I would like to hear some opinions. That way we can even have debates on this subject.

What is worse, to be put to death for a crime you didnt commit, or to spend your life in prison for a crime you didnt commit?

Looking forward to the spectrum of awnsers...

I think being sentenced to death for a crime you didn't commit.

If you're in prison you'll always have the chance/opportunity to appeal the sentence, or even escape.. you can't really do anything if you're dead =p

They way life in prison is today, with anyway acceptable living conditions, I would have chosen life in prison.

But just one thing pucci, you said that there always is a chance that you will be free once again.. Now the definition of "lifetime" can vary a lot from country to country, but if we say that lifetime in fact is the actual definition of the term - the rest of your life... Then that chance isn't that very big. Under these surcomstances I wouldn't have relied on hope, day out and day in. What psykological probs wouldn't that cause??

It sure can vary, and it does.. in some countries life is only like 15 years, and you usually get out in 10 or so, because of good behaviour.. then there's real life, which is your whole life, and I know the chances aren't very high to get out, but some ppl manage too anyways..
If you get life without parole in like a maximum-security prison, then you're kinda screwed tbh ;)

but I'd still choose life instead of death..

Which is far from the punishment i would like to have for criminals, but anyway... that's a diffrent story.

Life is short, and i wouldn't like to live my entire life locked in a cell, we are all going to die one day anyway... so maybe the death penalty would to be prefered in the cases where you get "parole in like a maximum-security prison."

I would rather spend my life in prison than be put to death for a crime I didn't do, I think. But it's a hard question. But if I only needed to think of myself, I think I would go to prison. I think you can get more from your life that way, even if it costs money and money who could have been spent another way are spent on you because the society is lazy and put you to prison for something you didn't do.

I don't think death penalty will solve any problems, not in the big picture. Not really putting people into prison either, except the ones who go around killing and raping people are locked up.

People will always do bad things, because that's how this world works, as long we keep on letting them do it and then punishing them.

The questions shouldn't be HOW to punish them, the question should be what should we do to make people not to commit crimes? I know this is a hard question and that probably most people thinks that it will never work out that way. But keep on killing people and putting them into prison will not make the world better and safer. Death Penaly doesn't erase evil from the world, if you kill someone who has done something wrong she or he is not gonna do it again, but the reason that made she or he do it will not be killed to.

Death Penalty is not a good way of punishing, it won't solve any problems in the big picture!

I think its worse to get a deat penalty then get life in prison, couse u can appeal the sentence or maby get probation. If u get life time u still can fight to prove u´r innocence, but when u´r dead u can´t :p

Doesn't matter. Either way, I'll either die fighting-- to avoid my sentence-- or I'll die in prison.

Fourteen years or forty, they would have taken my life from me.

So the general concensous here is unwarented death is a worse than alternative than unwarented life imprisonment???

What is the difference when court appointed punishment comes into action???

And yes, i might have set this up a bit expecting this response. But the reason is because i want to obtain a point of view that is in some sense abstract.

It more of an experiment of logic.

Why do you insist on being a troll?

Who's being a troll? That was an honest question. You created this experiment of logic, separating the simple question of life or death away from the court system, and got your answers; then you said this:

You asked "what is the difference when court appointed punishment comes into action?" I honestly don't understand what the results of your experiment prove: are you saying that we should have the death penalty because it's the more severe punishment? Or are you saying we shouldn't have the death penalty because it's too cruel?

Which side are you on? And if you're on neither side, why bring up the courts?

If you are sentenced to death your punishment will be over quickly. A death sentence is intensive, and then you get it over with fast. A felony that leads to being imprisoned for your whole life would be worse if you would have no opportunity to escape or being freed in the future because then there is no point of living. But because you know you have not committed the crime it would be better to be imprisoned as you would always keep your hope up and wait for the day when they will free you of all charges. Even though you would not be freed in the future it would still be better to be imprisoned because you would always keep your hope up, that one day you will be free. If you would have any hope left of course it would be better to be sentenced to death penalty, the only thing that keeps us alive is our hope.

Does he have to pick a side? Wasn't the point just to get some views on what people would have wanted for themselfs if something like that would happen? Maybe the death penalty isn't that cruel as everyone seem to point at, since some people might choose that instead of a long life in prison... So far, the answer has been life in prison, so do we have the right to execute others? (don't think that it's different cause the person did something truly horrible...I assume that you won't get these punishments for nothing - so you would have done the same...?)

Quite interesting thing about this question though - you eliminate the vengeance debate of the deathpenatly...

Sure, he can get the views, but he seemed to use them to make a point, and I didn't understand his point. So I asked. If he doesn't want to clarify, he doesn't have to, but I'm certainly going to ask him to.

I'll ask you, too: so people would rather stay alive than die. Does that meanb the death penalty is too cruel? Or does it mean it is exactly what the worst criminals deserve? Choose whichever side you want, but if you want to make a point about the issue, you need a side to make the point for.

And I also have to ask you this: how does asking people what they would want for themselves eliminate the vengeance debate?

I dont know for 100% his opinion, but from my point of view, it seems he is in support of the death penalty. I think what he is saying is that majority of the people had chose they would rather spend life in prision, the death penalty would be more just (or somethin). I dont know if that makes sense or not, but if I was betting, id put it all on "for".

Ofc, and I never said you shouldn't do that.

The question although, was if you would have wanted the death penalty or lifetime in prison. I believe i have answered that - Life time in prison, as you say i would rather live than die. And, maybe not that surprising, I am 100 % against the death penalty. Ofc these people might "deserve" to die, and killing them would be an ultimate way of preventing them from comitting the crime again. However, there are other ways of achieving this, such as lifetime in prison...

An eye for an eye just doesn't give any positive results that other ways couldn't.

Well, what i meant with that was: when you debate the death penalty you often get "what that person has done to the victim and his/her family is unforgivable... the person deserve to die.." and that sort of things. But when Assuming You where the criminal and it's your own life that where at stake, (and also it's a more a practical question?) At least i didn't thought of any of those things...

For example a murder. Abviously it's tragic and the family will have to live with this for the rest of their life, but doing the same thing to the murderer... What will you have achieved exept just killing the murderer?

:doh

Thank you for clarifying; I see your point now. You're right, it's much harder for a pro-death penalty person to get outraged by the horrible crime if they think of themselves as the one accused.

I agree with you on the death penalty; I think it solves nothing, helps nothing, and causes new problems that don't come from life imprisonment. I think it should simply be eliminated. But then, I've always thought that.

Goldenboy you should be happy that the psycho from the movie "SAW" doesn't read this forum, you know.. the guy talking about appreciating life in all forms and stuff ;)

In my opinion, it's way worse to be executed for a crime you haven't committed then to live in prison the rest of your life because of it. As long as you're alive, there are things to find happiness in, things to laugh at, things to enjoy, and things to love. Even if you for instance have to live with everyone thinking you're a murder.

Dying is the worse that could ever happen to a person that isn't EXTREMELY ill or really really suffer from anything else. That's my opinion! And this is how I believe everyone should be thinking!..It could actually make you happier as a person in general. Bye bye!:2wave:

By the way; in this case you still have hope for freedom if you're in prison. You have a chance to apeal the judgment or even escape. If you're dead, there's nothing you could really do! Bye :2wave:

Depends on the prison.

A death sentence means nothing when you can bury the State in paperwork and appeals for years on end until you die of natural causes in prison which is usually what ends up happening. In other words, they're the same sentence so neither is worse than the other.

Given the two options, I'd choose death. I'd never want to spend the rest of my life in prison.

Of course, now I expect a bunch of fanatics to tell me they know what I'd do better than I do.
