience in foreign affairs.
