With the 4$ generic drug sale, WalMart finally showed some ability to use its massive size to lower the cost of reported 300 generic perscriptions.

What does this do in terms of healthcare in the US???

What effect will it have on its competitors???

Who will benifit from this???

And can they sustain this for the long term???

What effect will it have on its competitors??? it will demolish family owned, private pharmacies, but target and kmart will need to step up to the bat to compete.

Who will benifit from this??? patients who have no insurance can afford their drugs.

And can they sustain this for the long term?? don't know, i'm not a business guru

I did purchase xtra walmart stocks though!

I'm not a big fan of wal-mart, and I'm not knocking their effort, but just so people don't get the wrong idea and think they are selling ALL generics for $4.00 they will be selling only 291 generic prescription medications for four dollars.

Also I heard Target is not far behind.

edit---oops, I see Goldenboy219 already pointed that out

Speaking of wal-mart and health. Shop and Shots...LOL

Intrepid Holdings Inc. will establish its first clinic in a Wal-Mart Supercenter on Oct. 18.

The clinic will be staffed with certified nurse practitioners with physician oversight. It will provide such services as routine physicals, and treatment for ear, eye, and skin infections. The clinic will offer screening for such conditions as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Routine lab tests are available for illnesses such as prostate cancer, hepatitis, and certain STDs. It also will offer flu shots and vaccinations.

It simply reveals what an enormous mark up there is on Generic medicines.
One presumes that Wal-Mart are not doing this as a loss leader, but it could be that that is in fact what it is, get the folk into the store first then see if there profits rise.
The problem will be, that if the bottom line does not increase, will Wal- Mart then shoot themselves in their metaphorical feet and discontinue this idea?

IMO, this is a friggin' briliant business decision. Most people have one pharmavy they use and if WM can give them a great price on a couple of their 'scrips, people will change their pharmacy to WM and buy all of their 'scrips there. Then while the libs are filling thier mood-levelers 'scrips , they'll also buy a bag of chips, a tube of toothpaste and a new screwdriver. This is all about one of the greatest loss-leader plans we've seen since 7-11 started selling the cheapest milk in town (at least where I live).

Its a good plan that helps curb the insane drug costs that Americans have to pay. Of course most drugs still cost way to much, but at least this will help out some people.

The only problem however, is if they lower their prices too far below the competition and the competition is effectively destroyed. What stops them from raising their prices again? It is not the first time they have done this nor are they the first massive corporation to do this either. It is great for now, but when they have the complete monopoly we are all screwed.

Don't forget about the cons walking around hammered on oxycontin with their pants shaped like pup tents due to the viagra.
