Not sure who you think you are arguing with or why you are arguing the point. As far as white people not starting slavery, that may well be right. I've read historical accounts that many, maybe most but not sure, slave purchased out of africa were being sold by other africans that they enslaved from another tribe/nation/group etc. As for the white trash thing, I'm not sure. There were I'm sure many different sentiments and ideologies and emotions at play. I know most southerners didn't own slaves but still supported the civil war because they viewed it as an attack on the southern way of life and also the fear that if the slaves were freed then that doesn't just mean that the former slaves would all be shipped back to africa but would rather instead live amongst the white folk as equals, which I'm sure did not sit well with most in those days. I know that was a big sticking point for even northerners who didn't believe in slavery to a certain extent. The thought was "slavery is immoral" but at the same time the question of "what do we do with these former slaves afterwards? They will be angry and uneducated and uncivil, so we would need to find some way to keep them separated from civil society etc". Which is probably the very beginnings of segregation and Jim Crow to some extent.

All of that is interesting parts of the history of the country. I'd strongly encourage people to read historical accounts, or books like 7 years a slave by frederick douglas. But it seems like your argument is gearing towards "white people didn't start it, therefor there's no need to address the lasting implications or legacy of it." I'd be interested in your explanation of what the implications of what you're saying are. Do you think everyone thinks the white man is evil because of slavery and you are saying that's not true? Are you saying that as a country we should ignore the lasting impacts of slavery, and afterwards things like segregation and Jim Crow, because we didn't start it?

Actually not true. Roots was the life history of Alex Haley. The Africans lost trade with countries that told them to stop trading slaves.

The Africans were wedded to slavery as a part of their lives.

Slavery appears in the Mesopotamian Code of Hammurabi (c. 1860 BC), which refers to it as an established institution.

This is true. But whoever suggested that white people started slavery? They are the ones who practiced it here in this country while they were here for a few centuries. But the institution of slavery itself was a near-universal feature of all human societies for all history.

What's the debate topic here? That others have practiced slavery, so white-against-black racism and discrimination today is OK?
