"If you don't love this country, leave."

If you don't love this country, or what's happening in it, or its government, you SHOULD:

  • Run for office
  • Donate to a candidate you believe in
  • Organize or participate in a lawful protest
  • Contact your representatives
  • Read newspapers instead of Twitter
  • Volunteer
  • Donate to causes you believe in
  • Vote in every election

Are we done with the jingoism now?

Good.

There is absolutely no reason to argue that "leave' shouldnt be one of the options. If you hate it here, leave. Nothing wrong with saying that whether you are discussing a party you are at or the country you happen to live in.

Then trump should leave

It is responsible to let people know that if they are suffering from anger or depression with how they feel things are, that they should leave the country, find a good therapist and take care of their emotional well-being.

Leaving is fine. I'd rather people who don't care for the United States and don't care to work to change it live elsewhere. Saying "go back to your home country" to someone working for change on the other hand is nativist and has no place in dignified discourse. And saying it to an American citizen because they are not white is racist and makes no sense.

Criticism and critique is not hate. Not necessarily as the Right asserts arbitrarily and summarily.

What is a shortcoming is lecturing, scolding and cussing out those one dislikes for their politics. It's when one can't debate that one might well consider a new avocation.

You mean stuff like this?

Criticism and griping does not mean one HATES America, and Trumpers know this, they're just eager to play with a toy that gets dragged out once every generation, the "All time love it or leave it conversation stopper".

An old Navy buddy who is a "frequent guest" over at the Long Beach VA said that the only response to "Love it or leave it" is a punch right in the jaw.
Of course he wishes he was still fit enough but he said that in his day he doled out a few and I can see that it was probably the case.

Sorry but I think he's right.
Love it or leave it is meant to stop conversation.
A good punch in the jaw also stops conversation, too.
I see his logic!

Familiarize yourself with the Constitution. While the New Democratic Party is working hard to overturn it, the 1st Amendment is still in force.

People need to learn to ignore anyone who offends them.

Thanks, well said! I love this country, born and raised here, have had a very good life here and don't plan on leaving. I have criticized some actions of the government in the past, such as wars like Iraq, etc. But just because I acknowledge certain negative things does not mean I hate the USA, and won't put in writing what I'd say to someone who told me to my face to 'love it or leave it'. Being white helps not to be told that....hmmmm, Trump's mantra, 'make America white again'...MAWA.

"Love it or leave it" isn't about offending anybody, it's about intimidating them.
It is difficult to impossible to ignore some jingoistic types if they're truly committed to their boilerplate dogma.

No, there are actually people who hate America. People who believe that the country is filled with racists and Nazis, despise our economic system and seek to impose authoritarian socialism on a free people are people who hate this country and should get the hell out. Period.

Oh and calling people racists and Nazis are conversation stoppers as well. You just dont care so long as its your side stopping the conversation.

There is absolutely no reason to argue that "leave' shouldnt be one of the options. If you hate it here, leave. Nothing wrong with saying that whether you are discussing a party you are at or the country you happen to live in.

Yes there is a lot wrong with saying 'leave' to a US citizen. That's pure ignorance of the whole reason why we're a democratic republic.

It is insulting and non constructive.

Love it, or work to turn it into Brazil is what I say! And anybody who doesn't want a dysfunctional Latin American clown-state of a country, is getting a punch to the nose! Back in my day!....

Completely false. There is nothing wrong with suggesting to America haters that they leave the US. Nothing.

To enlarge on what brought this about it, we'd been hanging out for weeks on end because I'd run across him in the courtyard where he'd be playing dominoes with his other buddies. Wife was in the hospital for a long stretch and I'd wander out there when she was sleeping.
He's quite the character, Vietnam Vet.
He's NOT even remotely a liberal by any stretch.
In fact I have to take a lot of crap from him because I am one but it's all good. :)

And it just came up...
"So what you're saying is love it or leave it?"

He said Hell no, get off your ass and do something about it if you don't like it, "I hate those love it or leave it assholes."
That's pretty much the gist of it.

Later he said something to the effect of there's always some drunk **** know it all who stands up and says "if you don't like it here you can leave" and that's when I used to walk up and knock em out.

"It's a bullying tactic."

"Yeah, and they usually don't have anything to back it up, and down they go." (laughter)

It's not like it was a deep political conversation, just guys sitting around playing dominoes and talking smack.

Who cares? The 1st Amendment says someone can tell another to leave the country if they don't like it. That is protected speech.

What you are claiming is totally subjective. Under your suggestion, I could claim using "jingoistic" is a form of intimidation and seek to silence you.

Resist the urge to respond to things emotionally, and consider the impact of "slippery slopes".

It seems there is a significant portion of the population that is failing to understand that concept.
