To me it seems obvious that using this image,

avatar8069_7.gif

A pic of MLK in a hat that represents modern racism, a MAGA hat, which is clearly intended to mock not honor Mr. King is overtly racist.

Does anyone see it differently?

And if so, how so?

Re: Does using this image as an avatar make you a racist?

Not racist, just stupid or ignorant if they think MLK would have been MAGA. If they know MLK wouldn’t have been MAGA then it is disrespectful, but not racist. “Racism” has a specific meaning.

Re: Does using this image as an avatar make you a racist?

I just think it's funny. MLK was exactly opposite in most of his views on issues than the MAGAs.

Hardly. He was a REPUBLICAN and CONSERVATIVE.

That avatar does a spot on job of telling you all you need to know about the user...............:alert

But is not mocking, which is what this is obviously about, an assassinated black leader not racist?

Seems cut and dry to me.

MLK would burn that hat before he would wear it.

It is funny to mock an assassinated leader?

A man gives his life for his principles, for millions of others and we ridicule him and laugh?

You must know how I interpret your answer.

Should we poll that, too? :lamo

I would have voted but you just had to add in that extra little bit of "it's meant to honor MLK". It's not meant to honor MLK. But neither is it racist.

And just because you view the MAGA hat as meaning to represent modern racism doesn't mean that it actually does.

I don’t have enough info. With no info about who made it I cant say it is obviously mocking. Republicans love to try and say MLK was one of them, even though he never endorsed a Republican and there is no evidence he ever voted Republican. His public statements were critical of both parties.

The person who used the avatar may very well be racist, but the avatar itself isn’t enough to make me jump to the conclusion. To me a racist is someone who believes their race is superior to another’s. “Racially insensitive” is a lower threshold, in my book.

I don't think it's racist. In fact, I think MLK would be slapping the Trump haters upside the head...in a non-violent way, of course...for trying to push the notion that the hat, or Trump for that matter, is racist.

He would tell all the Trump haters to piss off...in a nice way, of course.

Huh?

One, it's satire - 'as if' Martin Luther King would EVER wear that hat!

Come on for god's sake, it amusing and shows indirectly just how anemic and demented are Trump's ideas.

I guess you to have grown up on National Lampoon to get it, it's like a picture of Nixon in hippy clothes.

Americans appear not to know what constitutes racism. You have high profile politicians, Trump being ONE of hundreds who routinely utter racist ****, carefully couched, but racist through and through like naming a sports team "Redskins" a derogatory term if there ever was on. You keep football stats comparing blacks to whites in performance. And as we speak the governor of Virginia is refusing to resign over having mocked people of color by appearing in black face.

From my perspective the whole county is racist and blacks and Hispanics are always getting screwed in one way or another. The worst is crime statistics and prison populations. Twice as many blacks in prison as their numbers would indicate.

We have a similar problem with First Nations, 70% of our prisons are native, and they a 7% of the population. That is not a crime statistic anymore, its a racial statistic and demonstrates that Canada has a long, long, long way to go.

It's like you're not even trying...

“Call it democracy, or call it democratic socialism, but there must be a better distribution of wealth within this country for all God’s children.” – Speech to the Negro American Labor"

No, it's not mocking him. It's saying that they think MLK would be for the MAGA thing.

No, is just funny that so many people today don't know what Martin Luther King actually stood for and what he actually said. They think he's a Republican. He's actually more of a socialist.

MLK was a small government guy, after getting his ass whipped and jailed by, the government.

He was also tried for tax evasion by the state of Alabama. He was acquitted by an all white jury, btw.

He was also anti-communist.

I don't recall anything about welfare, ghettos and planned parenthood in the I have a dream speech.

Speaking of planned parenthood, he was very pro-life.

There's no way the Democrats would let him in the party, now.

Feel free to use facts and logic vice emotion to rebut.

Damn. It appears I'm going to actually have to post his words...

“I imagine you already know that I am much more socialistic in my economic theory than capitalistic… [Capitalism] started out with a noble and high motive… but like most human systems it fell victim to the very thing it was revolting against. So today capitalism has out-lived its usefulness.” – Letter to Coretta Scott, July 18, 1952."

Re: Does using this image as an avatar make you a racist?

Racist? No.

Here we go again, where accusations of racism are really little more than 'that, or whom, which I don't like'.

No, is just funny that so many people today don't know what Martin Luther King actually stood for and what he actually said. They think he's a Republican. He's actually more of a socialist.

He wasn't a socialist:

“First, I rejected their materialistic interpretation of history. Communism, avowedly secularistic and materialistic, has no place for God,” he wrote.

“Second, I strongly disagreed with communism’s ethical relativism. Since for the Communist there is no divine government, no absolute moral order, there are no fixed, immutable principles; consequently almost anything – force, violence murder, lying – is a justifiable means to the ‘millennial’ end,” he wrote.

“Third, I opposed communism’s political totalitarianism. In communism, the individual ends up in subjection to the state. … And if man’s so-called rights and liberties stand in the way of that end, they are simply swept aside,” King wrote. “His liberties of expression, his freedom to vote, his freedom to listen to what news he likes or to choose his books are all restricted.”

“Man becomes hardly more, in communism, than a depersonalized cog in the turning wheel of the state,” King concluded.

It was the white supremacists who circulated the notion that MLK was a communist/socialist in order to demonize him.

It is indeed your avatar that prompted me to start this thread if that is what you mean. I am also miffed that you were not told to remove it.

I find that disturbing too.

Hey, you wanted us to notice your hated and we did so you do win, I "get" that.

Congratulations.

There were a lot of topics he didn’t delve into. Personally, based on his criticism of both parties I would consider him more independent by today’s standards. But even if he was Republican it wouldn’t make him MAGA as a significant portion of Republicans don’t subscribe to MAGA.

Oh, we all know that. It's at least the second thread of it's kind. :lamo

I agree with that. However, a big government, pro-abortion leftist he was not.

If he were alive today, he would be labled an uncle tom.
