I don't think 1069 is trying to excuse Saddam or his actions. In the end I think most of us know that either because of his actions or because of the potential his followers had, or simply because we understand that it's needed for the Iraqi culture that it was about the best way out; it was certainly better than most anyway. I don't at all think 1069 is expressing that Saddam is some kind of "sweet old man."

I think he or she is simply expressing that small piece inside each of us that went, "Jesus..." as we watched the tape, and is outwardly expressing the natural questions that most of us have like, "Was this really the best thing? Did it help? Is this really going to solve anything? Did he really pose such a threat that he had to be killed now that he's in our custody? Why does he look so much like my uncle/father/neighbor?"

Those are natural and right questions, and I despise any person who udnerstands these issues but that doesn't think them.

We all thought it (I hope). All 1069 did was articulate it. I admire the willingness to do so.

I agree with you, although Saddam did deserve what he got. Meanwhile, many of his former supporters, while he was gassing the Kurds, are getting off scot free, like Donald Rumsfeld.
