If there wasn't enough proof out there already that the GOP is basically anti-American, meaning anti-American citizen (not corporation), here's the smoking gun...

White House, GOP Leaders Plan All-Out Assault on Federal Protections

Apparently rushing to lock in a long-sought goal before the fall elections, GOP congressional leaders may bring to a vote within weeks a proposal that could literally wipe out any federal program that protects public health or the environment--or for that matter civil rights, poverty programs, auto safety, education, affordable housing, Head Start, workplace safety or any other activity targeted by anti-regulatory forces.

With strong support from the Bush White House and the Republican Study Committee, the proposal would create a "sunset commission"--an unelected body with the power to recommend whether a program lives or dies, and then move its recommendations through Congress on a fast-track basis with limited debate and no amendments.

Bush and the Republican Congress (with a little help from some asshole Democrats) have been systematically taking away our Constitutional rights for the last 5 years and I am sick of it! I certainly hope I'm not alone come this falls mid-term elections.

I mean, the idea of a group that could efficiently cut down on the federal beurocracy by ending programs that are no longer effective, what's wrong with that.

I'm uncomfortable with the current president or congress appointing these people, but in the abstract this sounds like a good idea.
Are you that naive to think the GOP would be doing something for our benefit?

Alright, no, I don't think republicans would be doing something for our benefit. I also don't think democrats would be doing anything in our favor, and until we stop allowing ourselves to be completely dicked over by the government we have to judge each idea by the merits of the idea, and not by the merit of the person who had the idea.

And there is nothing wrong with the idea of getting rid of out of date, inefficient programs. Man, it really steams me about liberals, you complain the defecit, and yet you also act like cutting spending might as well be knife raping poor people in front of their children. And I can't comprehend how one could argue against the abstract of this idea, which is all that I said I support.
Your complaint against liberals is a valid one. But it has nothing to do with me. I don't believe in handouts. I have been supporting myself since I was 14. I believe, in general, everyone should earn their own way in this world. And I'm not against cutting the fat out of government. But I draw the line when that fat happens to be civil rights or lack of judicial or congressional oversight. I agree that not all things in government need to have a committee to monitor the law or action. However, this Administration has a track history of not having anything it does be monitored. So any new bill that furthers this norm, I hold very suspect.

well yeah, I guess I should be more careful, it wasn't at you.

That's why I'm saying I support this idea in abstract, in the stead of supporting this idea in reality. Who would appoint the people to the board? President Bush? How long are their terms? Is Bush allowed to select all republicans? and so on and so forth.

I believe it would be possible to do this well. It won't happen, but if we didn't have sniveling children filling all of 2 and a lot of the other of the branches of government, this could be done (although, this raises the question whether we'd actually need this if we didn't elect sniveling children)
I'm down with that!

My goal is to put the neocons in the un-employment line. Give the reins to the Democrats. Then turn the heat up on them and start the whole process over again. And keep doing that until we get a representative government once more.

I might as well believe in the tooth fairy. You know as well as I do for our system of government to work, we have to have a well informed republic. Which we ain't....
