Since I already have a thread about Obama, probably the other most important thing to figure out coming out of tonight, is what actions did McCain take that led to him losing? I'm asking about things McCain himself did, as opposed to things Obama did right, or the general environment.

-- Not rip Obama's socialist policies to shreds with vicious tenacity at every given opportunity.

Basically, he just lacked the fire, and personality to get the job done. Palin no doubt brought the fire to the Republican ticket, but it was evidently too little too late.

McCain just wasn't the right man, this time. His party was not behind him. He really never had a chance. I was sorry to see him run again, after what Bush and Rove did to him in their race. And he had to embrace that monster in an effort to win his party's support. Yes, politics sucks.

Everything and nothing. We can pull apart what he did wrong but truthfully I don't think Obama could have been stopped. It's rather pointless to stand in the way of a speeding train.

That can be summed up in four letters:
bush

McCain made the same mistake that Kerry made in 04. Running on a platform of "anyone but Obama".

He didn't focus enough on his ideas IMO, and his VP was used to try and tear apart frivalous things about Obama.

It was how he ran his campaign and his VP pick that did him in.

1) Made the mistake of being born in the 30's instead of the 50's
2) Ran after 8 years of Bush
3) Ran against Obama

I think that a lot of it was the bad taste that Bush left with the electorate.
All similarities in tone between the last GWB campaign and McCain's set off warning bells, reminders of GWB.

1) Appointed terrible leaders to run his campaign.
2) Chose a VP candidate who pandered to rural America rather than suburban America.

The Problem was he was nominated in the Primaries by "moderate" Republicans because he always came across as middle of the road. They didnt want a far-right candidate after the last 8 years of a President appealing to the far-right.

Instead of focusing on those who nominated him, his campaign ran on the premise that it was the far-right Base nominated him instead of the moderates.

Moderates were turned off.

If moderates wanted a far-right candidate, they would've gone with someone else.

I think McCain forgot that. His selection of Palin put the final nail in the coffin.

My opinion.
