section 834b
(a) Every law enforcement agency in (deleted) shall fully
cooperate with the United States Immigration and Naturalization
Service regarding any person who is arrested if he or she is
suspected of being present in the United States in violation of
federal immigration laws.
(b) With respect to any such person who is arrested, and suspected
of being present in the United States in violation of federal
immigration laws, every law enforcement agency shall do the
following:
(1) Attempt to verify the legal status of such person as a citizen
of the United States, an alien lawfully admitted as a permanent
resident, an alien lawfully admitted for a temporary period of time
or as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of
immigration laws. The verification process may include, but shall not
be limited to, questioning the person regarding his or her date and
place of birth, and entry into the United States, and demanding
documentation to indicate his or her legal status.

For some reason, the link only works for a few minutes after the URL is copied. Why, I have no idea.

Surprisingly, it is California with that law on the books. I'm not sure how many people here realize that our immigration law isn't really much different from that of Arizona.
 
If you read through 1070 - and your linked to thing (which I had to find via search in their system) you'll find that their procedures very greatly. . . .1070 is very different than 834b,c.

HUGE difference is that in SB1070 a person found to be here illegal is detained/fined - and put through a process of litigation. SB1070 defines exactly what fines and fees are to be exacted and other measures to be taken when it comes to those who harbor or hire illegals. It makes references to federal-regulations and so forth, but by setting fees and punishments - it also goes above and beyond these federal regulations.

It's these 'beyond but in reference to' things that Arizona's in hot water for.

In 834b,c they simply follow federal procedure - while defining within their own codes and making no effort what so ever to decide how to detain/punish and even extradite an illegal. . . they adhere to the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service regulations - but go no further. . . which is how things were done in Arizona up until the passing of SB1070.

SB1070 was written and passed because just telling the government about these people didn't change anything - the government didn't act.
