WASHINGTON, Aug 30 (Reuters) - The Trump administration is advancing plans to rename the Department of Defense as the Department of War, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday, citing a White House official, after U.S. President Donald Trump raised the prospect on Monday.
Restoring the Department of War name for the government's largest department would likely require congressional action, but the White House is exploring alternative methods to implement the change, the report said.
Republican Representative Greg Steube of Florida filed an amendment to the annual defense policy bill that would change the name of the department, indicating some Republican support in Congress for the change.
The White House gave no details, but underscored Trump's comments this week emphasizing the U.S. military's offensive capabilities.
"As President Trump said, our military should be focused on offense – not just defense – which is why he has prioritized warfighters at the Pentagon instead of DEI and woke ideology. Stay tuned!" said White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly, using the initials DEI to refer to programs aimed at increasing diversity, equity and inclusion.
Trump raised the idea of rebranding the Defense Department as the "Department of War" while speaking with reporters in the Oval Office on Monday, saying it "just sounded to me better."
"It used to be called the Department of War and it had a stronger sound," Trump said. "We want defense, but we want offense too ... As Department of War we won everything, we won everything and I think we're going to have to go back to that."

This would be so wrong on so many levels.
Because, globally, the name change implies that the United States is a global aggressor rather than being a stabilizing force in the world, by which we should be known. Instead, it puts the United States in the spotlight as a hyper-aggressive war fighter. The name change destroys the decades-long image of the U.S. as a global peacemaker. It's a negative message to send out to the world. Trump is exhibiting 'little dick' syndrome. Why exactly would it be wrong on so many levels.
I mean yeah it’s kind of pointless and a waste of time but it simply doesn’t matter that much.

How much more can the U.S. be seen as an isolationist than it's seen by the world today? Trump has avoided any pertinent entanglements in Ukraine and Israel/Gaza. He passes the buck to NATO when it comes to protecting Ukraine from Russia's aggression. Trump has done nothing regarding international cooperation with our allies and instead, has focused solely on his own dictatorial ambitions right here in the U.S. Trump has shown little interest in engagement with the rest of the world. He shows an ongoing blindness and indifference, toward Ukraine and Palestine, but he savored the opportunity to invite Putin to Alaska, or, as Trump referred to it as 'Russia'. What did that meeting accomplish, nothing other than elevating the status of Putin, who incidentally, is merrily joining with China and India as the new global axis of power, thanks to an unprincipled, ignorant imbecile who is destroying the United States as a superpower and world leader.Well I mean I guess that’s an interesting opinion.
Not backed by much but still interesting. Am nothing more then an opinion.
And seeing as how we were at what was at or close to our most isolationist phase when we had a war dept I am not sure you can really back that up.
And frankly it comes off as more just I hate temp then any rational reason.
Everything Trump touches dies/turns to shitThis is actually a very historic event, if trump is advocating the US become a nation with a military for offense.
No president has ever taken that position. It's a core US value to not be a country that starts wars, officially.
The US has a history and problem that it has started a lot of wars, but there has always been a pretense respected to say it was defense.
It is a radical violation for trump to say he wants the US to have a military for offense. It should be a strong issue for the American people who should demand Congress reign him in and likely impeach him, and it will be an issue for the world which will further turn to anti-US alliances, including BRICS which already has most of the people in the world and is growing.
