Stabilized a tanking economy

Reversed the downward trend of the value of the dollar

Stopped the direly inflating deficit from inflating, and so on.

In these two years, he's done a huge amount more than both Bushes together did in their twelve, and he's just getting started.

I think you may be going a little too far with this. I'd love to pick apart everything but most of it could be chalked up to that simply being an opinion, little of it is even stated in a way as if it were a fact. Others are just purely wrong. We still have 50,000 troops in Iraq, the NASA budget wasn't tripled, and he didn't remove mandatory minimum sentances.

Sorry. :/

I think the key is that it is opinion. I tend to get annoyed at these threads precisely because of that, as what one might see as an accomplishment, another might see as something destructive or maybe trivial.

I'm not singing any 'praises' unless his actions proove to BE helpful, beneficial and good.

Just giving money to different programs =/ good change, progress or advancement.
Passing laws, regulations and bills =/ good change, progress and advancement.

and this
Stopped the direly inflating deficit from inflating, and so on.
Is just a bold faced lie of ignorance.

He's continued the deficit climb - and his recent efforts (healthcare, etc) will explode the deficit in the future directly because of these various legislations and programs.

There's absolutely no effort to curb excessive government borrowing and spending. Merely tanking some expenses here and there does not a deficit reduction make.

He got us out of Iraq

I was kinda' stumped at #1. I must've missed the memo.

Dennis Kucinich:

Who is in charge of our operations in Iraq, now? George Orwell? A war based on lies continues to be a war based on lies. Today, we have a war that is not a war, with combat troops who are not combat troops. In 2003, President Bush said ' Mission Accomplished.' In 2010, the White House says combat operations are over in Iraq, but will leave 50,000 troops, many of whom will inevitably be involved in combat-related activities.

Kenneth Pollack:

Of the roughly 50,000 American military personnel who remain in Iraq, the majority are still combat troops -- they're just named something else. The major units still in Iraq will no longer be called "brigade combat teams" and instead will be called "advisory and assistance brigades." But a rose by any other name is still a rose, and the differences in brigade structure and personnel are minimal. American troops in Iraq will still go into harm's way. They will still accompany Iraqi units on combat missions -- even if only as "advisers." American pilots will still fly combat missions in support of Iraqi ground forces. And American special forces will still face off against Iraqi terrorist groups in high-intensity operations. For that reason, when American troops leave their bases in Iraq, they will still, almost invariably, be in full "battle rattle" and ready for a fight. Pollack's point was proven Sunday when a US soldier was killed near Basra, the first US troop death since the "withdrawal of combat troops" took place.

Top military leaders in both countries acknowledge Iraq still may need help from the US armed forces after 2011. "We're obviously open to that discussion," US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said last week. "But that initiative will have to come from the Iraqis. Iraq's top military officer told AFP last week that American forces may be needed for another decade.

US combat brigades still in Iraq: report | Raw Story

We will always be all up in someone else's country-business-stuff.

Obama fully supports us nosing into various African dramas - read the Democratic Platform - it details what they want to do and where. . . if you think that'll happen without military-involvement you're nuts.

So for those who are against our involvement with Iraq/Afghanistan does this also transfer over to Nigeria and other countries where people are encouraging our action?

Yes, most of these are pure opinion, and many are steeped in deep ignorance.

He followed the Bush plan for pullout from Iraq to the letter, and Bush having achieved victory by a plan Obama opposed, Obama was left with one actual thing to do -- a diplomatic mission of shepherding elections and making sure a stable government was in place by the Aug 2010 pullout date. Neither has happened.

He may have "tripled the NASA budget," but he's also removed its entire reason for existence -- sending Americans into space. He has made NASA into a "climate change" agency with that budget increase and ended the manned space program, canceled our launch vehicles, and now, when the last shuttle mission lands this fall, the United States will no longer be a spacefaring nation. If we want people in space, we have no choice but to rent launch chairs from Russia (and they've already said they plan to gouge us for the privilege. Kennedy's dream, the one we all grew up with, is dead, and Obama killed it. So yeah, that's something to be terribly proud of.

And ending the debt increase trend? That's such an incandescent bundle of stupid I don't even know where to begin.

Obama did EVERY single thing Bush did.
We're not out of Iraq.
He's done nothing but make empty promises.
He's just another typical politician.

