Jack Hays:
The two Russian naval flotillas berthed in San Fransisco and New York in the fall of 1863 might have had some affect on British decision making.
Cheers.

The excuse that "they all did it" does not mean it was not wrong. The culture of corruption pervades Venezuela and supporting yet another military junta is doomed to failure and unspeakable suffering by the masses until it does. Very sad. Not to mention the damage the Putin/Maduro alliance will do to our standing in all of S. America. Not that you bother about that.

Iguanaman:
That same culture of corruption pervades Brazil, Honduras, Argentina and Mexico but the US is not threatening these regimes today because they now have right-wing or centrist governments which will cooperate with American imperial demands.
And Venezuela is not as isolated as you would have us believe with China, India, Russia and Mexico among many other states who have supported its sovereignty. If the US can back an insurrection in Venezuela against an unpopular and deeply corrupt Venezuelan state then how can it legitimately sanction Russia for essentially doing the same thing to Ukraine? It can't.
Cheers.

If Putin tries to build a airbase in Venezuela he will find our next President sanctioning the hell out of him until he withdraws. We will not have a puppet as President forever.
Iguanaman:
The Venezuelan constitution as revised by President Hugo Chavez and ratified by national referendum forbids Venezuela's government from allowing foreign military bases to be established on Venezuelan soil.
Cheers.

Russia has already attacked Ukraine and effectively partitioned the country. A comparable US action in Venezuela would establish a chunk of the country under control of the opposition.
That is easily finessed. Base flies the host country flag and foreign units are tenants.
The geographical space of Venezuela is an area of peace. No foreign military bases or facilities having purposes that are in any way military shall be established within such space by any power or coalition of powers.
Foreign States or other international law subjects shall be permitted to acquire real property only for the quarters of their diplomatic or consular delegations, within such area as may be determined and subject to guarantees of reciprocity, with such limitations as may be established by law. In all such cases, national sovereignty shall remain intact.
Jack Hays:
From Article 13 of Title II of the Venezuelan Constitution found here:
Constitution - Title II: Geographical spaces and political division (Art. 10-18) | Venezuelanalysis.com
Not so easy to finesse I think.
Cheers.
