"The latest jobless claims data reflect the smallest number of new filings since March 2020. The four-week moving average for new jobless claims dropped to 299,250, but that is still higher than the 225,500 in place on March 14, 2020 — just before the nationwide economic shutdown forced millions into unemployment."

Good news for families.

A record 4.4 million Americans quit their jobs in September

Must have a lot of independently wealthy people out there.

People are job hopping for much more money. And we business owners are seeing it every day.
Why, if they are qualified for a higher paying job now, they weren't before?

Wages are certainly part of it and some employers are deliberately outbidding others. However, changing jobs could, and often do, involve other factors. Closer to home, work from home options, flexible hours, better benefits. As I said up thread Covid changed people's priorities in ways we may never have imagined.

Employers are having trouble filling those jobs so they are accepting less qualified applicants.

Yes, good points. If they followed up their headline with 'and take other jobs' that would make sense.
Just trying to understand what the heck is going on. Where are all these better jobs coming from? Who had them previously? Why are there so many reports of not being able to find workers?

Locally, there are schools that went back to remote classes because they just don't have bus drivers.

It could be as simple as being the result of so many dying of covid and people retiring, that is opening up the better paying jobs. Leaving entry or low skilled jobs open.
I don't know.
