Violence breaks out at Israel holy site - Focus on Israel/Palestinians - MSNBC.com

Its 60 yards away!.....

JERUSALEM - Hundreds of angry Islamic worshippers threw stones and scuffled with police on Friday in an eruption of outrage over contentious Israeli renovation work at a disputed Old City holy site.

About 200 police streamed onto the hilltop compound known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount, to try to quell the violence, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. Witnesses said police hurled stun grenades.

Several dozen protesters barricaded themselves inside the Al-Aqsa mosque at the compound, which is Islam’s third-holiest site. The protesters are angry about Israeli repair work on an earthen ramp leading to the hilltop compound, which they fear will damage the mosque.

Israeli authorities promised that the plan to replace a centuries-old ramp damaged in a 2004 snowstorm would not damage the compound, about 60 yards way. But when work began earlier this week, it drew fierce protests in the Arab world, where many leaders accused Israel of plotting to harm Muslim holy sites.

On Thursday, a fiery Islamic leader appealed to fellow Israeli Arabs and Muslims around the world to rise up against the Israeli renovations.

“The aggression happening now is a tragedy, a crime,” Raed Salah, a leader of the Islamic Movement in Israel, told The Associated Press. He accused Israel of declaring “a regional religious war.”

"accused Israel of plotting to harm Muslim holy sites."

It is funny and sad, but that is the type of remark I would expect from a paranoid schizophrenic.

To put it quite succinctly, the al-Aqsa Mosque has not been adequately maintained by the Muslims who manage the complex. It is a disaster waiting to happen.

Years ago, Israeli geologists and structural engineers did a survey of the Wailing Wall / Dome of the Rock complex. What they discovered was that portions of the complex are structurally in a dangerous state. This technical information was provided to the Muslims who manage the Islamic portion of the holy site. To date, they have done nothing to rehabilitate the Dome of the Rock and ensure the safety of Muslims engaged in pilgrimage. Accordingly, Israeli authorities are doing what must be done to preserve structural integrity and guarantee safety. For the life of me, I can't understand why Islam refuses to maintain what is claimed to be Islam's third holiest site.

In a nutshell, the Muslim managers of the Dome are incompetent and have allowed the complex to structurally degenerate. On the one hand, they complain and protest against Israeli efforts to prevent a disaster. On the other hand - should a disaster occur - they will claim that Israel knew a disaster was possible (the technical survey) and is therefore responsible for any human casualties and structural damage. Damned if you do and damned if you don't. Inexplicable, yet very typical.

first of all cowboy, violence broke out at the site of the Al-aqsa and Dome of the rock, it is a Muslim holy site, and an occupied part of the future state of palestine.

Palestinians have a great reason to fear and be skeptical to Israeli policies there...
On June 7, 1967, Israel occuped east jerusalem and demolished the mughrabi neighborhood in the old city ajacent to the al-aqsa haram and the wailing wall. 135 houses, two mosques, and two zaouias were demolished. On April 18 1968, it officially expropriated the land of the quarter for public use, along with the Jewish Quarter. In the ruins of the mughrabi neighborhood, it built a large plaza.

The al-aqsa was burned by an australian in 1969.

Several tunnels were dug under the al-aqsa sparking the 1996 tunnel intifada

Israel had demolished and evicted thousands of palestinians from jerusalem, and constructed jewish neighborhoods after the 1967 occupation to judaise the place.

Jews have designed and prepared for a synagogue to be constructed atop their planned demolished ruins of the al-aqsa and dome of the rock.

Jewish immigrants are allowed easy permits to construct wherever they please in east jerusalem while palestinian homes are demolished.

The al-aqsa intifada errupted in 2000 when the butcher Sharon entered the holy sanctuary with one thousand armed men and declared it property of Israel. Seventeen un-armed palestinians were killed withing twenty four hours.

