The Defense Department's top civilian and its top military officer, undercutting the White House and other senior Republicans yesterday, said Congress doesn't endanger troop morale by voting on nonbinding resolutions opposing President Bush's Iraq reinforcement plan.
"From the standpoint of the troops, I believe that they understand how our legislature works and that they understand that there's going to be this kind of debate," said Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Peter Pace, effectively taking out of play an argument that had been made by Mr. Bush's spokesman and other top Republicans, who had warned resolutions disagreeing with the troop increase plan would send bad signals.
Joining Gen. Pace in testifying to the House Armed Services Committee, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said the troops are "sophisticated enough to understand" that the debate is about a way to move forward in Iraq.
The headline in the Washington Times today is in GIANT SIZED BOLD PRINT covering almost the entire "above the fold" section.
It seems that our Sec. of Defense and head of our Joint Chiefs understand what so many of the right wingers in this Forum do not...It's nice to see truth versus the outright lies that are posted here by right wingers every day

SALAZAR: . . . The reality of it is that I think 100 senators support our troops and they will make that statement and there‘s nothing that we have said that in any way, shape or form should impugn at all the patriotism and the loyalty that people here in the U.S. Senate feels to our American troops.
But questioning the president‘s plan and the policy is something that is our duty. We need to have a policy that is worthy of our troops who are on the ground. I think the debate that we‘re engaged in or want to have on the floor and want to have some votes on is an attempt for us to try to create a policy that is going to be a successful policy and a policy that is worthy of our troops.

Wow. That is nice to see. This is what democracy is all about.
Senator Salazar made a great statement on Hardball the other night. Senator Bond was accusing those who don't support the surge as NOT supporting our troops. Here's what Salazar said, which is right on the money.

Did you read the story or not Navy Pride? Are you suggesting that the Head of the Joint Chiefs and the Sec. of Defense are wrong or are liars or both? Which is it NP? They clearly stated that the Senates actions to debate the war does not bum out the troops so why can't you accept the truth? Is it because you don't like the truth so instead you'll alter it to make yourself feel better?I know when I was in Vietnam in 1968 and I saw the protests against the war and the troops back here in the U.S. it bothered me and my comrades at Cam Ranh Bay.........
I am sure that it bothers the guys in Iraq as it bothered us then.........
I am sure there are people protesting the war that are pacifists and are sincere and genuinely against it but as in Nam I feel that most protestors have a political agenda...........
Any soldier or sailor who'se morale is lowered because of peace protests and disagreements in the government simply doesn't understand the American freedom he's supposed to defend.
Did you avoid my question in my last post or what? Here it is again:Well that soldier and sailor see the American flags burned and hear the comments of left wing leaders like Kerry, Durbin, Kennedy, and Murtha and they wonder whose side these guys are on......They also see the same old suspects like Sheehan and "Hanoi Jane" and they wonder what their real agenda is.......
A lot of the old vets remember Vietnam and the hate of the left towards them.
It definitely dose not support morale........
Do you believe there is any difference between protesting the war and protesting the troops? I think there's plenty of difference. A tool is only as good as the tool who uses it, so it's naieve to blame the troops for a bad political situation. They aren't the ones who decided to go to war, and they aren't the ones deciding to stay. It's also naieve to blame all Vets for things like Abu Ghraib and the Mai Lai Massacre.Navy Pride said:Well that soldier and sailor see the American flags burned and hear the comments of left wing leaders like Kerry, Durbin, Kennedy, and Murtha and they wonder whose side these guys are on......They also see the same old suspects like Sheehan and "Hanoi Jane" and they wonder what their real agenda is.......

I don't know of any Iraq war protestor who is comparable to Hanoi Jane. Has anyone today had their picture taken while sitting on a mobile WMD launcher and chatting it up with al'Qaeda?
You must lead a very sheltered life if you haven't heard the comments made about our troops by your leaders Kerry, Murtha, Durbin and Kennedy..........Out rageous...
You know I have never seen and American Flag burned at a pro troop rally.......
Yeah, Cindy Sheehan with Hugo Chavez........

Then there is the guy from the Washington Post and a MSNBC correspondent who likened the young men in our military to mercenaries... then admitted that he did it on purpose in a later column... Can't remember the guy's name.
Funny you failed to mention he did it on a blog.

Can you show us specifically, not speculatively, not your opinion, but facts that prove that military families are being hurt by a Congressional debate on ending the war?I'm sure the Joint Chiefs and the Sec. of Defense are not wrong about our troop's morale. I have no doubt that this Voluntary Military that we are lucky enough to have in this country are doing their jobs and ignoring the politics going on.
But it sure doesn’t excuse the @ssholes that are hurting our troop's families with their disgusting clap trap.

I don't know aboutt the US but here in Britain the Iraq war is considered an unmitigated disaster, and has done great damage to Blair, if it wasn't for the spectre of the devil( Thatcher.) that haunts the conservative party and Britain at large he would of not been elected last time.
