It does not look like Trump is going to get a "wall" from the Dems. If we are lucky the Dems will offer some fencing or to fix the present walls and Trump can use that tto appease his base. If not what are Trump's choices. If he once again shuts down the Government, he might as well not run in 2020 as the first shut down was not only blamed on him but lost him some of his base support. A second shutdown might just be his doom as he will once again be blamed for the shutdown. The other choice is to declare an emergency which even his GOP supporters in the Senate are telling him not to do. It might be the smarter choice though as it will never go into effect as it will be hung up in court until he leaves office. Can anyone think of another choice?

He has used, and is now using, our military forces to help secure the border including the installation of additional physical barriers. I suspect that, coupled with upgrading existing physical barriers along the border to Great Wall Of Trump specs, will be enough for him to claim that he did as much as possible to better secure the border (calling it a 'win' or campaign promise kept).

Nope. His authority to declare national emergencies has already been adjudicated in the Exec.Branch's favor, and when the anti-Constitution 9th Circus Court decides it know what's best for us all...again, it will be fast tracked to the USSC...and decided in the president's favor, per the Constitution.

When you reject an idea not on its merits but simply because "the other guys" want it, you've lost and America weeps.

Yeah but arbitrarily declaring something an "emergency" that's been going on for decades and will continue many years even if the wall was started today, with the explicit and stated intent of bypassing Congress certainly hasn't been cleared by the courts. You can 100% guarantee a challenge. Why do conservatives hate the Constitution so much?

He could choose to work with Congress and actually come up with a common sense immigration reform plan.

But that involves actually caring about the problem.

Most Americans don't want open borders.

Do you really think congress wants a common sense immigration reform plan. Which would take away a major issue for 2020. If you do try to think back to 2009 when democrats truly controlled the house, senate and presidency. Immigration reform was not on the table then. Illegal immigrants are pawns in the two party fight.

Maybe he could actually act presidential and work with congress instead of threatening them?

Most Americans don't want open borders.

Well yeah, that's not common sense immigration reform to most Americans.

There is also going to have to be big compromises from both parties to get it done so sadly, I don't see any real common sense immigration reform coming anytime soon.

Not paying for Trumps idiotic wall doesn't equate to wanting open borders.

No, I don't think congress really does because they don't really care either. Like you said, it's a good issue and also both sides reap the benefits of illegal immigration.

Not securing the border equates to open borders.

A wall is not the ONLY way to secure a border. So again you are wrong.

What is your idea of "common sense immigration reform". Y'all always say it, but can never explain it.

How should it be done?

There are higher tech solutions for quicker surveillance, permanent military stationed for surveillance (better there than in the middle east) and solving the problem of why they come here in the first place by punishing employers who hire illegals and business crushing fines. So far Republicans and even Trump are not wanting to address the problem of employers hiring illegals.

My dream:

1) One time opportunity to get legal status and work your way to become a citizen. If you have no other legal issues besides no papers you would have up until a specified date in the near future to get legalized.

2) Mandatory e-verify at all levels and heavy fines for anyone caught hiring illegal immigrants.

3) No benefits for any household that cannot prove citizenship or legal status for all members of the household.

4) Secured boarder. No wall.

5) More reform for seasonal immigrants that our farmers need and depend on and people with expired visas. Not quite sure exactly how this can be handled but I am open to ideas.

That's just kind of a start off the top of my head and not really going into too much detail.

And having the skills set to both work with people and come up with a common sense plan. Trump has not demonstrated that he is capable of either one.

If I were advising Trump I would tell him to declare victory on immigration. All he has to do is list the various restriction he has imposed, from the lowest number of refugees to be admitted in history, to restricting paths to citizenship for legal immigrants, to obliquely reminding us that he separated kids from their families -- and his base will be satisfied. He could even take credit for the decline in illegal migration from Mexico, even tho it preceded him. He has street cred with the immigration issue. Time for him to stop being "Johnny One Note" (Johnny Mathis et al.; ask your parents) and move on.

He then could trumpet prosperity and judicial appointments. No one will remember his promises to go after Wall Street.
