First, a clear way of gathering these stats. Meticulous stats kept and reported on a Fed website. Why? Because the truth is being hijacked by the race baiter among us. And BLM supporters believe it.

How many armed cops are there nationwide.
How many cops fired their gun at a perpetrator per year.
How many of each race were wounded
How many of each race were killed
How many of each race were unarmed
How many depts have tasers for how many officers
How many tasers were discharged
Can you think of other data?

The people would then be able to access data in one place that would contradict these false stats being bandied around.

Oh, and completely standardize the way stats are reported. Misrepresenting the numbers should be a Federal offense.

So stats might say...

800,000 armed law enforcement in 2016.
11,000 officers fired their weapon at a perpetrator representing 1.7% of LEOs.
yada yada yada You get the picture

No more misrepresentation of stats by the Sharptons, Jacksons, and politicians who shall remain nameless.

We can't fix a problem until we quantify it. IF there's a problem.

Stats don't always fix a problem and can often make things seem worse.
Depends on the people disseminating the figures and how they're presenting them.

Example, the gender wage gap.

Yes:
How many of the cops that fired their weapon were white, black, brown, yellow or red.

Good idea. And make it easy to break down by jurisdiction. Not all police departments have these problems and it would nice to be able to point toward them as positive examples.

Yes, we need this desperately IMO.

But right now the current reporting program is voluntary, and the departments are often refusing to comply!

Do you think Chicago PD would ever voluntarily comply?

(actually, now that they're under serious fed investigation - they may)

I'd think that political pressure would bring Chicago and others into compliance. A footnote to the stats saying, Chicago, Detroit, New York City, etc refused to comply could be painful from a politics
Standpoint.

I would support seeing accurate stats on all that you mentioned. In addition, I would like to see some research done on just who it is that becomes a cop in the first place and if - as some suspect - they are not exactly your average bear in terms of being authoritarian types who insist on being obeyed and take no crap if someday gives them grief.

We can't fix a problem until we quantify it. IF there's a problem.

Problems with most federal stats include 1) they are really nothing more than a (subset of?) state and/or local stats (heavily edited?) later provided to the federal number manipulators, 2) like crime statistics, they vastly dilute very high crime areas (the hoods?) with surrounding much lower crime surrounding areas and 3) we have this "federal oversight" now for public K-12 schools yet we all know that did not get rid of "bad" schools but at significant added cost to acheive that (lack of?) progress.

Justice must be limited to a careful review of each individual "civil rights" case wholey on its own evidence (merits?) - what Fred did (or did not do) in case A should not affect how we treat Joe in case B. We must take care to avoid the use of statistics to assume that any given case is more or less likely to be the result of police brutality or racially motivated bias.

Protesting perceived wrongs committed by police in MN, NY, MD, MO or LA by taunting (blaming?) the police in Dallas, TX makes no sense at all.

I'm not sure how you could maintain accurate aggregation of the data (particularly if you will rely on departments to self-report), but if there is a way to gather these stats reliably, they need to be done. We need to know the actual statistics and numbers so that we are better able to control and regulate the system.