When Jordan invaded Israel from the east in 1967, the IDF repulsed the Jordanians and captured Jerusalem. What the IDF discovered was shocking. The Jordanians had set up public urinals that faced the Wailing Wall, which is the holiest site in Judaism. The IDF cleared the Wailing Wall and the plaza which fronts it. Such wanton religious disrespect is one of the reasons Jerusalem will remain Israeli.

This is true, but Jenin neglects to mention a few things. The Australian was neither Israeli nor Jewish, and was a mentally disturbed tourist. Here are a few pertinint excerpts from palestinefacts.org

Immediately after the fire was discovered, stormy demonstrations broke out in the Arab sections of Jerusalem and in the territories. Police blocked all entrances to the Temple Mount and mobilized thousands of officers to deal with rioters. In the afternoon, a general curfew was declared in East Jerusalem. It was assumed by officials that the fire was caused by an electrical fault, and the fire was put out quickly, but rumors spread of Israeli responsibility.

The president of the Muslim Council claimed arson and charged deliberately slow response on the part of the fire brigades, although brigades from West and East Jerusalem fought the blaze together for four hours while an angry Muslim crowd chanted "Allahu Akbar" and "Down with Israel." The fire was put out by Israeli firemen, despite attacks upon them by Muslim bystanders, who also cut some of the fire hoses. Onlookers stoned Israeli fire trucks summoned to extinguish the fire, claiming they brought gasoline instead of water to the fire.
The al-Aqsa Mosque fire of 1969

Several tunnels were dug under the al-aqsa sparking the 1996 tunnel intifada.
These supposed 'tunnels' were in fact ancient Roman aqueducts being investigated by the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA). After Muslim complaints, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin ordered that the tunnel opening be sealed. Since then, there has been no digging in the direction of the Temple Mount and there are no plans to do so. Muslim religious and academic scholars rewrite the city's history. They deny the existence of the first and second temples in Jerusalem, and even argue that the mosques on the Temple Mount preceded the presence of Judaism in Jerusalem.

Israel had demolished and evicted thousands of palestinians from jerusalem, and constructed jewish neighborhoods after the 1967 occupation to judaise the place.
No occupation. Jordan attacked and lost the city. If one examines the topological maps that are part and parcel of the Israel/Jordan Peace Treaty, the city of Jerusalem is located in Israel proper and the city is not bifurcated in any manner whatsoever. It is Israeli.

Jews have designed and prepared for a synagogue to be constructed atop their planned demolished ruins of the al-aqsa and dome of the rock.
What Jews? Designed? Where are the plan schematics? Prepared? Are the construction materials on-site? No? I didn't think so.

Jewish immigrants are allowed easy permits to construct wherever they please in east jerusalem while palestinian homes are demolished.
In kind, Jewish homes in Gaza were confiscated by Fatah and apportioned to high-ranking Fatah leaders. Synagogues were demolished.

The al-aqsa intifada errupted in 2000 when the butcher Sharon entered the holy sanctuary with one thousand armed men and declared it property of Israel. Seventeen un-armed palestinians were killed withing twenty four hours.
Arafat was looking for any excuse to save his miserable hide.

Tashah,

The al-Aqsa and Dome of the Rock are administered by Muslim clergy.

French churches were administered by french priests during Nazi occupation of france. This does not negate the fact that East Jerusalem and palestinian holy sites (excluding jewish westernwall and synagogues) are considered occupied territory.

When Jordan invaded Israel from the east in 1967, the IDF repulsed the Jordanians and captured Jerusalem. .

1)You know and I know that King Hussein would not join the battle and was in agreement with the Israelis on his occupation of the palestinian west bank and East Jerusalem as was his father and grandfather before him.
2) Israel started the war and launched it's blitzkreig in 67.
3) Jordanian troops on the ground fought against the Israeli troops in the west of Jerusalem against the orders of Hussein and the Israelis, who shelled and beseiged the city.

What the IDF discovered was shocking. The Jordanians had set up public urinals that faced the Wailing Wall, which is the holiest site in Judaism. The IDF cleared the Wailing Wall and the plaza which fronts it.

