Verdict reached in CIA leak trial of Lewis 'Scooter' Libby

Libby Guilty of Lying in C.I.A. Leak Case

The apologetics here have been rambling for months how there had been no crime committed, yada yada yada. All that empty speculation was just that, meaningless. Spin yourselves out of this one.
WASHINGTON, March 6 — I. Lewis Libby Jr., the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, was convicted today of lying to F.B.I. agents and grand jurors investigating the unmasking of a C.I.A. operative amid a burning dispute over the war in Iraq.
The jury rejected Mr. Libby’s claims of memory lapses as it convicted him of obstruction of justice, giving false statements to the F.B.I. and perjuring himself, charges embodied in four of the five counts of the indictment.
The panel acquitted him on an additional count of making false statements to the F.B.I.

This one is dedicated to Stinger (have a nice day)!

I have an inherent distrust for politics and politicians.

I want a limited government because government holds monopoly power over all of us. To that end I want to pursue any abuse of power committed by those that hold office or work for those that hold office.

Why other so-called conservatives would try to sweep this under the rug is beyond me.

It's quite entertaining watching the neocon apologetics here landing on their mouths flat on the ground here, down playing this as nothing unexpected of the sort. While for the last few months they've been screaming no crime was committed. In fact we have one apologetic just today claiming how there was low evidence and the jury was hung:rofl

You really are a conservative, good stuff.
The other's are what I call apologetic neocons.

Fitzgerald says the investigation is "inactive" and that he does not expect to file more charges.

That is, he's not going after Cheney or Rove.

Liberals everywhere are crying in their Cheerios.

Why are you against the investigations of corrupt government that's abusing it's power? I thought you were a conservative all about rolling back the powers of big government?

... and conservatives are wiping the sweet from their brow and crying for over their Fiber One that they failed to bully their way out of this.

Ummm. Because they're not actually conservative? Most "conservatives" these days really want a government just as big as the Democrats. They just want that big government in different areas. I'm not sure how Republican and conservative can even remotely be considered synonymous after these past 6 years...

That doesn't stand up to what the CIA itself said in asking for the investigation nor does it stand up to the logic of the events that unfolded. As of a few minutes ago, we have legal proof she was not just a typist.

The clerk typist was my attempt at humor.....She sure as hell was not a covert CIA agent though and had not been one in years..

Isn't it ironic the double standard when a guy like Sandy Berger can actually get caught stuffing top secret documents down his pants and get away with a slap on the wrists..

More spin off topic, but I'll amuse you, what documents were stuffed and what slap on the wrist did he get with his guilty plea? What's ironic and what's the double standard?

The CIA seems to disagree. Granted they're kind of uptight about these things.

That is because Neocons are NOT Conservative in the least. Take it from the father of Neoconservatism, Irving Kristol, who said that a "Neoconservative is a Liberal that has been mugged by reality". They originally called themselves Neoliberals before the Conservative wave hit America. They then conveniently changed the name to Neoconservative. That are actually not really former Liberals either. They are former Communists and Socialists, who hijacked the Republican party and are using it as their parasitic host. Irving Kristol himself supported Leon Trotsky.

I don't think dejection over justice not being fully served is specific to liberals...

Check this out, it is some info that should be useful to you:

Atlantic Free Press - Hard Truths for Hard Times

"Scooter Libby is not on trial for violating the Intelligence Identities Protection Act. He faces a jury because he lied about his role in giving out Valerie's name and obstructed the investigation into the leak. Can you leak the name of an overt employee? No.

The relevant section of the law relevant to the Libby investigation states:

(b) Disclosure of information by persons who learn identity of covert agents as result of having access to classified information

Whoever, as a result of having authorized access to classified information, learns the identify of a covert agent and intentionally discloses any information identifying such covert agent to any individual not authorized to receive classified information, knowing that the information disclosed so identifies such covert agent and that the United States is taking affirmative measures to conceal such covert agent’s intelligence relationship to the United States, shall be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.
So what is a "covert agent"? Here's what the Intelligence Identities Protection Act states:
(4) The term “covert agent” means— (A) a present or retired officer or employee of an intelligence agency or a present or retired member of the Armed Forces assigned to duty with an intelligence agency—
(i) whose identity as such an officer, employee, or member is classified information, and (ii) who is serving outside the United States or has within the last five years served outside the United States; or

There are two types of people who work at CIA. First are the "overt" employees. These are folks who can declare on their resume or any credit application that they are a CIA employee. Their status is not classified and their relationship with the CIA is openly acknowledged. Valerie Plame was never an "overt" employee. At no time during her entire time at the CIA did she identify herself as a CIA employee. Although she appeared in Who's Who as the wife of Ambassador Wilson there is no reference whatsoever to her having a job at the CIA. Zippo!

The remaining category of employee is covert. Covert employees include people who work under "official cover" and people who work under "non-official cover". A former CIA officer, Tom Gilligan, discussed both types of cover in his book CIA Life: 10,000 Days With the Agency. Official cover means the employee can say that he or she works for the United States Government, e.g. State Department, but at no time do you admit publicly that you work for the CIA. You get the added benefit of carrying an official or diplomatic passport. If you get caught overseas engaged in intelligence activity it means you have diplomatic immunity and the equivalent of a get out of jail free card.

Non official cover or NOC also is covert but is more sensitive (and dangerous). A NOC does not work for the U.S. Government. A NOC does not have an official or diplomatic passport. A NOC works for a business or organization with no tie to the U.S. Government. If you are caught overseas while conducting espionage activities as a NOC you are screwed. You do not get a jail out of free card. You remain in jail or may be executed.

Now I will write this in big block letters: VALERIE PLAME WAS STILL UNDER NON OFFICIAL COVER WHEN NOVAK PUBLISHED HER NAME. "

You mean like Wilson and his wife Plume did?

Let's say it like it is, stealing and destroying documents to save his and his administrations ***. Nary a word about that from the dimocrats and others yet we have had to witness more dimocrat wasting of money on a partisian bs propaganda 'gothcha' trial like this.

Where is your outrage over the National Security Advisor Sandy Berger stuffing top secret documents down his pants to protect "Slick Willie." Oh wait, he is a bleeding heart lefty...........my bad.......

My guess would be in a post entitled "Verdict reached in top secret document stuffing trial of Sandy Berger"...

Oh wait there was no trail... because he didn't lie to the FBI about it!

I believe in limited government, you believe in republicans.

I believe in personal responsibility. You believe in republicans.

I believe honesty and integrity are worth defending. You believe republicans are worth defending.

I believe classical liberalism is good. You likely don't know the origin of the term but believe anything with the word liberal in it is bad.