What has Barry and the dem Congress accomplished?

Republicans now hold a nine-point lead over Democrats on the Generic Congressional Ballot for the week ending Sunday, August 22, 2010.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 47% of Likely Voters would vote for their district's Republican congressional candidate, while 38% would opt for his or her Democratic opponent.

Generic Congressional Ballot - Rasmussen Reports™

Presaging the looming Republican sweep is the shift in the party ratings on various issues. Rasmussen has the Republicans ahead by 49-37 on the economy and 53-37 on healthcare. His likely-voter poll shows GOP leads on every major issue area: national security (49-37), Iraq (47-39), education (43-30), immigration (47-34), Social Security (48-36) and taxes (52-34).

When Republicans are winning issues like education, healthcare and Social Security — normally solidly Democratic issues — a sweep of unimaginable proportions is in the offing.

I read back over that list - and noticed that there's no 'fixed our unemployment issues' and 'fixed our housing market issues' and so on.
His efforts to deal with these problems were pointless and just more bureaucratic mess with no results.

And these issues *are not* "just because of the republican party" . . . the housing market crashing, for example, stems to various programs which were liberal in origin - and not from *one* four year span of presidency, but peppered out over the years. But it also stems to social and other issues that aren't related to politics at all - but just life.

I'm not saying, either, that the Republican party didn't play it's part - but in an effort to paint Obama good people seem they need to run opposition into the ground . .. in order to paint the opposition good they need to run the president into the ground - it's a stupid trend - because we all know that Government is a combined mess, not *just* one party or the other. . . and we all know that the aftermath of their decisions spreads out over year before we see the true stupidity of it.

We won't feel the deficit pinch of AACHA (whatever the acronym is) for another 20 years - by that time people would have kind of forgotten.

Except for me. This forum better be here because you'll hear all about it!

In reading over the list I see a lot of opinion there that is misguided and absolutely incorrect. It is ok to have an opininon because everyone has one but to be accurate you have to back that opinion up with actual facts.

I agree with you that Republicans had something to do with the mess we have today and that is why I have stated that many need to be booted out along with the Democrats that created this mess. Democrats have been in control of the Congress since January 2007 yet that is a fact that many here ignore. GW Bush couldn't get a thing through Congress and it does seem that the Democrats were more interested in regaining the WH than they were in doing their job keeping our economy moving forward.

The constant blame game of Bush has gone on too long especially by people who refuse to do the research to verify the anti Bush rhetoric. GW Bush wasn't perfect but he also isn't the anti-Christ. There are some very good research material available to check out the Bush record, i.e. tax cuts increasing govt. revenue can be found on the U.S. Treasury Website or at the IRS at the following:

RealClearMarkets - The Hidden Truth About the Bush Tax Increases

Job creation can be found at BLS.gov and will show that Barack Obama has lost jobs every month of 2010 and Bush was nowhere to be found this year.

I could go on and address every opinion stated and do so with actual facts. Doubt that will matter though to many who never will let facts get in the way of their personal opinions. The only facts that really matter today are 16 million Americans unemployed, an increase of 4 million since he took office, and 3 trillion added to the debt. Until those are addressed it doesn't matter what some people think because the results trump the rhetoric.

I read back over that list - and noticed that there's no 'fixed our unemployment issues' and 'fixed our housing market issues' and so on.

Plunge in Home Sales Stokes Economy Fears
AUGUST 25, 2010
By SUDEEP REDDY And NICK TIMIRAOS

U.S. home sales plummeted in July to a level not seen in more than a decade, spurring fears of renewed weakness in housing prices and the broader economy. Sales of previously owned homes fell 27.2% from June to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.83 million, the National Association of Realtors said Tuesday, the lowest level since the industry group started its tally in 1999.

The number of unsold homes on the market grew by 2.5% to nearly four million in July. At the current sales pace, it would take 12.5 months to clear that inventory, the highest level in more than a decade.

WASHINGTON — New requests for unemployment benefits fell sharply last week, the first decline in a month and a hopeful sign after a raft of negative economic reports.
New claims for jobless aid dropped by 31,000 to a seasonally adjusted 473,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. Still, claims remain much higher than they would be in a healthy economy. Employers are reluctant to hire as economic growth appears to be slowing.
The drop comes after a steep rise the previous three weeks that sent claims to their highest level in nine months. Those increases raised fears that businesses were starting to layoff more workers.
Even with last week's decline, the four-week average, a less volatile measure, rose to 486,750, the most since November 2009.

