THE most annoying thing in the post trial commentaries, was African-American "civil rights" spokespersons declaring that Trayvon Martin should be remembered along with other great martyrs of the MLK Jr Civil Rights marches and protests.
That is outrageous and extremely insulting to that great Civil Rights era, all the heros and true martyrs of it, and to African-Americans as a whole.

What the lesson should be to all young African-Americans - and all oung people in general - is to NOT be like Trayvon Martin.

To stay in school and give it all your efforts - instead of being suspended for bad behavior. Stay away from drugs. Do not present yourself publicly online or in dress as a gang-banger. Do not embrace violence but instead embrace peace. To steadfastly work to develop your knowledge, education, skills and good reputation.

Is there even ONE decent parent who hopes their child follows the path Travyon Martin did - even before the shooting? Is there anything, ever, to even hint that TM has the slightest interest in human or civil rights? It is one thing to politely not condemn Martin, it is another to declare him a civil rights hero and the model for young African-Americans to follow.

I think it's more of a symbol to the concept that if you intend to attack a person and gring their head into the cement, expect a bullet in the heart. If that's considered a martyr, I hope he gets a nice monument.

I'd have to say 'unwitting tool for those who claim to be about civil rights'.

And he'll never know this.

the president of the united states said we should honor travyon martin.....really?
I honor soldiers that fought for my freedom, police, fire, and others who protect us.
I do NOT HONOR common thugs that call others "white ass crackers" as assail them
for wondering what no good they are upto. SHAME ON YOUR MR. o'failure you are
so wrong it stinks.

Ive heard this incident compared to Medgar Evers and Emmett Till. It's not even close.

Medgar Evers was flat out assassinated....a bullet in the head for doing nothing but walking from his car to his house.

Emmett Till was accused of sweet talking a white chick. For that "crime" he was taken from his house, beaten shot in the head and dumped in the river.

The Trayvon Martin story is different. We know from the testimony that he is the one who confronted Zimmerman. We know that Zimmerman is the one that ended up getting beaten and the shooting was open and shut self defense.

Trayvon wasn't killed because he was "walking while black". He was killed because he chose to act like a thug. Sadly, the story of Trayvon Martin has more in common with the other thousands of black teenage males killed every year than it does with Emmett Till and until the black community stops getting sucked in by these race baiters like Al Sharpton his death will have been, like all the others, totally in vain.

The Trayvon Martin does give us a "teachable moment". It gives us a reason to teach our kids not to be punks and fools.

That was the reference I was most thinking of in my OP.

I do not know the history of these two cases, but saw on another forum one was a US Veteran and war hero to boot, and comparing that to tm is offensive as all get out.

That was Evers. He was a civil rights leader and, by all accounts, an honest and respectable citizen that all Americans could be proud of.
