After searching for a while I couldn't find this kind of poll.

I'm interested in seeing how many people we have from each political lean at DP.

Select your political lean.

I think it's all pretty balanced. I'll add that I think the very liberal seems to out number the very conservative. Also, I'm not going by what they claim as their lean, but how they come across in their posts.

Whoops, I totally scewed up! LOL, I'm a Conservative. If I was a bible thumper, I'd call myself very Conservative.
By the way how do you think DP leans?

Hell if I know... that's why I'm asking ;)

With over 9000 members here it would be impossible to make an accurate guess... but I'll guess the average is near the middle :)

DP probably is fairly center that will lean to the right a bit. Although recently we have had an influx of partisan hacks from both side making it hard to debate anything.

There's a page somewhere that shows the stats on this, though I can't find it at the moment. It also includes everyone who was ever a member for the past 6+ years, so it might not be very representative of the forum today.

I'm a conservative in the truest sense. Unfortunately, most people think that conservatism is composed of religious wing-nuts and military zealots, something I'm certainly not. I'm a conservative in the Goldwater sense, not in the neo-conservative sense. Those people are just extremist religious fiscal liberals in disguise.

I'd say it's hard to debate things on forums in general. I've been to multiple forums in the past (this one is by far the best by the way!), and typically people's minds are already made up as they "debate" things. The only time I've seen opinions be changed is through supplying and reading good points or new factual articles... and definitely not through attacking other people's ideologies, which I see here and elsewhere all the time.:thumbdown

But even with good points and facts, it's sometimes hard to get through to some people... admittedly, myself included sometimes! But I do my best to keep an open mind.

I would say that overall the site leans slightly conservative. At least the conservatives tend to have the loudest (and as far as I can tell angriest) voice.

Mega, you were supposed to pick YOUR political lean. lol

:failpail:

Can a Mod capitalize "YOUR" in the poll question for me? :) Or maybe just add a "your" into the title. (Eg. "VOTE: Your Political Lean on DP") THANKS!

Oops, i voted off the thread title, not the poll title.

Your is now YOUR.

As Right mentioned, we used to have a page with user stats that was really cool, which showed that the board had overall more conservative members than liberals, but not by a large margin. Those numbers where for the life of the board, so that may be different now(though I doubt it).

I am of course a far left tree hugging, flag burning, troop hating, terrorist loving liberal, and proud of it.

When liblady thanks you, you screwed up. Try that again.....you're way overboard.

I know my question sounded stupid. :) However people seem to post leans that don't always fit their posts in my opinion. I was wondering how people perceive the lean or lack of on DP.

"In the truest sense" is kind of funny to see, really. The disputes back and forth over who or what is correctly conservative is a long-held debate. A very interesting and thought-provoking debate.

That being said, many neoconservatives are not "religious nutjobs", but are rather religious utilitarians. Religion can be seen as a healthy expression of the human condition and thus benefits society in numerous ways, particularly aiding societal problems that are not amenable to public policy. Fiscal liberalism is somewhat harder to argue against. Many are seen as conservative for not really siding with Democrats on public policy spending, and yet seen as too liberal for those under the belief of someone less than Nixonian, or perhaps even Reagan (where a decent amount of the time, neoconservatives were fairly comfortable domestically).

I have been called a liberal pretty often on other forums. Which is sometimes true when it comes to certain issues. I think this is partly because I sometimes defend Obama or the Democrats while disagreeing with the Republicans... this is mostly because when it comes to the economy I'm willing to give the Democrat's plan a chance, thinking that an economy cannot turn around over night. Of course if the economy gets worse again then my defensive position will change quickly. I am fiscally conservative in a sense of believing in having a surplus and no debt... but I do feel that certain government programs are important, or at the very least are worth investing in. This is obviously on a case by case basis.

When it comes to social issues I often stand in the middle or take the side lines... I recognize that people have different opinions and I more often than not am in favor of compromises.

For example:
- I'm neither strongly for nor strongly against gay marriage since it doesn't effect me, but I think at the very least gay couples should be able to get civil unions and get the benefits from that.
- I'm against abortion, but I wouldn't ban abortions. As I said in another thread, I'd simply prefer people to choose life (the life of the child). The main exception is if mother's life would be threatened.
- When considering people's personal freedoms I'm in favor of legalizing marijuana, but when considering the overall progression of a society, I'd prefer people chose not to use drugs. Still, I'd let each state decide for themselves.
- I don't know if climate change is caused by human activity, but I still think we should be investing in renewable energy. If we don't, we'll be missing out on a huge export opportunity and we'll be buying more things from over seas.

Do these things sound moderate? :)

Why did they get rid of that? Bring it back DP admin!

Wondering why Libertarian is under "Very Liberal". That's odd.

I am fiscally conservative, socially liberal = Libertarian

I mainly stuck to the order used when selecting your "Political Leaning" in your profile.

also the most honest-I see "centrists" and moderates who are hard core socialist left and at least two libertarians who are very left as well

From what you've written here, I would say yes.

The site is far, far more socially liberal than the general population but also much more fiscally conservative. It's also waaaay more right-wing than the interent as a whole, probably because the average age is so much higher.

With over 9000 members here

I love how this probably wasn't intentional (...was it?)
