What the Bible Says About Liberals (Wow!)

Coincidentally enough, I was looking up passages in the bible that the Westborough Baptist Church references on their picket signs (because that's the fun sort of stuff I get up to in my copious free time) when I came across this entirely applicable part of 2 Peter 2 KJV):

9The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

10But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.

11Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord.

12But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;

Someone tell the Tea Party!

EDIT: More seriously; you can't expect terms to mean then what they did now. The bible uses the language of the time, and that language changes over time - for example, bats are described as birds several times in the Old Testament (Leviticus 11, to be precise). I've said before that you can interpret the bible to mean pretty much anything you set your mind to.

In this context, the term liberal is in the sense of someone who gives generously. This means that many people who have received public acclaim for generosity will be exposed.

Just to let you guys know, I do heavily regret making this topic. As some members may recall, one of my flaws is that when I notice something interesting, I think "Wow, this might make a good conversation on DP" and I get happy and I post it completely without thinking first. Honestly, I really didn't think it would be taken as an insult because I didn't mean it that way, and yes I figured it probably meant something different. Unfortunately, when this happens, and I feel guilty about the thread, it's too late to stop it, and I have to apologize because I made a mistake and some I think take it as a copout or pullback, which it isn't, just an apology. I think I like discussing this stuff, but actual arguments and fighting is too much for me.

With that said, I don't want to post anymore from the Bible about politics, because I think it might be disrespectful to the Lord as well, since it would be implying something it doesn't mean. So I won't add Jesus's words into it (the judgement I meantioned) because I know better now than to do that.

And I knew very well about the rich man, and all the helping of everyone, but the thread was meant to be about the wording of that passage. I NEVER thought it meant Conservatives got some kind of pass because I know better than that because we ALL fall short and there is none righteous.

Belle, I looked up the passage over several translations and noticed that the KJV is the one that uses liberal. The word today and back than had totally different meaning. Heck, you still have people today pointing to the 1800s and saying that liberal meant something different in that short amount of time comparatively. This leads me to believe that you have to look at the context of a particular biblical translation as part of what you are reading. Assuming the word and meaning has never changed is outside of that context, especially when no other mainstream translation uses that terminology.

Also, look at a few commentaries on that passage, I looked at some and none of them mentioned political ideology either.

Belle, my unsolicited opinion is that it is often good to talk about these things, especially since putting it out in the open gives people a chance to learn from each other. I can't see where you did anything wrong.

I've loved the little booger since I met her. Refreshing, enthusiastic, bubbly, innocent, (perhaps a tad naive,) with the heart of an angel (figuratively speaking...of course...) That alone gets anybody a pass in my book. I'm sure St. Peter will agree. (Figuratively speaking...of course... :mrgreen:)

First of all, she didn't make an argument. She asked a question.

I find it so funny that someone can bring something to the discussion in the most polite way possible yet the usual band of howler monkeys sets in with attack after attack against them.

Not too much good, thanks for asking. I got too bothered by the news to want to read any or post, that happens sometimes. Last summer I found out I have cronic kidney disease because the One I was born with didn't grow to do the work of 2, so the function's low. But I have no symptoms and no dialysis, just watch my protein intake and I'm all right. :) I lost my male Rottwieler who I raised from a puppy a few months ago to heartworms, and at the same time my dad hurt his back and they found cancer. :( He's in the hospital right now and I've actually been posting from my grandparents's.

But my dogs did have puppies before he went, and that was good. :) And I've just been trying to relax despite the circumstances, and I've been having a nice summer with my grandparents in spite of circumstances. ^^
 
There are religious people on the left. It is insulting to say otherwise.
