West vs the Rest? Western Values vs All Others?

Marking the passing of the author and political scientist, Samuel Huntington, I take from his 1993 work, "The Clash of Civilizations" this passage to discuss the fundamental premise of US foreign policy, that liberty is universally valued by all.

It seems ridiculous to even debate it but that is why the highlighted sentences are thought provoking.

This is, primarily, a thread to explore what non-Western posters think and feel about Western values.

Do you really feel that the "Western ideas of individualism, liberalism, constitutionalism, human rights, equality, liberty, the rule of law, democracy, free markets, the separation of church and state" are unimportant?

If these are relatively unimportant to you, what values would you rate more highly?

How odd, that by these standards I would not be considered Western-- myself, and so many other Westerners.

Out of that list, I value the rule of law, and to some extent democracy and the separation of church and state. I find the ideas that human beings are naturally equal or naturally free to be laughable, and the attempt to make them so is disastrous. The free market itself is nothing more than a tool, and it should be used for the benefit of society, not vice versa.

I am an American of primarily Western and Northern European descent. Am I not "Western"?

Social order, meritocracy, and progress come to mind, as do family values and duty. Government that works for the benefit of all, rather than either special interest groups or the moneyed elite.

the clash of civilisations thesis is a self fulfilling prophecy
the mro you try to impose something upon someone, the more they will seem to be opposed to it.