I did not know that, and I agree with you that it is wrong. I would like you to provide me with a link that I can examine and learn more about this urinal situation. Where were the exactly placed? This is un-islamic and dishonorable and I hope to read up on this some more. Please help me out here by providing a link with elaboration.

Such wanton religious disrespect is one of the reasons Jerusalem will remain Israeli
1) Religeous disrespect is right and goes both ways. You neglect the demolition of hundreds of mosques and churches in the land captured by Israel in 1948, and this:
On June 7, 1967, Israel occuped east jerusalem and demolished the mughrabi neighborhood in the old city ajacent to the al-aqsa haram and the wailing wall. 135 houses, two mosques, and two zaouias were demolished.
2)Occupation of the future palestinian capital, Demolition of native homes and evictions, Judaization of the city and insistance that it remain eternally zionist occupied will never end the conflict.
3) Palestinians in 67 occupied east jerusalem are not granted citizenship, they are granted blue jerusalem occupation IDs (second class, but better than the green west bank IDs) While those holding these IDs are allowed freedom of movement, they are rarely allowed permits to construct or reconstruct their homes in Jerusalem, many have their ID's suspended and withdrawn and are deported deeper east to the west bank bantustans or to Gaza. My Jerusalem ID and my Father's were taken from us. We paid thousands of dollars and hired lawyers. I waited from midnight to the next morning slept on the sidewalk of the Israeli interior ministry in Salahudeen street in east Jerusalem to be one of the provilaged thirty allowed to enter and talk to an Israeli official that day. We paid thousands of dollars to an Israeli lawyer. Got the IDs back, and had them taken from us the next year at the border. Our choice was to either move out from Jerusalem and reside east of the confiscation wall in the west bank ghetto, or request to live in the Gaza prison. We are lucky to be American citizens however, and they give us hell every time we cross even though we are americans.
This is true, but Jenin neglects to mention a few things. The Australian was neither Israeli nor Jewish, and was a mentally disturbed tourist. Here are a few pertinint excerpts from palestinefacts.org
Im amazed why this man was probably not stopped for 4 to 6 hours at the Israeli controlled border like arabs are. Here is a criminal that was probably granted easy access. Racial profiling can be understood only from your pov. Put yourself in my shoes (this is also a response to you from the palestine trip post).

And what about the tunnel dug by Nitenyahoo in '96? Palestinians have requested a complete cessation of all tunnel digging around and under their holy sites, they have a right to be fearful.

Palestinians argue that our father abraham (or his children/decendants) built al-aqsa. He was not a jew, he was a believer in the One God. It does not matter whether the temples existed or not, it only matters to those who wish to see a destruction and reconstruction atop our muslim holy sites.

No occupation. Jordan attacked and lost the city. If one examines the topological maps that are part and parcel of the Israel/Jordan Peace Treaty, the city of Jerusalem is located in Israel proper and the city is not bifurcated in any manner whatsoever. It is Israeli.
The 1967 war began with an Israeli blitz. Jordan's King signed over his occupation rights to the Israelis.
UN resolution 242 preceeds Hussein's handover of rights. The west bank and East Jerusalem were never his property anyways. They were given to his fathers by Imperial britain and zionist-hussein and father map drawings and agreements.

What Jews? Designed? Where are the plan schematics? Prepared? Are the construction materials on-site? No? I didn't think so

I apologize. I meant jewish and evangelical extremists. There are plans and blueprints as I am sure you know and are certain construction materials. Not on site yet, to the dissmay of the extremists.
The Israeli people, in majority are against these plans but you know that settlers, khanists, lieberman and his crew, and other zionist expansionists want to do just that. Palestinians are rightly fearful.

