I didn't say anything about a "political coup", either.
Why are you switching words around? Trying to find something special?
If Trump is impeached and then convicted and put out of office, what would you think? Would you believe the evidence put forward by the investigations and thus it was the right thing to do? Would you think this is all a witch hunt and that it was nothing but a legal political coup?
And then 50 years from now there Chelsea Clinton and her hubby will be sitting at a piano singing
Boy the way Bob Mueller preyed
Pleas that made the hit parade.
Friends of Trump thought they had it made.
Those were the days.

To answer the thread question, there are two sides to the question of successfully removing him from office through impeachment (let's just pretend for the sake of argument that that would happen):
1. If your priority is justice, you won't like impeachment because the end result is that after he leaves office he would receive an immediate pardon from Pence. I have zero doubt that Trump has a quite a bit of dirt on Pence by now, and if Pence doesn't pardon him then Trump will be all to happy to air that dirt publicly.
2. If your priority is the welfare of the country then you'll like impeachment because at least he's out of office.
This is a difficult choice for many because, by now, the need for justice is nearly as great as the need for the country to be rid of an abomination at its helm.
By the way, even the two points above are probably meaningless because the roadmap for him to avoid justice and impeachment is so clearly illustrated that he may as well be above the law, which leaves a third angle to the question:
3. Impeachment should be done anyway because it clarifies our values just by trying to remove somebody we consider to be an abomination. By not even making the effort we're making a statement about our values, and that statement isn't good.
shrug...those were not my words. They came from the OP. Grouse at him if you don't like them.
The OP also used those words.Mycroft said:...it could only be judged a "legal political coup"
They are your words, stop lying:
The OP also used those words.
You claimed if those conditions were met, it could only be judged as a legal, political coup.
Why don't you just correct yourself, and take a swing at the OPs bad word usage, instead of denial?
If Trump is impeached Pence will probably be impeached as well. I would imagine both would be convicted. However, there is very little chance of Trump being impeached and convicted by the GOP controlled senate. In fact, the GOP senate should be impeached.
I do wonder how many members of the GOP senate have been compromised by Russia.

Given that impeachment is, but its very nature, a political action and not a legal one, the asinine claim that would amount to a 'legal coup' is just that: asinine.
I didn't say it would amount to a "legal coup". I used the OP's term: "legal political coup".
First, impeachment by the House and conviction by the Senate is both legal under our constitution and is political in nature. And a coup has two meanings and the second one is a notable or successful stroke, which taking these actions would be. So to use the term a legal political coup is correct.
the senate most likely won't convict even if the evidence of serious crimes is overwhelming. there are too many Trumpists in the senate to even approach two thirds, and they will vote with him over the law.
You don't need to rely on your gut to arrive at that conclusion. Senators Hatch and Grassley provided a convenient sign of things to come once impeachment happens:
"Hatch dismisses allegations of Trump crimes over hush money. Asked if he had any concerns, Hatch said: “The Democrats will do anything to hurt this president.” Told it was alleged by SDNY, Hatch told me: “Okay but I don’t care; all I can say is he’s doing a good job as President.”
Hatch added this when asked if he was concerned about allegations. “No because I don’t think he was involved in crimes but even then, you know, you can make anything a crime under the current laws; if you want to you can blow it way out of proportion you can do a lot of things.”
Hatch also told me: “President Trump before he became president that’s another world. Since he’s become president this economy has charged ahead. ... And I think we ought to judge him on that basis other than trying to drum up things from the past that may or may not be true.”
Grassley, the Senate Judiciary chairman, similarly dismisses the federal prosecutors’ argument: “They based it on what a liar says, so it hurts the credibility of it.”

not surprising. "yeah, he did it, so what" is probably all that they are going to have left when this is done. if that happens, we have an office that is effectively shielded from the rule of law. i doubt that this will go well for us as a nation.
And die of old age before spending one day in a courtroom. The one thing Trump is truly very good at (with his fleet of high priced attorneys) is avoiding consequences for his actions. But he won't be impeached. He'll finish his term, run for re-election, lose, and then be indicted for his corruption.

I'd think Christmas came early.

That’s a possibility. I think Trump would/will do whatever he can to protect his family, but if it comes down to the kids or Trump, my $ on Trump saving his own hide. And his children may end up being thrown under the bus in the process.
I would not be surprised if he got primaried out.
i try not to think about imaginary things that will never happen.
I would dance naked down 5th Avenue if that happened.
