White House accused in Iran intel row (1 Viewer)

How curious, it has long been known that Iranian assistance was given when selecting a democratic Government for Afghanistan, so why is this considered 'Classified imformation'?

It might be in the details. This is total conjecture, as nobody but those involved know, at least as yet. But, to proceed with the conjecture: As you say, it has long been known that Iran assisted with our efforts in Afghanistan - it should be noted that it their assistance was limited to those aspects that were also in their interest. But the details of who, what, how, and where are generally still not known to any great degree. And it is those details, particularly with respect to sources and methods, that the CIA typically objects to revealing. So, just guessing, while the broad outlines of Iran's assitance in Afghanistan is well known, it may be that Leverett's piece went into too much detail and revealed info about people or methods that are still classified.

It may also be the case - more conjecture - that the info that is still classified is actually in the public domain (via leaks, release of info and/or statements by Iranian officials, etc.) and should probably be declassified but hasn't as yet. If so, the CIA review board would still be obligated to redact the material until such time.

All in all, Leverett sounds a little whiny in the interview, making it a bit hard to be sympathetic to his situation.

This is the same subject as a thread started earlier by jujuman13, "White House accused in Iran intel row". Mods should probably combine the two.