In kind, Jewish homes in Gaza were confiscated by Fatah and apportioned to high-ranking Fatah leaders. Synagogues were demolished

You mean emptied jewish settlements. Settlements that were constructed atop confiscated palestinian land and ruins. Occupation of Gaza was no longer feasible and so they withdrew only to accelerate the west bank bantustan project, confiscation wall and settlement expansion.
So it is not in kind. It is not a parallel circumstance.

1)You know and I know that King Hussein would not join the battle and was in agreement with the Israelis on his occupation of the palestinian west bank and East Jerusalem as was his father and grandfather before him.
Read your history. Jordan entered the war when they mistakenly believed via radar that Egyptian planes were bombing Tel Aviv. In fact, these were IAF planes returning to Israel after decimating the Egyptian Air Force.

2) Israel started the war and launched it's blitzkreig in 67.
Read your history. Israel only acted after Egypt, Syria, and Jordan massed troops at the Israel border. The Egyptians also closed the Red Sea to Israeli shipping.

3) Jordanian troops on the ground fought against the Israeli troops in the west of Jerusalem against the orders of Hussein and the Israelis, who shelled and beseiged the city.
Read your history. Unfortunately for Jordan at the time, its military forces were under the control of an Egyptian general and a British advisor. They both misread the situation and ordered Jordanian forces forward into Israel. The Jordanians blockaded the Jewish section of Jerusalem. After several attempts to break the blockade, the IDF finally prevailed and captured the entire city.

I did not know that, and I agree with you that it is wrong. I would like you to provide me with a link that I can examine and learn more about this urinal situation. Where were the exactly placed? Many photographs exist in Israeli museums. I could not locate this specifity online though. The closest I could find on a short search is this:

Under Jordanian rule of Jerusalem, Jews were forbidden from entering the Old City and its holy sites, and Jewish cemeteries had been desecrated. After Israel's capture of Jerusalem in 1967, all religious groups were granted administration over their holy sites. Temple Mount, for example, is under full administration by a Muslim council.

You neglected to mention this:

After 1948, the Moroccan quarter, with the rest of the Old City, passed into the hands of Jordan, and the adjacent Jewish Quarter was burned and demolished by the Jordanian Army.

Jerusalem is not occupied. The City of David is liberated and the capital of Israel. If the Palestinian radicals cannot understand this, then indeed the conflict will never end.

And what about the tunnel dug by Nitenyahoo in '96? Palestinians have requested a complete cessation of all tunnel digging around and under their holy sites, they have a right to be fearful.
What about this in 1996?

In 1996 the Waqf began construction in the structures known since Crusader times as Solomon's Stables, and in the Eastern Hulda Gate passageway, allowed the area to be (re)opened as a mosque called the Marwani Musalla (claimed by Israel to be new, by Palestinians to be restored from pre-Crusader times, having been built by a calif named Marwani, and the Crusaders having turned it into stables) capable of accommodating 7,000 individuals. Many Israelis regard this as a radical change of the status quo under which the site had been administered since the Six-Day War which should not have been undertaken without consulting the Israeli government; Palestinians regard these objections as irrelevant.

And this in 2005?

On March 30, 2005, the southern wall of the Temple Mount was found to have been the target of vandals. The word "Allah" in approximately a foot tall Arabic script was found newly carved into the ancient stones. The vandalism was attributed to a team of Jordanian engineers and Palestinian laborers in charge of strengthening that section of the wall. The discovery caused outrage among Israeli archaeologists and many Jews were angered by the “graffiti” at Judaism’s holiest site.

I did find this:

During the Sukkot festival in 2006 Uri Ariel, a member of the knesset from the National Union party ascended to the mount, [42] and said that he's preparing a plan where a synagogue will be built on the mount. His suggested synagogue won't be built instead of the mosques but in a separate area in accordance with rulings of the prominent Rabbis. He said he believed that this will be correcting a historical injustice and that it's an opportunity for the Muslim world to prove that it's tolerant to all faiths.
Temple Mount - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And I also found this:

October 14, 2006, it was reported in The Times [16] that there are plans to build a new minaret, the first of its kind for 600 years, on the Temple Mount. King Abdullah II of Jordan announced a competition to design a fifth minaret for the walls of the Temple Mount complex, imprinting his Hashemite dynasty on the site. The new addition would, the King said, “reflect the Islamic significance and sanctity of the mosque”. The scheme is likely to cost £200,000. The plans are for a seven-sided tower — after the seven-pointed Hashemite star — and at 42 metres (130ft), it would be 3.5 metres (11ft) taller than the next-largest minaret. The minaret will be constructed on the eastern wall of the Temple Mount near the Golden Gate.

