RICHMOND, Virginia (AP) -- Democrat Mark R. Warner, the former governor of Virginia, has decided not to run for president in 2008, fearing the impact of a drawn-out campaign on his family. "I want to have a real life," he said.

I don't think Warner's ego was big enough to want to do this.

He's a shoe-in for Gov in 2009 if he wants it.

Can't say I blame him, why anyone would want to run for President nowadays, I have no idea...

You and your family will just gonna get slimed and slandered...

It will only hurt for a little while aps.......

The irony is I might even have voted for him depending on who the republicans ran.....

Been there, done that.........Why would he want to be governor again?

That sucks, he was the only candidate the Democrats had who would've been both 1) electable, and 2) a good president. I don't really know who I'd support in the primary now. Of the likely contenders, I guess the best remaining choices are Bill Richardson, Tom Vilsack, Evan Bayh, or Barak Obama.

Hopefully the Republicans nominate someone competent, but I'm not holding my breath. Maybe Mike Bloomberg will run as an independent.

Following Warner's announcement, the leading contenders for the Democratic nomination are:

Hillary Clinton - 48.1% chance of winning the nomination
Al Gore - 17.0%
John Edwards - 13.9%
Barak Obama - 4.6%
(NOTE: These are not polls. They are market-based probabilities, which in my experience are better predictors.)

Al Gore announced a while back that he had no plans to run for President, didn't he?

He is and ego maniac..I would not count him out.......

He would be able to stay in VA as Gov. again. Remember that he stepped down because of VA law, not because he wanted to neccessarily. Warner could also run for John Warner's Senate seat, if John Warner retires.

He announced in 2003 he wouldn't be running in 2004, but I don't think he's ruled it out for 2008. The stock market obviously thinks he's still a contender.

Go Hillary!!!!!

Kerry doesn't stand a chance. Not only did he already lose to a terrible opponent, but he's one of the worst candidates in the Democratic field.

Now I can see that............He couldn't beat Warner but he could beat a rookie.....

I agree but the far left base of your party loves him....He is a bumbler from the word go but I would not count him out.......

Those statistics I posted are from the futures' stock market, representing the probability that each candidate will win the nomination.

For example, if you think that Hillary will be the nominee, you buy a futures contract. It's worth $100 if she becomes the nominee, and $0 if she doesn't. Right now, it's worth about $48, which means the stock market thinks she has about a 48% chance of being the nominee.

And since the markets are always efficient and take all information into account, they're usually a fairly accurate predictor.

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Former Vice President Al Gore -- the 2000 Democratic nominee for President who won more total popular votes than the ultimate "winner" of the race -- was frequently mentioned as a prospect for the 2008 race. Despite the wide speculation, Gore made it clear in March 2005 that he will not be a candidate for President in 2008.

What? No they don't. Almost everyone hates him (or at least thinks he would be a crappy candidate). Where in the world did you get the impression that the "far left base" loves him?

The stock market only gives him a 3.8% chance of winning the nomination...and personally I think that's overvalued.

I know it is sad that he will not be running however he did not say he would excuse himself from the process which seems to me that he means that he is not considering it at the moment. I think that if kerry runs again or hillary get the Nomination i will be voting republican of course that depends on who they put up to run for it.

I agree... I only supported Kerry becasue I bit my lip on the matter and hated Bush enough to vote for the extremist Liberal. Yes, I do not support Extremism on either side.
