This is very intriguing.

Could a three-mile-wide event in the Indian basin leaving an eighteen-mile-wide crater, make a tidal wave big enough to push a boat up Mount Ararat?

Not to worry, we know the literary nature of the story, the flood left many peoples in 2807 B.C., but many it washed away.

Maybe the caravan priests knew of the formation when they gave the specs on the ark, so they would have this frenzy.

It's all bullshit. Two of every kind of animal on earth, seriously, and their feed, seriously? What people won't believe when they don't believe in themselves.

My view of much of the OT is that there is a thread of cultural or moral truth in a lot of the ancient stories and it would not surprise me if some sort of flooding event occurred in ancient times. We see similar themes in stories like Gilgamesh as well.

Yes indeed. 1) Every time a Creation resets, it goes through the story of Adam and Eve. The Caravan priests had this vision. The Tree of Knowledge is the same across Creation, meat-eating slows your progress toward God, keeps you from having visions, makes the body putrid and decrepit and the soul ignorant and is a common way for a race to grow its brain size, so it can be taken over by a vegetarian cult and put to austerity.

Local flooding. Sure.

Also, an inland sea draining? Sure, stuff like that can happen before a massive earthquake (later on in the bible, "and the mountains skipped like rams").

Of course it all got jumbled up and parsed out in to various oral traditions, then eventually recombined, then eventually written down by someone who had the wit to also write "and by the way this is all totes the word of 'God'". But yeah, I'd be shocked if there wasn't at least some twisted nuggets of factual basis underlying some of the stories.

Nobody got turned to salt, though. Maybe a king had some famous upstart drowned in the dead sea and when they were pulled out and dried, was covered in salt...