Although Israel has not objected and plans are on track for construction to begin early 2007 [17], a leading Israeli archeologist lambasted the plan. "I am against any change in the status quo on the Temple Mount", said Bar-Ilan University's Dr. Gabi Barkai, a member of the Committee for the Prevention of Destruction of Antiquities on the Temple Mount. "If the status quo is being changed, then it should not just be the addition of Muslim structures at the site”.

Tasha,

You have to remember that Jenin is a brainwashed minion of islamarchy. He has never had access to the truth. His parents have never had access to the truth. What they believe is the truth is nothing more than the hate spewage of racist, anti-semite, nazi-tied radicalist clerics.

These same clerics made laws which make conversation away from Islam a crime punishable by death. The Islamics, and to some small degree the Chinese, are the ONLY groups of people who still live by archaiac 16th century philosphies.

People like Jenin should be pittied and then summarily ignored UNTIL they break free of the islam-o-nazi brainwashing.

Israel pre-emptively attacked it's neighbors and conquered their lands and then began to systematically settle them. Countless peace resolutions have been ignored by Israel and it's American imperial ally inorder to expand the zionist project.

The siniai was settled, the Golan, the west bank, gaza. Those lands returned were returned only to secure the settlement and expansion on other land.

Read your history. Israel only acted after Egypt, Syria, and Jordan massed troops at the Israel border. The Egyptians also closed the Red Sea to Israeli shipping.

That is extremely misleading and you know it. It also can be used to justify the Arab argument regarding Israel's occupation past it's own border.
No mention of the American-Egyptian negotiations for a peaceful end to the conflict that was used to fool the egyptians and under it's circumstances Israeli surprise attack was initiated.

Uh huh. So. Jews now control Wikipedia?

Israel pre-emptively attacked it's neighbors and conquered their lands and then began to systematically settle them. Countless peace resolutions have been ignored by Israel and it's American imperial ally inorder to expand the zionist project.
Uh huh. Did Israel settle Cairo? Damascus? Amman?

Read your history. Palestine has rejected every peace overture and settlement from the British Mandate to today. With the recent murder-bombing in Eilat and the unending rocket attacks on Sderot, Palestine has also rejected the latest cease-fire agreement.

The siniai was settled, the Golan, the west bank, gaza. Those lands returned were returned only to secure the settlement and expansion on other land.
If that is so, then take up the 'betrayal' with your Arab brethern. Egypt and Jordan signed peace treaties with Israel and their 'conquered lands' were returned in-toto. You seem to have an excuse for everything.

That is extremely misleading and you know it. It also can be used to justify the Arab argument regarding Israel's occupation past it's own border.
Read your history. Egypt did indeed close the Red Sea to Israeli shipping.

No mention of the American-Egyptian negotiations for a peaceful end to the conflict that was used to fool the egyptians and under it's circumstances Israeli surprise attack was initiated.
Why did Nasser mass troops on the border and threaten to destroy Israel in radio broadcasts? Why did Nasser blockade Eilat? Why was an Egyptian general in command of Jordanian forces? Why didn't Nasser negotiate with Israel?

The same Arab tactics were a preclude to the Gulf War. Iraq massed forces on the Kuwait border. Iraq harassed Kuwaiti shipping. Iraq threatened to invade Kuwait. Iraq DID invade Kuwait. Unfortunately for Kuwait, it ignored the tactical lessons of 1967. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck etc........
