I believe it was the sum of a fair few issues rather than any one in particular. Yes, the economy was one. Other stuff included their pushing through of major social changes without bothering to try and persuade people, Bill Clinton's signing of free trade agreements that aided deindustrialisation, the drug crisis, arrogant and sometimes bigoted assumptions about voting patterns, the tendency to dismiss out of hand any criticism of their campaign, alienation of the Sanders wing, Hillary's multiple skeletons in the closet, disillusionment over Obama's inability to live up to some of his promises, the Supreme Court vacancy, etc.
I think what is far more interesting is all the winning trump is bringing to the country /s
Swing voters in the swing states that voted for Obama twice switched to Trump in 16'. Why? One, the Obama economy was abysmal. You disagree? Fine. Then why did all those voters in the midwest and Florida vote for Trump instead of Hillary IF, as you allege, the economy was just humming along just fine? Two, Trump promised (and has delivered) on putting Americans FIRST, instead of LAST, for a change.
The Democratic Party used to be known as the party for the average working American. That is no longer the case.
I see you don't want to speak to the topic of the thread.

Trump is very good at fooling idiots.

...the real challenge of this century is what to do with large numbers of people who are simply not needed to be producers in this new economy.
First of all, the economy in 2016 was good by almost all measures.
Your attitude sucks. Needs adjusting.
Implementing an immigration system that takes into consideration what is best for the average AMERICAN is a good start and Trump is doing the right thing there! Having an unlimited pool of no-skill immigrants to compete against Americans and that drive down wages is BAD for the average American.
Apparently, a sufficient number of swing voters in swing states didn't see it that way.
Its rather stupid to talk about the loser. Lets talk about the winner and how our country is doing.
The opinion of those swing voters does not change the reality of a strong economy by almost every measure.
No, it just changes who lives in the White House.
Can you provide examples of jobs immigrants are taking from native born Americans?
And you're a "centrist"?
