Good God...how in the ****ing HELL did democrats get destroyed so badly in a year that Trump lost?
Not only this but Republicans also control state legislatures so they will be gerrymandering the Hell out of districts and with ACB on the SC the maps likely won't be overturned.

This is a disaster, I'd argue this election was worse for democrats than Republicans even with Trump's defeat.

How did this happen and what can we do to stop Republicans from getting a super majority in 2022 since midterms are historically bad for the party of the president in control.

I don't know for sure, but, allowing the GOP to label all dems as socialists and in favor of defunding the police was always gonna leave a mark in more moderate or conservative areas.

The hard left stuff won't play in most of America, and that's just a fact. When more moderate democratic candidates have to spend all of there time fighting off those labels then they will most likely fail. The GOP did a great job in that regard and they generally do.

Whomever thought "defend the police" was a good slogan needs to be drawn and quartered.

It does provide a nice distraction from the main train wreck for people that can no longer deny the results in good faith but require a pick-me-up.

Defend the police sounds fine. The dem bigwigs always equivocated on "defund" the police, and now they're distancing themselves further. That's a good thing.

"Defund" is good because it takes responsibility off police, which is the intention.

For some reason my phone auto corrected defund into defend.

Midterms may go Democrats' way this administration. Assuming the pandemic is mostly mitigated by then, the economy should be coming back with a vengeance, employment should skyrocket, and Democrats may be the ones looking at a supermajority.

Don't underestimate the 2020 rally-round-the-flag effect. Trump should have easily won the 2020 election by a WIDE margin as an incumbent during a national crisis. That he lost is a testament to how poorly Republicans fared. Despite their poor handling of it, the pandemic still got them the normally lucrative "don't shake things up during a national crisis" vote.

The intention is fine. The marketing slogan, like many Democrat slogans, leaves a lot to be desired.

It takes a little thinkin' but pays. I get how the average Joe don't get it, but sometimes it's nice to not lowest common denominator.

The problem is that the least common denominator are easily terrified and the terrified reliably vote red.

"Defund the Police and Reallocate Funds so as to Shift Responsibility to more Specialized Personell, Thereby Freeing the Police to do their primary duties Which are Difficult Enough" was too long. The double-wides can explain it to the single-wides.

Or how about "Retrain the Police?" Or "Demilitarize the Police?" Seems like they'd be less prone to confusion.

Or how about adding a "Too" to "Black Lives Matter?" Not that hard. Or change "Believe Women" to "Take All Allegations Seriously." Not as catchy perhaps, but it avoids the obvious miscommunication that we all have to suffer through day in and day out when debating with Trump supporters who seem to perpetually misinterpret the meaning of carelessly vague liberal slogans.

They could've gone with "Reform the Police".

That's not it. The idea is to let the police focus on their primary jobs. We don't wanna change their primary jobs, we want to remove responsibilities for which they have neither the time nor training. To use reform is to suggest the police were intended to be used as social workers. Police were never intended to be social workers and that crap needs to stop.

Using police as social workers is like using soldiers as police. A bad idea.

And yet it would not have given your political opponents to the opportunity to weaponize the slogan against you. Most can agree that reform is needed. If "defund" can be conflated with "eliminate" or "lower the pay of" and you have to explain in detail what it means in context, then perhaps it is not the best word to use.

I don't have a party and I don't suffer morons. If the nation is run by the inbreds, so be it. Hell, it was for four years. Now you want me to coddle those disgusting animals?

Oh, you mean ELIMINATE the police. Gawd Liberals are so transparent.

Good! Any way to hamstring Joe and the Blowjob is a good thing for America.

Trump was, and always has been, an underdog. Further you don't get a "rally around the flag" effect when almost the entire propaganda apparatus of the media is focused on making sure that doesn't happen.

That he lost is a testament to how poorly Republicans fared. Despite their poor handling of it, the pandemic still got them the normally lucrative "don't shake things up during a national crisis" vote.

I think you missed something in the OP. Republicans didn't fare poorly. They outperformed in every area.

I have to disagree. “Defund the Police” was DOA as a campaign motto; and my house doesn’t have skirts or wheels!

The problem is not those that recognize the low capacity and impaired voter. The problem is supposedly those voters. I say **** 'em.

The ultra ultra woke ultra left went off the deep end and did horribly incompetent messaging, and acted like a bunch of petulant purity ponies, and it turned a lot of moderates off.
I often align with progressive values on a lot of things but the messaging is too hostile for the average voter.
I am not the average voter. I deep dive on issues that average voters do not.

Example of horrible messaging:
"Defund the police"

Camden New Jersey found themselves faced with a department that was largely incorrigible and beyond reform, so they voted to finally disband it altogether and they enlisted the county police to take over, with spectacular results.
They did not get rid of police, they REPLACED their incorrigible department with another police force and reestablished their civilian oversight and control of the new department.
Camden never once uttered the words "Defund the police".
They wanted police REFORM, and they got it.

They could've gone with "Reform the Police".

Reform the police
Rethink police
Retool police
Reboot police
Replace police

Pretty much ANY of the above would have fit the bill.
The problem with Minneapolis isn't unique.
Most of the issues center around the fact that their police union flatly refuses to submit to its civilian oversight and control.

In fact, the president of their police union has not only refused to recognize and accept civilian oversight repeatedly, he has gone over the Chief of Police, the Mayor and the City Council at least a dozen times and has even threatened the Governor.

The fact is, ALL police must accept civilian oversight, most often in the form of a civilian police commission, or the City Council and the Mayor. The job of police is to enforce the law as directed to BY their civilian oversight, it is not their job to decide the laws or decide how to implement policy. Departments serve at the pleasure of civilian oversight, plain and simple.
