Venezuela, in other words, is well past the point of worrying that its economy might collapse. It already has. That's the only way to describe an economy that the International Monetary Fund thinks is going to shrink 8 percent and have 720 percent inflation this year. And that's not even the worst of it. No, that's the fact that the state itself is near collapse. Venezuela already has the world's second-highest murder rate, and now the Chavista regime seems to be threatening violence of its own if the opposition succeeds in recalling President Nicolás Maduro. It's a grim race between anarchy and civil war.

Apparently, the government can still afford to import bullets.

Years and years ago I told anyone who would listen that this was going to happen in Venezuela. It was crystal clear when one listened to Hugo Chavez's rhetoric.

The Washington Post thinks that the Venezuelan government is on the brink of collapse outright. The sooner the pain of that is over the better.

Well apparently they are having a recall election for president so it looks like Maduro will fall and be replaced with Caprilles.

The point is, that turning toward socialism will take the country down a road that will ultimately lead to disaster. History has shown this time and time again.

Sanders would run up the federal debt trying to give everyone free stuff from the get go. Same program as Chavez. The only thing we'd be missing is printing all the funny money to remain solvent. Oops, we're already doing that.

If the implacable hostility Bernie has for corporations doesn't result in their nationalization then I don't know why he even bothers to talk about it. And, of course, nationalized corporations will immediately be run into the ground a la Chavez. Same program, same results, Venezuela redux.

Venezuela is not a dictatorship, it is a perfectly functioning democracy, in fact they are going to have a recall election and the opposition is expected to win especially after their landslide victory in the parliamentary elections.

Its a dictatorship under a thin veil of democracy.

The government in place following the Bolivarian Revolution has been frequently accused of corruption, abuse of the economy for personal gain, spreading "Bolivarian propaganda", buying the loyalty of the military, officials involved in drug trade, assisting terrorists, intimidation of the media, and human rights abuses of its citizens.[19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] According to Foreign Policy, Venezuela's corruption helped Hugo Chávez gain power and worsened under the Bolivarian government.[29] Though the Bolivarian government states that they have implemented strict guidelines and laws to deter corruption, enforcement of such anti-corruption laws had been weak following the centralizing powers in the government, creating less accountability for corruption and making it prevalent throughout Venezuela.[1]

Certainly closer to a dictatorship than a democracy.

Chavez was elected president of Venezuela in December 1998 on the strength of three main promises: convening a Constituent Assembly to write a new constitution and improve the state, fighting poverty and social exclusion, and eliminating corruption. Nine years later, it has become evident that the Constituent Assembly primarily was a vehicle to destroy all existing political institutions and replace them with a bureaucracy beholden to his wishes. Poverty and social exclusion remain as prominent as before, while the levels of government corruption are higher than ever.
Chavez managed to appear magnanimous in defeat, but he is not a democrat, and he will keep trying to become president for life in any way he can.
