I opened up my Facebook page this evening and staring me in the face was a photograph of a young calf being tortured with electricity (I think). I flipped off of it so fast, I'm not sure.

This was posted by a friend of mine who lives out of state that I see every few years and talk to a couple times a year. Her post said, "Isn't this awful?"

Well, YES, you dumb ****, it's awful. Why did you think you had to post it on Facebook for all of your friends to see? They can't do a damned thing about it.

There are ways to make a difference. I know. I do some of them. I've adopted animals into my home, rescued strays, feed strays, feed raccoons, take injured wild things to the vet to save their little lives and turn them loose, paid to treat a stray dog that got hit by a car and found it a new and happy home, donate to the ASPCA every month and our Chicagoland no-kill shelter on a regular basis.

Posting a damned ugly pornographic image on Facebook that will haunt people for weeks does . . . wait for it . . . absolutely NOTHING.

Why, for the love of God!!! do people do this??

I have several animal rights women on my FB. They post way too many gross photos.

I'm embarrassed to say this but I've used horrifying photos of dead cats in 55 gallon drums during my war with the local pound. So it's a way of slapping people and waking them up to the incredible cruelty we show to our companion animals. I've toned it down in the last couple of years and my website no longer has the horror photos.

So, maybe I did the wrong thing and I won't do it again. But please know that my motives were (rightly or wrongly) to wake people up to the slaughter machine that operates in Las Vegas.

The problem all began with "I opened my Facebook". If you avoid doing that you'll save yourself all kinds of problems.

Photos like that haunt me for days and days, Specklebang. I know it goes on. My heart breaks for them.

I learned a long time ago that I can only do what I can do. And that my 'circle of influence' is my comfort zone. I cannot afford (for my own peace of mind) to look at images of suffering about which I can do nothing.

I suspect you yourself DO something besides just post photos. My friend? I doubt it, though I'm not sure. And when you say "my website," I don't know if you're talking about Facebook. I enjoy Facebook. It's fun to reach out and touch people one rarely sees....support them when they're down...comfort them if they have sorrows...celebrate their joys.

Call me to action with a paragraph. Give me a link so I can express my horror at a company's inhumane practices -- ask me to write a letter to the editor of my major newspaper. I'll do it! I'll do whatever someone asks me to do to support their causes. Hell, sometimes I even email companies about injustices I read on here. Just today -- I emailed the bank that wouldn't pay the lady $18K for the furniture they basically STOLE from her because they "repossessed the wrong house."

But don't show me photographs that will haunt me for days. Jesus

True that. I'm going to give it some serious thought. I was going to immediately delete her, but Tommy talked me into waiting a few days.

Those compilation videos showing a variety of animals being harmed and tortured by sick ****s stick with me long after viewing. I know if I was POTUS, I'd do everything in my considerable power to help animals and make the lives of people who torment animals hell.

I honestly don't surround myself with anybody who's a militant anything. I just don't, because it gets on my nerves. I have 3 daughters and a grumpy retiree for a husband. I have enough to get on my nerves. If anybody starts posting stuff like that, I delete them, and do it quick. I don't make a big deal about it. I just click one button and they're gone. If they ask me later on, why I deleted them, I tell them.

My facebook is actually quite pleasant as a result.

Society has become obsessed with the emotion of guilt, including being overly concerned about people being offended. On a daily basis, you can't avoid things from tip jars in the most ridiculous places, those commercials with injured animals and sad music as they request money, to people being inanely sympathetic for a punk like Trayvon Martin. The list goes on and on.

This is my website. Certified as safely free of disturbing images. MANY SPLENDID CATS - Advocacy For Exceptional Cats In Imminent Danger

I also provide a house and car to "The Cat Ladies" who have 25 cats and I also support HOMEWARD BOUND CATS who has about 100 cats. I also have a number of adopted cats that I call my extended cat family as well as my own 3 little sabre-tooth's.

I'm not the hell-raiser I used to be. I'll be hitting the big seven-oh in the next 2 weeks. I nap just like the cats these days:):kitty:.

Speckle!!! That web site is awesome. And it tells me what to do if I can help. Just exactly what I'd wish others would do. Good for you, my friend. And....because I'm terrible remembering birthdays...please accept my early birthday wishes!!!!! Happy Birthday, Specklebang. You do angel's work. *hugs*

I may just do that. One.More.Time. I had a Status Post all set to hit enter on that was a "general post" but this friend could not have missed it was meant for her. I ripped her a new one. I kept telling myself, "Do not hit enter. Do not hit enter." And I didn't. Deleted it and promised myself I would revisit it when I'd cooled down.

Typing this post -- as well as everyone's response -- helped a great deal.

Thank you!!!!

