In an attempt to defend Trump's tariffs in federal court, Solicitor General D. John Sauer wrote the following

"One year ago, the United States was a dead country, and now, because of the trillions of dollars being paid by countries that have so badly abused us, America is a strong, financially viable, and respected country again."

Do you believe that Sauer is correct, or incorrect, about the US being "dead" last August?

Feel free to post any economic data that supports your vote.

There are no dollars being paid by foreign governments. It is being paid by American corporations and consumers. Does the Trump DOJ think judges are as stupid as Trumpers?

It was severely wounded pre-Trump, but repairable with large, widescale changes and a reckoning across the board. It would have taken an herculean FDR-level effort, but not impossible.

I would say it's dead now, it just doesn't know it. I have never seen so many killing blows done to a First World country in so short a time. We are now in mid-air over the Grand Canyon waiting for gravity to kick in. This excluding the Captain Tripps-level pandemic just around the corner with ZERO defense. Excluding energy and climate policy. Maybe even excluding the impending economic catastrophuck engineered exclusively by Trump's tariffs and tax cuts. The immigration issue alone is a fatal blow. Foreign policy alone is a fatal blow. Every single country (except perhaps Israel) is planning a future where America is no longer the center.

Or as a right-winger would say:

He's not attempting to defend the tariffs, he's putting on a show for the orange MAGAt.

Crazy talk. We were the economic envy of the world.

Now we are the economic laughing stock.

The problem is a lot of people stood to make a lot of money if Trump got reelected. Toward that end, a lot of rhetoric was thrown out there by right wing media and billionaire funded right wing think tanks. They tried to make the claim that the USA was struggling. It was not true at all. Unemployment was low, inflation from the pandemic was cooling off, jobs and investment was plentiful. Crime was low. We were not fighting any wars. We had emerged from the pandemic with a "soft landing," our economy was in better shape than many other nations. Foreign relations were good, there was no trade war. Congress was functioning.

Much of the rhetoric was made up BS. Republicans wanted to take power again. Fox and other right wing media companies stood to make a lot of money because controversy sells, and Trump is the controversy king. They wanted Trump back in and they didn't care what that did to our country or international relations. It has been a disaster since Trump got back in. We're well on our way to a recession. Just look at the dismal jobs report.

I put this in the same category as the people who are saying that Trump is currently destroying our democracy and taking away all our freedoms. Hyperbole with maybe a dose of delusion.

The claim falls flat when you consider that Trump has tariffed countries that we have a trade surplus with.

"One year ago, the United States was a dead country, and now, because of the trillions of dollars being paid by countries that have so badly abused us, America is a strong, financially viable,

This is demonstrably false. To be "financially viable" would require a balanced budget, something Trump is far from delivering.

and respected country again."

International polling, which has been posted on the forum recently including by myself, show that America's global reputation has markedly declined under Trump.

"Trillions of dollars being paid by countries..."
What on earth is wrong with these people? Are they really this stupid or do they just stubbornly cling to the belief that everyone else is?

Point to an instance where another president's Solicitor General had to make a claim in front of a federal court that absurd and delusional.

No other president has had this number of lawsuits filed against their actions in such a short timeframe

Trump's pro-forma is predictible. The old "shotgun approach". If an Appeals Court won't fall for his unconstitutional edicts, the Roberts Supreme Court will bail him out more often than not.

Even if they have to toss stare decisis (precident) out the window. Abortion and curbing court powers to block Trump orders are two recent turnabouts. Birthright citizenship is on the SC chopping block.

I'm no longer sure which is worse..... Donald Trump or the Roberts Supreme Court. Both are doing deep damage to our nation.

So, the US had some kind of miraculous resurection?

I'm just shocked nobody is asking how you died as I'd have thought that some of you might at least be slightly upset by that.

I'd certainly want to know how I died if I suddenly woke up alive again.

To answer the OP Poll question..... NO

Compared to the moribund economy today, it was positively vibrant one year ago.

NO. Its an absurd suggestion.
Other countries are not paying us.
Tariffs are paid by US importers, and are passing their additional costs on to US consumers.
Trump and his cronies repeat these lies because they think US citizens are stupid.
We cannot levy taxes on other countries. There is no mechanism to do that.
WE ARE PAYING THE TARIFFS.

Before trump came back, the US economy was the envy of the world. Trump is mucking it up badly.
