“Glaciers in the Himalayas are melting at an “exceptional” rate as they have lost ice 10 times more quickly over the last few decades than on average in previous decades after the so-called Little Ice Age.

In fact, Himalayan glaciers are disappearing far more rapidly than glaciers elsewhere.

“The ten-fold acceleration in ice loss we have observed across the Himalaya far exceeds any centennial-scale rates of change that have been recorded elsewhere in the world,” the scientists report.

“Himalayan glaciers are also declining faster where they end in lakes, which have several warming effects, rather than where they end on land. The number and size of these lakes are increasing so continued acceleration in mass loss can be expected,” the scientists note in a statement on their findings.

“Similarly, glaciers which have significant amounts of natural debris upon their surfaces are also losing mass more quickly: they contributed around 46.5% of total volume loss despite making up only around 7.5% of the total number of glaciers,” they say.

The shrivelling up of glaciers in the Himalayan mountain range, which has the world’s third-largest amount of glacier ice (after Antarctica and the Arctic), is bad news for millions of people iving in and around the Himalayas as their freshwater sources will become increasingly stressed. Rivers that originate in the Himalayas include the Brahmaputra, Ganges and Indus, upon which hundreds of millions of people depend.

“People in the region are already seeing changes that are beyond anything witnessed for centuries,” said Simon Cook, a senior lecturer in geography and environmental science at the University of Dundee who was a coauthor of the study.

“This research is just the latest confirmation that those changes are accelerating and that they will have a significant impact on entire nations and regions,” Cook added.”

Local ecosystems will also be severely impacted with the loss of ice in the mountain range, the experts have warned, adding that much of the ice loss is being driven by manmade climate change.

Nah, there’s no global warming.

That thar is jus weather y'all.

Besides that thar global warmin ain't nothin new, been happnin since like forever so stop blamin us humans fer that.

Besides who da f...k give a good G... d.... about what happnin in them thar Himalayan (darn it all, now I gotta look up where that thar Himalayan is, dont have a clue)

Whereupon someone will dutifully cite a hot day somewhere in Arizona or this one time that some ice regrew.

The rapid melt in the Himalayas is indeed related to fossil fuels, namely coal, but it is a regional issue connected to the huge amount of soot produced by dirty burning Chinese coal power plants and industry.

The issue is so bad we have long been able to see it from space.

Now, will the world do anything to curb Chinese polution? No. Would CCP listen? No. Does CCP care? No.

Wasn't there a nasty snow storm in Texas a couple of years back? PROOF that climate change ain't happening. :p

if it gets too hot, all the snowflakes will be gone

Nah, there’s no global warming.
This is contributing to the devastating floods in Pakistan.

We who accepted the science long ago, along with the gravity of our situation, have been dismayed by you, (in general) who refused to accept climate change.

And now, more than ever, we have cause to say:

"We Told You So"

The devastation is on you climate deniers.

Actually, China is terrified. Their rivers and lakes are drying up at an unprecedented rate, endangering the national security of the country. I’d expect their efforts to clean up their mess to expand proportional to the threat at hand. Because of their political system, they will probably be more effective than our country in a shorter period of time. They don’t have warring political factions to obstruct their progress like we do.

Chinese PEOPLE might be terrified, but not the CCP, which is all that matters in China. They care about the water insofar as it reduces their hydroelectric production, but they really don't care about the people poisoned by the pollution of their water table so long as the CCP members have access to clean water.

Their defilement of their region continues apace with no signs of slowing. THeir domestic economic policy all be requires that any private investment be done within China, which drives huge amounts of unnecessary construction, driving a high energy demand to build skyscrapers that nobody in China needs, much less can afford, and all the roads and infrastructure to support cities nobody lives in.

That doesn't change the fact that human activity is warming our planet and already causing widespread devastation.

We need to do more to combat climate change.

Chinas a dying nation. the United States could have been a leader on this issue and built all the technology for the future. We are leading from behind now and our influence is waning because half the stupid country is still pushing pro-oil policies.

The simple thing to do is kill off a few billion people. If we get the global population back down to 25 or 30 we should be good to go for a year or two.

If people really cared about Global warming, most of the world goals could be met by taking China to task on its pollution, but it won't happen

And most of that devastation is from air poultion like soot, which is so bad in China that it interferes with regional photosythesis.

Will it stop? No. China is barrelling headfirst into a catastrophe of their own making, which is the real concern, not the Western world... but we have creaed a looming economic and humanitarian crisis in the EU now trying to combat CO2 which isn't the actual problem.

Well, no. The US has developed most of the technology that you want.. the problem is it doesn't work as intended, and places like the EU are now beginning to suffer the consequences of pushing technology that isn't ready for prime time.

The CCP uses coal power because they know that the "renewables" that so many in the west crave couldn't sustain the energy needed in China to create those "renewable" technologies.

The world is pock marked by poisonous nickle and REM mines that are needed to feed the pollution Chinese inductries as well.

THe Green movement is a charade that as sucked the air out of the room for actual, realisttic and necessary conservation efforts to clean up the environments that these "green" projects are defiling.

What is the actual problem?

Artficial polution. Plastics, coal soot, poisonous industrial run off, scortched earth resource collection techniques. The things that actually destroy plants, rather than the thing that causes them to grow...

No, that is unacceptable. People will die anyway. Simply reduce births.

Governments everywhere must be pressured to take more aggressive action to combat climate change.

you don’t know anything about “green” power.

Europes problem is they relied on an authoritarian government for their natural gas. Remember, the Syrian war was started over a natural gas pipeline running through that country to get around Russia.

The position of 40% of the country^

In other words, or in your own words, THEY CARE ABOUT THE WATER !! There is no reason to suspect China will simply continue to ignore on-going and worsening ecological disasters in their own country. Conversely, there is every reason to believe that they can, and will, make every effort to mitigate deadly problems within their own borders, because they have a history of doing so.

Further supporting their need for hydroelectric power.

The things you assert about China may be largely true, but they are no more true of China than they are of our own country. We know how our elected officials have pandered to polluters for generations, and until we get the money out of our politics, that sad fact isn't about to change. Our last president dropped out of the Paris Agreement, and actually went so far as to promote the use of "clean coal" - about as laughable an oxymoron as anyone has ever heard. The big difference, as I have pointed out, is that when China wants to do something, there is no political obstruction to bringing every resource to bear on the problem. For example . . . . .

. . . . . an achievement which is nothing short of unimaginable in this country. And climateologically speaking, China has had a devastating year.

So just kill men? I guess that will work. We can start with all the white people and then work our way up the brown scale.

I think for every black man that gets killed we must even that out by offing 3 whities. Do you think 3 is enough?
