Clare Short is New Labour. People like Michael Meacher are Old Labour. They have ideological differences, though the policies of both Old and New threaten British economic and moral strength anyway.
But one thing they have in common is their nihalism. As a 'pure' New Labour woman, Short sees the world in more stark terms than those who posess more pragmatism.
People like that rather selfishly say "Humph, Labour's not the Labour I myself would have preferred to see. So it's now time to kill the goose that laid the golden egg by staging a revolt against Mr. Blair".
You'll soon get your way m'dear. The Socialists make more of a noise about the 'betrayal' of a more electable, approachable and pragmatic Labour leadership, but a few like Clare Short also have some visions of an old dogmatic utopia themselves.
At this rate you may well have the socialist Labour back again - and parked on the Opposition benches, its natural home.
____________
In the meantime, let's have a nice socialist solidarity sing-song. Let's roll back the years to the days of the Red Front....
Left! Left! Left!
We are sounding the drums
We give our enemy a forceful kick
And what we plant is dynamite
Under the bottom of the bourgeoisie
We threaten the fascists
There on the horizon
Members of the Proleteriat
Re-Arm
Red Front! Red Front!
Left! Left! Left!
We're fighting the police
And we bloody the faces of the ruling class
We are building a better place -
The German Soviet Union!
Ah, brings back memories of the Miners' Strike and Ken Livingstone's glorious GLC tenure!
