Ending cash bail will not automatically put people charged with crimes on the streets," a White House official told Fox News. "It just means that whether you get bail should be based on the threat you pose, and not how much money you have in your bank account."

"There shouldn’t be a separate criminal justice system for wealthy Americans," the official added.

Earlier this month, Milwaukee prosecutors requested just $1,000 bail for Brooks after he was arrested and charged for punching his girlfriend in the face and then running her over with his car in a gas station parking lot. Prosecutors now admit that bail was "inappropriately low."

Here is how the dishonesty of the Right works. They bring up two issues which at best have a distant connection, deliberately designed to be inflammatory when put together. Then they scream, "Look at this! Look how horrible these unrelated things are when we put them together!"

The goal is not to get you to think. The goal is to get you to react.

Ending cash bail is a big mistake. A very carefully conducted study may be needed and then adjust bail based on the offense, past record, and whether the current charge is violent or if they have a history of violent crime. Repeat offenders should not get cash free bail.

Biden doubles down on something stupid? Must be a day ending in "Y"

they ARE LINKED. The murderous car driver had an extensive record and low bails. Then the last time he was given bailit was 1k for runiing over his wife - how is this not "linked" ? Absurdly low bail had him out on the streets when he killed and maimed as he ran over a person before.

Suppose that was you kids or granny killed? all because of a corrupt DA, who essentially let a killer free
The situation was outrageous

It's really simple. If cash bail is eliminated the release of an accused would be based on his likelihood to attend trial and the possibility he may pose a danger if released. In the case of the Waukesha attacker he'd be held until trial because he poses a danger.

It's already in the 8th amendment "no excessive bail", and a defendant can appeal if they think bail is too high.
Bail is also used as a cudgel to get a defendant to show up for court. another "incentive" to do so
(besides an arrest warrant that defendants can just blow off in very lax jurisdictions such as the Wi DA here)

Bail was used pre-Magna Carta. It's another tool of the courts to ensure a defendant shows up

Cash bail favors the rich.

"We've always done it this way" is hardly a ringing endorsement for continuing a practice. Also pre-Magna Carta: boiling and burning alive, branding, and being drawn and quartered.

Makes sense to me.

^ Next step in the right-wing playbook: Deny and deflect.

bail IS ALREADY set by threat to society, as well as severity of crime.
These people are clueless
And easy for a.rich murderer to make and a poor one not.

Every prosecutor knows that those who make bail get better justice for themselves than those rotting in jail. Harder to leverage a plea.

dont forget bails bondmen will do it for 10%. Also relying on a judges discretion would open up other avenues of complaint form the left of unfairness ( judge took race into account, or class or whatever)
The advantage of bail is that the amount is primarily based on the severity of the crime+ any flight risk
Theses are more objective then just leaving it upto a judge to determine risk

the leverage is to keep jails from overcrowding - why pleas happen in the first place

Their solution to that was private prisons. We have Orange is the New Black to thank for that being exposed ffor the inhumane system that turned out to be.

You know that we've noticed how doggedly y'all try to steer conversations back to the provided narrative, right?

narrative? Cash bail is hardly a "narrative. I'm no fan of private prisons either - but overcrowding causes the pleas
Private prisons replace public prisons - overcrowding happens either way

Sorry, but no. I did federal time. The entire system is designed to create failure. Like all government they need to spend all of the money they get. And recidivism is their cash cow. They throw folks without my skills and adapatability into a totally unnatural lifestyle and do nothing to help them reintegrate. Quite the opposite in fact.

They make it as hard as possible. So they can point at those who fail to justify their budgets and jobs

We are the richest country in the world and imprison the highest percentage of our population.

Something isn't right.

*ouch* @federal time.. In that case there is no sentencing reductions for good behavior or release for overcrowding.
I dont know much about pre-trial pleas.but I assume there must be prosecutors williong to deal for a conviction for a lessor charge?
There are some programs to help incarcerated - some teach skills and follow up on inmate's releases in which case the ex-con has a decent chance of success. I'm not going to waste you time talking about support structures though, they are far from common ,

USA is a violent culture. Always has been. The gansters of the 20's and 30s the music, the gangs, the hardened criminal for arrest after arrest.
Many countries are much more tough on their criminals. No Bill of Rights, and a lock 'em mentality does reduce recidivism..but at a cost

No, they're not clueless; they're liars.

Yeah, 'cause it's working so well elsewhere - pay no attention to rising crime rates.

Nope, he answered your challenge and linked the two directly.

Do you even know what the words deny or deflect actually mean?

No, they're not clueless; they're liars.
delusions, lies to themselves, ideologs..
One has to have a certain pre-conception (instead of empirical measurements) of how things should be = how things are.

It's delusional and harmful perspective for individual's mental clarity and society as a whole when expressed as policy