Also, from same article;

Separately, the Mortgage Bankers Association said that one in 10 American households with a mortgage was at risk of foreclosure this summer.

The number of Americans missing mortgage payments and falling into foreclosure has followed the upward trend in unemployment, which has been near double digits all year and has shown no sign of dropping soon.

Also, from same article;

Congratulations, how many of those dropped out of the labor force? Let us all know when the 16 million unemployed Americans get back to work and when the unemployment number will improve?

From BLS, please notice 2010 numbers vs. 2009. Looks like every month of 2010 is worse than 2009 and you hired Obama to "clean up the Bush mess"

You don't cure cancer over night.

What has Presendent Obama accompished.......hmmmm

He's managed to divide the countries in ways I never thought possible.
Rich against poor
Black against white
Mexicans against white
Liberals against conservatives
Muslims against the American people
left media against right media
States against the federal Gov.
Arizona against other states
Congress against the people
Rep against Dem

I know these thing existed before but not to this extent.
He has us in a state of chaos and uncertainty.
I guess you could call that an accomplishment if that is his goal.

Or Rome wasn't built in a day. Either one works. ;)

After spending over a trillion dollars shouldn't we have better results? After all Obama was in the same Congress that created this mess. How do you explain unemployment going up after spending all that money?

He got us out of Iraq

by following the Bush plan

Saved us from a nightmare depression brought on by irresponsible Republican practice

by making it worse

Made massive and long needed investments in research and school funding

such as studying the incredible roles that could be played in the future by robot bees

Has reversed the debt increase trend

is the person who wrote this insane? trillion dollar increases in the debt year by year from here on out?

Fixed the hilarious crack disparity

this i have no idea what it is.

Made massive investments in alternative energy

which will lose lots of jobs and waste lots of money and do lots of damage to our environment and our poor. see: Spain

Has moved us back towards cap and trade environmental limits

which they have given up on in the Senate because it is such an obvious jobs-destroyer that there is just no way it could gain even the Democrats support

Has made significant improvements to border security

where? and don't give me the "oh he's made more raids" or something like that; i want to see numbers of criminal activities and lawlessness going down. i would also like to know how keeping states from protecting their own citizenry by enforcing the law is 'securing the border'. making the border safe for illegals is not "border security"

Set up several public information resources of significant value

like what.

Has made large (despite republican tantrums) strides towards national health care

that is definitely an accomplishment. unfortunately it's going to make health insurance far more expensive, disproportionately harm our young and poor, drastically reduce the amount of health resources available to our seniors and the sickest amongst us, and drive us deep, deep, deep further into debt along the route; aside from the wonderful scary new precedent that the federal government is now authorized to force you to buy something For The Collective Good.

Has gotten most of the contracts and influence database online (which will massively reduce corruption through exposure,

really. the Obama administration has made quite a habit of refusing freedom of information requests and even the lap-dog-loyal press corps is complaining about how opaque they are. i'd like to see some more instances of all this openness.

Has capped interest spikes on payday loans which were crippling the poor

and pushed them instead to unregulated loan sharks who will cripple them physically instead of financially

Made immense financial regulations to prevent another real estate meltdown and also separately to prevent that level of over-leveraging from returning

ah. that must be why we're pouring money into freddie and fannie in order to re-inflate the housing bubble?

Has driven through the advanced manufacturing fund to help close the gap between US and Jap/Euro manufacturing automation

because if there is one thing history has proven again and again it's that manufacturing never takes off so well and grows so fast as when government directs it

Added the justification clause for tax changes

i'd like to see this explained?

Is about to end the nightmarishly stupid Bush tax cuts

which will have the merely i-thought-i-heard-a-bump-downstairs effect of sending the economy into another nosedive early next year.

Introduced the credit card bill of rights to end the Wyoming loophole which many believe triggered the real estate crisis

 many who?

Is about to establish broadband as a basic right (the way we did with electrifaction back in the day, which is _huge_ for rural areas)

yes, because if there is one thing the Founding Fathers gave their lives for, it's to have a Federal Government that is big and intrusive enough that it considers one of it's holiest duties (a 'right', no less!) the provision of the capability for online chatrooms to every cabin in America

Has made huge capital availability for small businesses and minorities

by sucking it all up through massive deficit spending and giving it to his buddies in congress to spend on pork projects.

