[W:#23,579]Ukraine War Thread

All that is a pittance compared to the real price of Russian gas. Never again.
There is a discussion about those 108% in Germany, because Habeck signed some rather overpriced contracts, but then Germany is rather rich and the Government swallowed most of it.

The article actually says this: "However, it has been particularly affected by its dependence on gas piped from Russia, and has previously announced a €7.3bn writedown on plants in Russia that have been expropriated."

The gas is Russian and Russia also confiscated BASF plants in Russia.
Yes, the pipeline not delivering cheap NG has hurt the German economy.

As far as Russia exproprating plants, that seems to not be the case at all. the plants have been abandoned by BASF.

The Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE has now decided to also wind down the company’s remaining business activities in Russia and Belarus by the beginning of July 2022. Exempt from this decision is business to support food production, as the war risks triggering a global food crisis. This decision is driven by the recent developments of the war and in international law, including the fifth E.U. sanctions package.

Yes so, I was correct right?

Yes Western companies have left Russia for good. They will never invest there again as long as Putin is still the leader.

BASF does a world wide restructuring for cost savings. That will cost 2700 jobs world wide, 700 in Germany. Apparently the 3 German plants are for several reasons not working as cost effective as other. BASF said overregulation was the main reason and the high cost of energy is part of it, on top of it they have overcapacities in Europe. The amonia plant in Antwerpen will be able to cover the EU market handily. One of the plants in Germany is producing a chemical with sales way below expectations and gets closed for that reason.
So, no gloom and doom in Germany. One bonus from the Ukraine war, the refugees are rather well educated and highly motivated to learn and get snatched up by the industry.
Ha sure it was wonderful for BASF to have the plants in Russia closed down by EU sanctions. The high cost of US LNG is being absorbed by the German government. You say in another post that the German government is rich. The government does not produce income. It spends tax money. In 2022 the individual tax rates in Germany went from 14%-42% in 2021 to 14%-45% in 2022.

They are still flying and being shot down.
Show your work.

Dozens and dozens of Russian jets have been shot down since this invasion started. When it comes to using anti-aircraft weaponry, the Ukrainians are no slouches.

Show what the Russian MOD says vs what the Ukrainian MOD says?

It's amazing how long they continue to hold out. I have no idea what to make of it.
We shall find out later if this was worth the cost
Wagner is being decimated
Russia's best troops are dying in the thousands
Infighting in Russia with the Head merc going off the rails as politics are at play, not strategy
In Russia, are people wondering why Russia cannot capture Bakhmut? But the more infighting within the leadership/Generals who were helpful to Wagner sidelined, as Putin will eventually need to spill some pulic blood to satisfy the hard right Russian mill bloggers

Something interesting. Someone who need not be named claimed Wagner "has captured Khromove". Interesting claim as three western news organizations are covering evacuations from Bakhmut from there just today...

Recessions, high inflation, and high interest rates don't go hand in hand.

Interest rates are raised to slow down inflation that typically occurs in a heated economy.
High interest rate slow spending. US is a consumer driven economy that China wishes they had
Consumer spending drops due to higher payments on anything using credit, companies lay off/go bankrupt. Tax base drops, impacting Govt revenues/lay-offs and on and on

Just look at the ramifications if SVB had failed
Credite Suisse is about to be taken over by UBS and the Govt kicking in funds

Financial experts agree a recession is coming. When and how hard it impacts various countries is yet to be seen

High interest rates in the long term = a recession is coming.
They only real questions are when & how hard

Yes so, I was correct right?
No you are wrong. The German industry and economy did not shut down because of the energy crisis.
In July 2022 the NG price peaked and has since then dropped to pre-war prices. For the time March till July Germany had to pay extremely high NG prices, while it filled its underground storages, which had been in February between 0% and 40% empty. Some of the storage run by Gazprom had been completly empty, what a surprise, which produced new regulations and oversight.
Naturally the extreme prices of June and July and the volume Germany needed to fill its storages, completly screwed up the average price for the year 2022.

Now you go back to ignore, have fun

Hamish and I grew up in St Johns.
We went there in 21. Only a week but a beautiful province from the little we did see
And those Puffins, amazing birds. Funny watching them land on water

For those who have never seen them land, mark 26
