It's a hot, sticky humid day. You wake up to an AC on the fritz. The air you breath weighs as heavy as the all the disastrous personal experiences and news of the past few days, then you put this on the turntable and you can't help yourself, you must dance joyously and the heck with brushing your teeth or that first cup of joe as your dog and cat cover their eyes with their paws thinking "crazy person:"

You hear Jerry Garcia's name and you can't help but think "Grateful Dead." Simple word association. However, Jerry was much more. He was an avid listener. And a student of the Charlatans. He convinced a young folk guitarist, Jorma Kaukonen, well based in the blues tradition and often trading licks with Geoff Muldaur in the local coffee house circuit, and convinced him to join a band with this very hot chick singer at the front, armed with songs written by her brother in law, Darby Slick. Jerry upped the tempo, added a few lyrics, refined the sound and musical history was made:




Jerry had done this before and after with Quicksilver Messenger Service, Clear Light, Blue Cheer, Jesse Collins Young, Country Joe and the Fish, Brian Wilson and more than a few emerging "psychedelic" bands. He did so throughout his entire career, spotting talent, putting it to work in new combinations, often without taking or receiving credit, refining their work. He loved the music.

There are a paltry few of us here on DP who are big reggae fans. I have no idea why. But, that's OK.

I've never heard of a reggae concert in Arizona. No matter, I lived in Florida for many years and was fortunate enough to hear great live reggae often. Cap's on Sunday at North Beach (Vilano, if you weren't local) in St. Augustine was feckin awesome every Sunday.

I've been listening to Gregory Issacs tonight.

Shawn Mullins - House Of The Rising Sun (Live)
 
In 1937, Alan Lomax recorded a performance by Georgia Turner, the 16-year-old daughter of a local miner. He called it The Rising Sun Blues. Lomax later recorded a different version sung by Bert Martin and a third sung by Daw Henson, both eastern Kentucky singers. Both can be found in the Lomax Archives at the Smithsonian waiting digitalization. I suspect the song even with the following earlier recordings is much older.