Extended the 2007 AMT for the small businesses that needed the alternative minimum tax

which puts him on line with every other administration for the past.... what? 20 years? if this is a major accomplishment, then so is pardoning a turkey on thanksgiving

Closed the pre-existing condition loophole once and for all

which will have all kinds of horrendous effects on the availability and cost of health insurance and health care. sort of like healing a bullet wound to the calf by cutting off the leg at the knee

Required employers to contribute to the national health plan to take away the non-insuring disincentive

 and yet employers continue to announce that the incentives are structured in such a way as to require them to reduce the coverage they offer or refuse to offer it alltogether. the math is very simple on this one; spend 8% paying a fine, or spend 15% paying for health insurance.

Expanded eligibility for things like Medicaid and SCHIP

which is a bad thing.

Forced disclosure and set minimums on insurer payout

again, which has all kinds of negative consequences.

Allowed Medicare to negotiate drug prices

which will at least over time help destroy medicare. but i'll put this up against his gutting of the real price negotiation portion of Medicare (medicare D) any day of the week.

Fully funded the VA for the first time since 1956

bush dramatically increased VA spending, i'd like to see some justification for this

Reinstated 100k federal employees

who are making way more than their civilian counterparts and whose pension plans spell future higher taxes and lower growth for the rest of the economy and who are generally unneeded in the middle of a recession. this isn't an accomplishment, this is more-of-the-same, a continuation of a bush era policy of growing the government.

Funded and raised the violence against women act

Shifted funding within the military towards research and away from stockpiling

by (alone, of all the departments) dramatically cutting the military budget including that for research?

Started rebuilding our public image with the one fifth of the human population which worships Allah (that's bigger than China)

HAH!!! people actually believe that?

Took a huge chunk of our nuclear arsenal offline

yup. what a wonderfully intelligent decision that was, too. this way the Iranians will be all embarrassed and stop developing them themselves.....

Funded the National Ignition Facility (which is Earth's best hope for fusion)

Put a huge amount of funding towards helping the remnants of the Soviet Union deal with the nuclear stuff they could no longer afford to control

another continuation of a bush policy

Funded agricultural programs over food disbursals to starving areas

again, bush did this too; how much did bush increase aid to africa, again?

Reopened relations with Cuba

yup. good thing kowtowing to dictators doesn't have any negative consequences in the world, eh?

Created a fund to set aside money for rapid emergency support of emerging democracies

by squashing them, apparently, in favor of Chavez-backed strongmen wannabe's? how about created Democracies out of tyrannies? or was that Bush again?

Undid almost all of Bush's censorship nonsense and is still working on the rest

again, simply not accurate.

Released all of Bush's secret papers

after heavy redaction and careful editing in order to create the political effect desired

Required contracts for new White House staff to exclude corporate influence

a rule that he has repeatedly broken

Set up programs to protect students from predatory lenders

by nationalizing them; a program designed to continue to jack up the cost of education while at the same time ensuring that people who don't need it consume more of it, and that more Americans start their working lives deeper in debt. yeah, really good job on that one.

Restored funding for national parks to Roosevelt era levels

hooray. another unConstitutional function of government restored!

oh wait, another continuation of Bush era policy; Bush being the president who has added the most to the nations' protected areas

Started federal water conservation efforts in the West finally

because they haven't been doing that for the past century.

Set up a national bureau to control wildfires more efficiently

by continuing to back the anti-logging screeds that cause them to blaze across wide area's in the first place

Re-built FEMA

from what? i'm going to need some specifics on this as well

Doubled Pell grants for poor kids who want to go to college

see earlier bit on federalizing student loans

Re-expanded private hunting and fishing rights

if he did that then good on him. but again, i'd like some specifics

Pushed successfully for hate crime legislation to cover acts of homophobia

which is stupid and antithetical to the Rule of Law.

...In these two years, he's done a huge amount more than both Bushes together did in their twelve, and he's just getting started.

Bush II liberated two nations from totalitarian dictatorships and turned them into representative societies (though we're not done with one of them yet). Obama so far has screwed up the economy and continued the Bush policies overseas. he's got far to go.
