they just flashed a new reprot of fidel castro out in public smiling for all. people in cuba are hoping he dies sooner than later

The news media had him already dead several times, before. He's like the Energizer Bunny. You can't get rid of him. So he dies, his brother, Raul will take over with more of the same.

Unfortunately in perceiving an imperialist power at their door and a negative reciprocity from the US govt. (who has at times in history been in fault with cuba) they are unlikely to liberalize.

how about kids with blackberries, elections. and of couse having a car or some music made sometime after 1959 ??

How about letting them sort out their own destiny without undue and certainly unwanted interference from primarily the US?

You got something against cuban music, buddy? Im sure a cuban would think likewise.

i'am a cuban musician, my family came here after batista

When he dies, he'll go on my list of "Dead people it would be fun to have a conversation with the ghost of." So I could ask him "Well, now that it's all over, was it worth it, do you think?"

I've always wondered what people like him think in their last moments.

They will have to do more reforms just like Vietnam did after HCM died. I long for the day when evil imperialist food from McDonalds and the likes of Wal-Mart will be in Cuba! And multi colored SUV's!

Raul Castro was always more vicious than Fidel. I wouldn't underestimate the "Amor a la Revolution" these people have. Hell, most of Latin America is in love with socialism and always have been.

He'll probably die with a big smile on his face thinking "i showed you Americans and your illegitemate embargo's".

He wins either way.

Yep, it's only the people that lose, but screw them, right?

Unfortunately everybody loses under communism. But the revolution was and remains a populist movement, which still enjoys a large support base, and probably will continue to enjoy a large support base for as long as America allows Cuba to victimize itself.

I doubt if the government allows them to buy Blackberries or nice cars. The only one with nice cars would be the ruling elite. You are comparing Cuba with the US. Cuba is an oppressive, communist regime.

I remember when Castro was a Cuban freedom fighter against Batista, who supposedly was just as bad as Castro and was supported by the US. Castro claimed he was just a freedom fighter, until he and his henchmen took over the government. Then he declared he was a communist.

Yep the liberal U.S. will be the reason for the unliberal policies of the communist monarchy. The U.S. is responsible for the Castro's regime oppression of the Cuban people.

The revolution feeds off the "injustice of the US against Cuba" [embargo] and apparently, its working.

The revolution is self perpetuating because anyone who dissents is thrown in prison. U.S. policy has nothing to do with it. WTF does U.S. trade embargoes have to do with the totalitarian nature of the Castro regime?

Think of the value of all those 'Classic' motors, someone is sure going to make a killing.

It will be like New cars for old, heh heh heh.

Yep, the people support it so much that the 'flimsy boat industry' is thriving over there....Look, Castro, and Che combined their murderous take over against the will of the people, that is how communist always do things, bloodshed or not.

I know that. But surely your not denying, regardless of the violence of communism, that it was a popular movement which enjoyed much support. Of course once they actually took power things changed. They started clamping down and the opression began. Im sure if the Cuban authorities never went so far as to censor the media and restrict public speech against the revolution, and people in Cuba saw it for what it really is, just a communism with dynastic rule by a bunch of greedy fools who have done everything BUT help the "people", then it would all fall apart.

Notice the quotation marks i used. Its meant to highlight that it is, of course, untrue, but Cuba useses it nonetheless.
The embargo's which have helped cause the current situation (most done by none other than Castro's regime of course) has allowed Cuba to "victimize" itself and that has garneded up support for the socialists in Cuba.

Im not saying remove the embargo's to help Cuba thrive and its communism propsper. I just dont think he no longer retains the right to have embargo's. It no longer poses a threat to us and it is in a region (near South America) which has very socialist roots anyway, so it wont change much, not that Cuba has the power or the money to exert much influence anyway, and judging from its communist regime and size i doubt that will ever be the case.
If we claim to travel to the other side of the world to defeat "evil regimes and restore peaceful democracy" for the sake of human rights and human dignity, we can remove embargo's on Cuba and at least claim we did what we could without intervention to end the somewhat brewing humanitarian issues there.

EDIT: We dont do politics at public schools :p
