Washington Wakes Up to Global Warming

Does the below information and its implication of cooperation between different factions on global warming finally mean we can consider the subject without politics, industry excuses, and religion involved?


President Bush, major industry leaders, and Evangelical leaders have recognized that global warming is a problem that we need to do something about:

"These technologies will help us be better stewards of the environment, and they will help us to confront the serious challenge of global climate change," Bush said in proposing a series of measures to reduce gasoline consumption by 20 percent in 10 years.

Many industry leaders have come to realize that such measures may be more an opportunity than a hindrance. The day before Bush's speech the chief executives of 10 corporations, including Alcoa Inc., BP America Inc., DuPont Co., Caterpillar Inc., General Electric Co. and Duke Energy Corp., called for mandatory limits on greenhouse gas emissions.

And a week before the State of the Union address a dozen evangelicals called action against global warming a "moral imperative" in a joint statement with scientists from the Centers for Disease Control, NASA, Harvard and other institutions.

I woke up this morning to a cold winter morning......wonder where that global warning was this morning when I froze my butt off walking down the driveway to get my sunday paper? If there is this so called global warning, why couldnt I wear shorts and a tshirt instead of sweats and a hooded jacket?

BTW, many hear about the 79 inches of cold in Alaska this winter?...the most in many years?......they claim the ice caps are melting but Alaska gets over 6 ft of snow.......:roll:

* 79 inches is the snow depth at Whittier, Alaska today. We like to check on that town every day during the winter. Amazing amount of snow. Normal is 44 inches.

not even to say anything about record lows across the country last week............

Cold Dirt, global climate change occurs on AVERAGE across the world, not on a day to day basis. And global warming, if you didn't know, can cause for shorter, more powerful winter seasons, so it is a by-product of it.

I think it's ridiculous that adults in this country would not want to try to lower gas emissions and follow simple steps to lower energy usage, etc, simply because some feel "it may not be happening".

We should be addressing the issue of greenhouse gas emissions as a means of insurance. Do you guys really want to look back to today, 30 years from now, when global warming is negatively affecting everyone's lives and say, "Well that crazy liberal was right, we should have listened". By that time, it may be too late, and it might not affect all of you who oppose the idea of global warming because you might be dead by then, but it will effect your children and their children negatively, so I don't get why we just don't address the issue now.

So then tell us oh enlightened and knowledgeable one. How are humans not causing global warming with all the fossil fuels we burn? Where do all those billions of tons greenhouse gases go? How do they not effect the climate? While your at it, tell me about this:

Clear cut distinction between natural contributions. and anthropogenic contributions. You don't need to go back thousands of years to prove that indeed if natural systems were left the way they are without human input we would not be seeing the actual observational growth in global temps we are indeed seeing.
This graph clearly shows that the model itself remains an accurate representation of how the contributions exhibit on observed recorded data and comes to two unarguable conclusions.
1. Greenhouse gases effect planetary temperature fluctuations.
2. Without anthropogenic contributions of greenhouse gases temperatures should not be rising as they are especially in the past decade.

But if you insist on dwelling on past fluctuations

What we see is a clear cut connection between the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and the level of temperature rise as a function of the concentration.
Not sufficient enough to sway you that greenhouse gases have increased?
Here we have the data showing carbon dioxide concentration variations for the last 400,000 years and see clearly that since the industrial revolution CO2 has risen sharply.
The former natural cycles were the variance between ice ages.

Unconvinced of the relationship between carbon dioxide and temperatures?

For the last 740,000 years, greenhouse gases and global temperatures form a perfect fit.

I have never said that there is not a climate change going on or do I think we should not care about the environment...........what I like to point out is that this so called man made global warning is just a bunch of scientists using a fictitious data to line their pockets with taxpayers money from govt grants.................

if their was no money involved.....this so called man made global warning wouldn't even be a issue...........

I remember the millions of dollars wasted in the 70's from this same environmentalist claiming a new ICE AGE.....now 30 years later after their junk science failed to come true, they are now using Global Warning as their means to get their grubby little hands on and to waste more taxpayers money...........

Well I disagree Cold Dirt. Are you saying that all of these MAJOR oil companies (who, as you know, make money from selling oil), are now saying that we need to put restrictions on emissions because they'll get paid doing so?

Are they now getting handies from the environmentalists too??

I don't think so. And for your information, IF we start funding research from hydrogen fueling, we would all be SAVING money in the long run. So your theory doesn't make much sense.

Your anecdotal information doesn't prove anything. Do you remember the very warm weather in the northeast US earlier this winter? I could use that as an example of global warming, but it would be a silly argument, like yours.

Anyway, the point of this thread is that the Republican President and major industry leaders, along with some religious types, now acknowledge we contribute to global warming. These people generally either ignored or tried to discredit the idea previously.

The President wants us to be "be better stewards of the environment, ...to confront the serious challenge of global climate change." He is now saying its real, we are part of the cause, and we'd better do something about our pollution.
