Similar situation in California.Phoenix's October heat wave is "unprecedented"
Phoenix is in the throes of an unprecedented heat wave expected to last at least until the end of the week.
Reality check: Our summers have always been hot, but recently they've been feeling longer, too.
The big picture: Sky Harbor recorded 113° on Tuesday — the first time on record we've hit 110° in October.
- National Weather Service Phoenix meteorologist Ted Whittock said the Valley broke more heat records in the summer shoulder season — spring and fall in the past several years.
Between the lines: Research shows climate change is causing heat waves to be more intense, longer-lasting and more frequent.
- Before this year, the latest we'd ever seen 110° was Sept. 19, in 2010.
Stunning stat: The average monthly temperature this September was 94.6°, more than 2 degrees higher than the previous September record set in 2001.
- Studies of specific extreme heat events, such as the deadly 2023 heat wave in the U.S. and Europe, have detected climate change's fingerprints.
- One study last year found record heat in the U.S., Europe and Asia in July would have been "virtually impossible" without climate change.

Nothing good temperature wise, anyway. What are we doing to ourselves?
The yeasayers will say anything whether or not it is scientific.
Specific weather events are not evidence of climate change. Climate change is proved over years and decades of measurements, not by a heat wave.
Don't play dumb. What are they measuring?

Yes, there are peer reviewed papers that claim the Urban Heat Island Effect can make population centers as much as 10C (19F) warmer than the land away from the UHIE.Phoenix's October heat wave is "unprecedented"

One heat wave isn't really indicative of anything. Several record breaking heat waves in rapid succession that can only be cause by human activity is a problem. The yeasayers will say anything whether or not it is scientific.

No bullshit. Just the facts.Usual science deniers will be here soon talking about some bullshit.
That is the side of the IPCC et. al. with the lies. The urban Heat Island Effect is real, yet they wish to blame this on greenhouse gasses. The warming if greenhouse gasses is small compared to the UHIE.We're now living with the consequences and they still propagate their lies.
You sound like a flat earther with such weal rationalizations. When the fossil fuel industry funded science denialism in order to make sure Governments didn't actually move away from Fossil Fuels I don't even think they knew that there would be hordes of imbeciles who would create their own convents of pseudoscientific bullshit and make it basically their whole personality to deny science.
Now you talk like Chicken Little. It's incredible.
But ah well, we had a good run as a species, I know they love to use "alarmism" as a one size fits all hammer to those who sound the alarm but if you look at where we're heading, we're gonna make life pretty difficult on this planet for us to continue in a meaningful way and progress.
Think refugee crisis has been bad this last 10 or so years... Just you wait.
Yet this is an annual press release, wherever we such higher than normal city temperatures. One heat wave isn't really indicative of anything. Several record breaking heat waves in rapid succession that can only be cause by human activity is a problem.
Yeah, it's an annual press release, and it's a bad thing. If the oven has been slowly heating up by a degree a year and recent activity have been steadily and rapidly heating up the oven by 10 degrees and the news have been reporting on it.Yet this is an annual press release, wherever we such higher than normal city temperatures.
The facts are undeniable. The temperatures in cities increase with population and density.
Are you denying the science of the Urban Heat Island Effect?Yeah, it's an annual press release, and it's a bad thing. Are you denying that it is currently 103F in Sells, AZ, which is not an urban area? Are you denying the science of the Urban Heat Island Effect?
The UHIE is not exclusive to what we class as "Urban." The effects are just more prominent as the population and percentage of capped off land increases. How much vegetation loss do you think there is, that no longer provides evaporation cooling? Are you denying that it is currently 103F in Sells, AZ, which is not an urban area?
This is Arizona. The amount of vegetation hasn't changed since 1912.How much vegetation loss do you think there is, that no longer provides evaporation cooling?

How much lower is the water table that also provided less evaporation cooling and it gets lower? We have known for decades that we are pumping out water faster than it replenished.
We are the cause, no doubt. But you guys discount the variables that have the largest effect so you can blame CO2.
Sure it has. At the time, very few people lived there. That's about the time it began as a town. This is Arizona. The amount of vegetation hasn't changed since 1912.
YawnMAGA/people denying climate change better be PRAYING that climate change isn't real and that humans don't contribute to it because if it's real and we contribute then THEIR OWN KIDS/GRANDKIDS/GREAT GRANDKIDS WILL ****ING HATE THEM.
Which they may already do.
Correct. Not sure what your point is. Its population topped out at 2,799, and there are no lawns. Houses, dirt, and scrub.Sure it has. At the time, very few people lived there. That's about the time it began as a town.
Yes we are living in the consequences of no holds barred capitalism, much like the third world has for decades.Usual science deniers will be here soon talking about some bullshit.

Yeah even as far north as Ohio this summer has been pretty unbearable. It's getting too hot for me that's for sure! I'm in the process of packing up a pod and moving back east somewhere to cooler pastures. I'm sick of dripping from heat in mid Oct. This is ridiculous! Don't get me started on the dust overload from the lack of ground cover. Yikes, this place won't last long.
We could just ditch the whole neoliberal project.Usual science deniers will be here soon talking about some bullshit.
