White House tries to bypass Pelosi on shutdown talks, but moderate Democrats rebuff offer

1/15/19
WASHINGTON – A group of moderate Democrats turned down the White House’s invitation to a luncheon Tuesday to discuss border security as the Trump administration sought to bypass House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and win support for border wall funding. Pelosi and other Democratic leaders weren’t invited to meeting, but the speaker had given her colleagues permission to attend. None of them accepted the offer, however, and the meeting was scheduled to go on with only Republicans attending. Democrats “support the notion of continued dialogue,” said New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. But Democratic members invited to the White House luncheon need to ask themselves whether the administration is truly looking to end the government shutdown or just stage a photo op, Jeffries said. Rep. J. Luis Correa, D-Calif., was among the lawmakers who decided to skip the meeting. "Congressman Correa welcomes the opportunity to talk with the president about border security, as soon as the government is reopened," said Andrew Scibetta, Correa’s spokesman.

The old "divide and conquer" routine. They actually thought anyone would fall for this con? Reopen our government Donnie.

Donald J. Trump on 11 December 2018 said:
“I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down.”

Nancy come out of your walled home and do what is right. Support the 5.5 billion to make our Southern border
safer and more secure.

Yeah, the great negotiator's flanking move...rebuffed by a unified Democratic party.

Border security fine...no wall. Just like both Houses with Republican's in support of, have already passed separately!

Well that was dumb, Trump must be surrounded by "yes" people who tell him whatever he wants to hear. No way this strategy of undermining House leadership was going to work.

Wait, they weren't tempted by leftover Big Macs?

Nope, she is doing exactly what I elected Dems to do. Maybe tell your boy Trump, since Mexico is going to pay for the wall, as soon as there is enough money in that "Mexico Account" to fund the wall then he can have it. Not before then. Blame Trump for lying.

Don't all homes have walls?

Don't forget Ceilings. I love how folks that talk about walls for houses forget they also have ceilings and not just walls.

Your choir is shrinking.

Some people are too proud to admit they were duped, some too stupid to realize it, and a whole lot of other things can explain why people insist Trump is always right. But again, that choir is shrinking. Spew elsewhere.

The first commandment of liberal Dems: Thou shall not compromise with Trump on ANYTHING regardless of how much chaos and damage it causes or how much Trump will give us of what we want.

Who was the one who walked out of negotiations again?

So what is Trump offering as a compromise?

Trump isn't always right but he's right about the border and the wall. There is no rational argument for why we shouldn't be protecting our sovereignty and security in the strongest way possible. Just a few years ago, all the top Dems were adamant about the dangers of illegal immigration. Obama, Schumer, Pelosi, all of them. Now they've done a 180 simply because of Trump. They can never be shown to have agreed with Trump on anything.

The Dems have become a sad parody. They used to support the American worker but now find supporting illegals to be a higher priority. They used to warn us repeatedly about abuses of civil rights by unaccountable agencies of government but are all in on the FBI's quest to unseat Trump. They used to protest in the streets against war but now support permanent military adventures in the ME. They used to express grave concern about monopolies and the abuses of mega corporations but now gladly support Google, Facebook and Twitter because they have a clear anti-conservative bias. My how things have changed. My how Trump can turn people inside out.

So what is Trump offering as a compromise?

He already had earlier offered 1.8 million DACA people as part of a border deal when the Dems only asked for 700,000 and they rejected it. There's no telling what he may offer but the Dems have to be willing to listen and consider it rather than taking their ball and going home.

He may have "offered" it but those 1.8M never made it into any proposed legislation or CRs. It ended up being 700K and he also wanted $25B for his wall. When they wanted to up that to 1.8M -- as he once offered -- Trump reneged. So your figures are wrong.

That said, what is he offering now?

The article says Trump wasn't willing to compromise more on the dreamers. I think giving the Dems nearly three times what they has originally requested is quite a compromise. The bottom line is that the Dems don't want a wall. Not now. Not ever. They should simply say so and the voters can decide if they like it.

Sorry. They were willing to give Trump $25B in exchange for 1.8M dreamers, and Trump said no. That was Trump.

The article says? You don’t know without reading an article from less than 1 year ago?

The Dems were willing to give Trump the full $25B for his wall in exchange for providing a pathway to citizenship for 1.8M undocumented immigrants (Trump had made the same offer earlier), but Trump said no and would only agree to postponing action on DACA enrollees until 2020. The Dems said no, instead deciding their odds would be better with the courts, which is where DACA enrollees fate now rests. That is how we got to where we are now.

While keeping the visa lottery and chain migration. If we're at all serious about this issue, they have to go.

The Dems could have taken the original offer. They insist on keeping chain migration and the lottery. Therein lies the problem.

NPR interviewed one of the "problem solvers." while he didn't go into detail, it's wasn't too much of a stretch to read between the lines. my guess is that the great wall of derp will get ~2.5 billion wasted on it and the government will reopen. a less solid prediction is that Trump will be emboldened and will hold the budget hostage in the future to get a fresh installment of wasted tax dollars for his ego wall.

Trump’s problem now because he lost Congress.