Your a kind hearted person, Maggie. My wife does the same. Today she took a little kitten that had been dumped to the vet for the 2rd time. It's doing perfect. For 3 weeks we kept hearing a kitten cry at night for a while, but couldn't find it. The voice kept getting softer and scratchery. Crying for it's momma. Managed over a few days to cox it in being so desperate for food. What we saw was pitiful. Maybe 6 weeks, meaning dumped at 3 weeks. Skin and bones, except a huge stomach - meaning worms. So weak, it fell down trying to scratch at her.

No fight during the immediately flea bath. A dose of good dewormer (to the vet the next day), some high quality food, and just held it. And in a voice you could barely hear, that little kitten curled in her hands and told the sad tale of scary, abandoned life to her.The vet said at the most he was 6 weeks old, not sure if he could make it or not. Many an hour for the next couple days her and I held that desperate little creature.

He needed a momma, which was to become her female mini Pom lap dog. Other older rescue cats (ones she couldn't find homes for) wanted nothing to do with him.

2 weeks later? He's (the kitten) is just fine. Stomach gone, doubled in weight. Following and playing with the Pom like his Mom and best friend. But he acts almost as much like a dog as a cat - being his Momma is a little dog. My wife has rescued more animals than she could count, and finds nearly all good homes. The rest she keeps. That means older, or not cute etc. But while she already has offers of a good home, she's going to keep this little guy.

How can someone dump probably a whole litter of 3 week old kittens along side the road in the woods? He probably the only survivor. While I don't care for PETA crazies, a person who abuses animals is scum. And it tells a lot about a person who has compassion for desperate little creatures - although knowing it only a tiny fraction of them. Doing what we can - 1 at a time.

I don't have a Facebook page nor does my wife. She did years ago and it caused her a lot of problems.

I consider people like you, your wife, Specklebang and many others on this website to be angels walking when it comes to helping animals. It's deeds. Not pictures. *hugs* I think you'll have a very interesting kitty-kat, being as he probably imprinted on your pup. Ha!

i hate this stuff so much that i spammed all of my FB friends with pics of happy baby bunnies for one month, and i explained that i was doing it to counteract the ugly animal torture pics which do nothing to prevent animal torture. i called my one man movement "baby bunnies for world peace," and i haven't seen a single animal torture pic since.

Oh, Helix, I'm so glad to hear that others dislike these photos as much as I -- this thread has really wrung the anger and depression right out of me. I'm glad I posted to hear from others.

I may just do that -- the bunny spam. Ha! It's sure a helluva lot kinder than the Status Post I almost made targeting my friend. Lordy.

Facebook is one of those things I will never "get"

Well, like I said, it's OK in small doses. I don't understand people who "collect" friends. Before I took my daughter's FB away, she had like 500 friends. She didn't know half of them. I hate reading stuff that doesn't concern me. The only people I have as "friends" now are family members, neighbors that I actually like and real life friends. That way, if they post, "I had a pint of fluid drained from my back," I might actually give a ****.

Well, Maggie, I see the purpose has been accomplished.

You're talking about it.

103 people have viewed this thread, noting this issue. Perhaps some of those people haven't seen anything of the sort, or they did but it was a few years ago and maybe they find th reminder to be disturbing. Out of sight - out of mind. Perhaps one of the people viewing this thread will consider donating to a local shelter at some point, or might help someone who takes in a homeless animal by buying food.

Who knows - domino effect.

Likely - a few people reading this thread will go elsewhere and bring up this exact topic, thus affecting one or two other people in a positive manor.

Get creative with the possibilities, odds are, they'll all come around for someone at some point.

If you don't talk about it, that's one less person who will think about it.

... This thread of your reminded me of the abused cattle-case years back in which a video was taken at a slaughter house of ailing cows being tortured. The attention put the company in bad light, and disturbed people enough to where legal action was taken, and new legislation was passed.

Facebook is one of those things I will never "get"

i'm not a huge fan of it, but it's great when i want to put up a new nature photo. also, it has helped my new acoustic project to get some positive attention. we decided to film music vids of our new tunes right after they were written so that we would remember them, and somebody decided that it would be funny to post them. surprisingly, it has gotten us a bit of exposure with people who might eventually come to our shows or be interested in a record once we get to that point.

there's a signal to noise ratio, though. to get to the real content / interesting stuff, you sometimes have to wade through a lot of stuff that you just don't care about.

I went through the same thing about a week ago....Someone posted a video showing a cop killing a dog....The stupid owner had taken the dog with him to some sort of demonstration and when they arrested him, the dog ran up on them trying to protect his owner...,It was horrible and I was so upset that I couldn't even sleep...That is the second video about cops killing a dog....It just made me sick....

my spamfest was prompted after i opened an anti dogfighting pic by accident during lunch. after that, i dedicated myself to baby bunnies for world peace : i might not be able to stop the horrors in the world, but i can dilute the **** out of them.

plus, it was fun finding and captioning 4,246 pictures of baby bunnies, lol.
