U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is becoming a member of a key House committee that Democrats will use to conduct oversight of President Donald Trump and his administration.

In a statement, Wasserman Schultz said she would “demand swift accountability from this White House. ... The long neglect of meaningful House oversight on our nation’s most serious problems in recent years ends now with Democrats serving in the majority in the House.”

Regardless of whom the Dems have testify, so long as they don't put up with:

• witnesses simply refusing to answer because the witness thinks the Congress doesn't need to know the answer, and
• witnesses not directly answering the question asked,

I'm good.

Were I a committee chairman, had a witness pulled a stunt like that, I'd have charged witnesses who did such things with contempt of Congress and had them tossed into some sort of jail, be it one the executive branch manages or Congress' little jail in the basement of the Capitol.

I don't care what side of the aisle a member of Congress is on. If the member asks a question, a witness needs to respond with a direct, complete and wholly truthful (fact and context) answer. Period. Witnesses must do so because members of Congress represent the people of the US. Theirs are the people's, the polity's, the citizenry's question and absolutely nobody -- and most especially not government officials and individuals who work with, for and on the behalf of government officials -- has any right to withhold information from the people of the United States. I'm sorry, but one man/woman does not get to say to 325M people, "I don't think you need to know that," and neither does one get to lie to 325M people.

Hopefully, the Dems will return the committee to being an committee that exercises Congress' oversight duty. During Gowdy's tenure as its chair, that committee did little other than overlook one apparent transgression after the next.

We should be hopeful that now without the Pro-Kremlin Party in control of the committee democracy may gradually eek back into Government.

I would very much advocate that the Democratic Party "be the change it wishes to see" in doing the work of the people. No more aboutism. No more, "yeah, well, he, she, did it first" attempted justification for doing the wrong thing. Wrong is always wrong no matter who does it. No more "gotcha" politics. Who isn't sick of that?

American democracy will recover much more quickly if Democrats are committed to taking the high road. High ethical standards much be established or reestablished and adhered to. Democrats should encourage the citizens of the United States to expect a more democratic and principled government. The right way isn't always the easy way, but isn't everyone tired of wallowing in mud and garbage?
