Visigoths at the Gate?Charles Krauthammer - Visigoths at the gate?

By Charles Krauthammer

When facing a tsunami, what do you do? Pray, and tell yourself stories. I am not privy to the Democrats' private prayers, but I do hear the stories they're telling themselves. The new meme is that there's a civil war raging in the Republican Party. The tea party will wreck it from within and prove to be the Democrats' salvation.

I don't blame anyone for seeking a deus ex machina when about to be swept out to sea. But this salvation du jour is flimsier than most.

In fact, the big political story of the year is the contrary: that a spontaneous and quite anarchic movement with no recognized leadership or discernible organization has been merged with such relative ease into the Republican Party.
The angry, frustrated, unhappy Republicans, Independents, Democrats, and previously uninterested non-voters who have had enough and are not going to take it anymore, those are The Tea Party. This isn’t anymore a political party issue, it has become and American issue.

What is at stake and the level of clear and present danger are different now than when The Perot Party was formed. The major upsets in Virginia, New Jersey, and in Massachusetts were triggered by The Tea Party due precisely to huge political stake and people’s insecurities.

The Tea Party started on February 19, 2009 when Rick Santelli on CNBC Business Newslive called for a Chicago Tea Party, where he criticized the unfairness of taxpayers paying the mortgages of those who couldn’t afford them and shouldn’t get them. In response fiscally conservative activists began to organized groups that quickly spread and adopted the Tea Party mantra. November election will test their strength and resilience.

I went and checked. It was the FedEx guy, actually.

Trick or treaters actually. No kidding, sister just got home and said there is a bunch of folks by the gate into the community here hoping some one will let them in since they think rich people give better candy. Based on what we are giving out, it may be true, I am hoping for leftovers.

This is wrong, it originally grew out of Ron Paul Presidental campaign.

Due to all the news that's available now in the Internet, the truth can more easily be filtered out from the lies and distortions disseminated all over the place by both parties, in particular by the Democrat party.

It is very hard to understand how the voters can vote for Democrats incumbents that have controlled the Congress since 2006, after all the dirty tricks carried out by Obama, Reid, Barney Frank, Dodd, Pelosi, and others.

It's because they don't like the dirty tricks carried out by Republicans either.

It's also hard to understand how the voters can actually believe the Republicans when they use words like "marxist."

Democrats believed that the Republican Party will self-destruct. But in reality the Democratic Party suffered the largest loss in a single election since the 1946 elections. Taking into consideration the state and local elections, this was the larger gained for the Republican Party since the Great Depression.

One good lesson to learn from the Obama Administration is that the American people have experienced the harmful effects of the Democratic Party anti-business, tax and spend policies, and a weak foreign policy. The new generation has learned this lesson, which already took place under the Carter Presidency 30 years ago, a lesson the country forgot. History repeats itself.

What the Tea Party stands for? It stands for a balance budget, reduced spending, secure borders and a return to constitutional limitations. Can the liberals explain how those concepts are extreme? Of course they can’t, mostly what they do is shout expletives like racist and extreme instead of constructive criticism.

The Democrats attacked the very people they needed to get elected. They acted like the Tea Party is a small group of people with an agenda, when in reality, we are many millions of fed up Americans who want to return to limited government, control on spending and economic growth. If you sow prejudice, you will reap prejudice. They reaped what they sew in the election.

Irony much? Visigoths originated as Germanic barbarians, occupied the Iberian peninsula, and their modern day equivalents are Spanish speakers. They're at the gates?

The mid-term election has proved that the majority of the people in USA believe that Western values and principles are worth fighting for. If we don’t risk anything, we will risk even more. The people fought for their agenda and they won. The American dream that anything is attainable through hard work and perseverance is still alive.

Progressives live in their own fantasy world, and many of them don’t understand that their world comes from the intellectual history of liberalism. Probably few of them have heard of Gunnar Myrdal, one of the most important liberal philosopher and supporter of John Maynard Keynes economic theory. Some of Gunnar ideas in economic and the welfare state have been implemented in the US and we are stuck with the unintentional consequences of implementing those ideas.

Agreed... This type of non-violent political re-alignment / revolution has been called for, as far as I know, over at least the past decade. Finally, the issues are becoming apparent enough that people are beginning to realize the true costs of their previous apathy.

What is at stake and the level of clear and present danger are different now than when The Perot Party was formed. The major upsets in Virginia, New Jersey, and in Massachusetts were triggered by The Tea Party due precisely to huge political stake and people’s insecurities.

I disagree with you here... the 'upsets' were due to the general idea of 'kick the bums out' in the past election. There was a great deal of incumbents that were voted out, anyone that was viewed as corrupt lost... anyone that clinton campaigned for lost.

This is because in general people are just sick of what they are getting out of politics because it's clear that the politicians are not acting in the best interests of the people... and people are sick of it.

No, this is wrong... the tea parties started out organically... the first such tea party was a party to toss a 9-11 commision report full of holes into the water. Though that didn't really get any coverage. It's morphed now, and since then the republicans have attempted to co-opt the tea party movement, and also the left has similarly attempted to create a 'left-wing' variety... the problem is that the real tea party is NOT about left-right politics no matter how much it gets put into that.

That's not important what this is being 'called' because the sentiment behind it is unique for each individual... the only common thread is the discontent with the status quo.

This is wrong, it originally grew out of Ron Paul Presidental campaign.

Ya, that's when it started getting big. If Ron Paul had been given an honest chance during his campaign for president, he would be president right now, and we'd be getting some REAL change for the better.

They get away with this because there is an artificial choice to make... do you vote for the puppet with the red shirt or the blue shirt. Then the winner eventually gets chastised and hated and so people vote for the alternative and the cycle repeats... Nobody even looks at the man behind the curtain pulling the strings.
