What do you think? Private education is much more expensive, but has higher quality(or does it?). Public education is cheaper, but has lower quality(or does it?)

Your blanket statement is not correct. I've seen private schools that cost less per student than public schools and turn better results.

It depends what you mean by "cheaper." Private schools generally spend less money per student to get the same results as public schools. The only reason it's more expensive is because the parents have to pay private school tuition AND public school property tax.

We should move to a system of vouchers for any accredited public, parochial, or private school. The competition would help ALL schools improve except for the very worst, and those would be squeezed out of the market entirely.

I completely agree.

But how likely is that to happen?

There are forces who oppose this idea (as there are with everything).

A few I can think of that would not like it:
Teacher Unions.
Some public schools (or at least their officials).
Various politicians.
Various lobbyist groups whose agendas are at odds with this.

Depends. Here in NYC, there are private schools, Public schools, charter schools, and specialized/accelerated public schools

Private Schools Always good, always expensive, very selective.

Charter Schools public schools that are independently run. Always good but many times small and thus selective

Public Schools Open to everyone thus very large. Not run well, and quality of education needs improvement.

Specialized/Accelerated Schools I went to one during high school. Very selective, very rigorous, a tough exam needs to be taken to get in. Basically a private school without the cost.
