If you have Google Earth 4, type 50°50'53.27" N 4°21'50.29" E

That's exactly where my student room is!

In a circle of around 1 mile, you can see the Belgian Federal Parliament, the Flemish Parliament, the Royal Parc, the Royal Palace (in the south of the royal parc), the grave of the unknown soldier, the St Michel Cathedral...

If you go a few hundred yards westwards, you'll see the Grand Place and its gothic City Hall.

Then go back to the Royal Palace and look at the statue of Godefroi de Bouillon and the "old england department store".

Eastwards there is a big park, the Jublepark, with the military museum.

Also look at the streets: they are not regular like in the USA, there is no precize scheme.

Oh, and never forget: the best "french/liberty" fries (in fact belgian fries :D) in the world are precizely there: 50°50'51.47" N 4°21'00.18" E

=>>> also have a look at the Atomium, a unit cell of an iron crystal , magnified 165 billion times :2wave:

I believed those were only buildings for business in Manhattan!

My dream is to go and visit the USS Intrepid! The SR-71 is still there?

And tere are the Mavericks playing at the stadium :rofl

...and the thousands of separated houses! Thats exactly like the place I was hosted in when I was in Cali!

It still is mostly the Financial district, but in recent years, and especially after 9/11, it's become more residential. With the housing boom and a drop in demand for office space, office buildings are being converted into apartments as fast as they can. It's pretty fun, but not as lively at night as it was in any of the places I lived a few years ago.

Not at this exact moment, because they towed it to NJ to be refurbished, but it will be back in 2008.

You can still see it in Google Earth here though:

That's so cool, I had no idea those places had roots in the names of other places like that. Thanks for sharing!

o **** the intrepid is gone?? I didn't notice.

In early July 2006, it was announced that the Intrepid will undergo renovations and repairs, along with Pier 86 itself. It closed on October 1, 2006, in preparation for its towing to Bayonne, New Jersey for repairs, and later Staten Island, NY for renovation and temporary docking. On November 6, 2006, an attempt to remove the aircraft carrier from the pier for restoration was temporarily put on hold by the Coast Guard. Despite the use of several tugs with a combined 30,000 horsepower, officials said the ship was stuck in 24 years worth of accumulated silt and would not move.

On November 11, 2006 the United States Navy announced that it would spend $3 million to dredge the mud and silt from under the Intrepid. The effort was led by the United States Navy Supervisor of Salvage and Diving with assistance from the United States Army Corps of Engineers, United States Coast Guard, and contractors. The teams operated for three weeks to clear the site of mud and silt.

Throughout the last several years, the Intrepid museum has operated a fund for the restoration, raising over $60 million to refit the Intrepid, to improve its exhibits for visitors, and improve Pier 86.

On December 5, 2006, after the removal of 39,000 cubic yards of muck from under the ship and around its four giant screws, Intrepid was successfully removed from its pier and was towed to Bayonne. The Intrepid is scheduled to return to Pier 86 in November of 2008.

Hahah yea, it was pretty hilarious when they tried to tow it away and then realized it was completely stuck in the mud. Took em a few tries.

On monday evening I took my camera and went to the center of the city.

DSC06085.jpg

The cityhall tower and the statue of Don Quichotte, seen from my street.

DSC06132.jpg

The cityhall (anno 1403; 300 feet high). The legend says when the architect discovered it was not symetric, he jumped off the top of the tower!

DSC06116.jpg

The "house of the king", in front of the cityhall. Thats a museum now.

Next week I'll take pictures by day, but now the sky is gray and its not very nice.

So, I know where Americanwoman & RightinNYC live. What about the others?

If you've got Google Earth, don't hesitate! Tell us where you live, or where you've been on holiday!

Yesterday I've visited the ruins of Villers-la-Ville's Abbey. That's there:
